Who Is Swamp Thing? Comic Origin, Powers & TV Show Changes Explained
    Via screenrant.com
A being known as the Swamp Thing first appeared in 1971, in issue #92 of the horror anthology House of Secrets. The short story detailed how a scientist named Alex Olsen was injured in an explosion rigged by his jealous assistant, who dumped Olsen's body in the swamp and proceeded to romance Olsen's wife, Linda.
The one-shot story proved to be an unexpected hit and the public wanted more. Writer Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson were commissioned to develop a monthly comic book series around their Swamp Thing concept.
The first Swamp Thing series ran for 24 issues, though Len Wein only wrote the first 13 of those. It was here that he established the two longest lasting relationships in Swamp Thing's new life. First, Len Wein introduced Swamp Thing's arch enemy, Anton Arcane - a scientist turned sorcerer who sought the secrets of eternal life and tried to claim Swamp Thing's virtually indestructible body as his own.
This status quo held for many years, until a young writer named Alan Moore took over the second 1982 Swamp Thing series with Issue #20. Moore envisioned a radical new mythology based around Swamp Thing, which started with an astonishing twist - that Swamp Thing was not a transformed Alec Holland but a new being that had absorbed Holland's memories from the swamp that birthed him.
Alan Moore's run established a wholly unique cosmology for the DC Comics universe, with later writers developing related concepts such as The Red, which connects animal-themed heroes, which empowers Aquaman's telepathic control over aquatic creatures. Moore also courted controversy by establishing a romance between Swamp Thing and Abby Arcane after Matthew Cable's death.
Swamp Thing's powers increased exponentially during Alan Moore's run after his status as a guardian of nature was revealed. Swamp Thing now had the power to telepathically communicate with other plant life and command it, accelerating its growth at will.
Things changed again during the Brightest Day storyline, just before the New 52 revamp in 2011. Swamp Thing died and Alec Holland was resurrected, though he now had the memories of the creature that had originally thought he was Alec Holland. Scott Snyder started a new Swamp Thing series which saw Alec Holland reborn as a new champion of The Green and having to fight against a revitalized Anton Arcane, who had become a champion of The Black - a primordial force opposed to The Green, that was tied to death and decay. Abby Arcane came into Alec Holland's new life as well, trying to find her missing husband while resisting The Black's efforts to take control of her.

Wes, good pick here. I am fortunate to have a complete collection of Swampy from "House of Secrets #92" to the Nu52 run. Good stuff!

My first Swamp Thing was a reprint in the late 70s... it had such an impact on me that (as far as I know) I have picked up every appearance since.
The Wein / Wrightson era was a classic that highlighted a lot of classic horror elements. In less than a dozen issues, you had a Frankenstein story, a Werewolf story, a Lovecraft-esque story, an Alien story, a Zombie story and more.
You can buy almost every ST appearance from ‘71 to ‘86 in three collected volumes. There is a Bronze Age Swamp Thing Omnibus and 2 Absolute Swamp Thing volumes (hopefully a 3rd in the future). These volumes cover all but about a half dozen guest appearances in other books.

I always thought of Swamp Thing (especially Alec) as a Champion-Hero for his own defenceless People/country(the Green) Defending it from any type of invader.

Dick Giordano doesn't get enough credit for taking chances with books like Swamp Thing in the early to mid 1980's that provided the sea change that altered comics forever.

Dick Giorando doesn't get enough credit in general yeah. Morale of the people he worked with was important to him, and trying to do right by people. He helped make sure Curt Swan still had some work in his later years even after the higher ups wanted him gone because they wanted Superman to be completely overhauled. Harder to find people like him in comics these days than it should be.

Joe's voice reminds me of Phil Hartman.
I've always been interested in Swamp Thing, even when I hadn't read any of the comics at all. I read the Alan Moore stuff just a few years ago and loved all of it except for maybe that last volume. The New 52 stuff was one of the few high points of that debacle, even though I felt it kind of sputtered out after a while.
Hell, I even like the movies well enough.

Swamp Thing (along with 2 other franchises) are the last remaining DC properties I am still enough of a fan of to stay a completist and continue to buy EVERY issue of. My 2 longboxes of Swampy comics wont allow my inner fanboy to permit a hole in my collection lol. Hunting down those Swamp Thing Giants at Walmarts and the comic shop was a chore and definitely the low point for the character. Down there with Doug Wheeler's run and the Tefe series. I'm hoping Ram V can do something interesting with his upcoming run without damaging the mythos. OVERALL I agree that Swampy is one of the few DC characters that has survived all of DCs events and reboots more or less intact and undamaged.
