    Sibelius? Richard Strauss? Both? I wonder why Freitas branco being a contemporeous of Mahler (he dies in 1911) does not show any mahlerian particular sign in his music...Maybe it was still "too soon"? Excellent piece.

      This may sound 'strange' today, but Mahler was hardly a household name until the late 60s, and above all the later "Death in Venice" phenomenon. Not surprising at all a composer like Freitas Branco would know little about Mahler, whose music was rarely performed (until then), and his scores seldom looked at.
