Canada should drop the tariff on Chinese EVs as a retaliation against the US if they do, in fact, impose tariffs on Canadian goods. Chinese EVs are very good and in many ways far ahead of American OEMs. Give Canadians free market choice!

Good news is, Hyundai's EV production in Georgia has not yet reached Canada. We are getting 2025 MY cars with CCS ports from Korea until at least late Spring. Hyundai can be smart and just keep importing from Korea into Canada to work around these tariffs for the affected IONIQ 5, Kia EV9 production. We have enough Teslas on the road in Canada anyway, these stupid price increases will just redirect buyers in looking at other EVs, a movement that was already starting to happen.
Not sure if this is purely a tariffs/duty kind of thing. If 24% increase, and a Y is more expensive than a 3, then it does not add up that the 3 price will go up 9K and the Y will go up 4K. Mathematically does not add up. Maybe it is time for Canada to end the 100% tariffs on cars from China.
I think they are putting more increase in the cars that sell less and less on cars that is sells more and are more price sensitive compared to the competition.
who the hell is taking these decisions about the damn tarrifs has 'ZERO FKIN IDEA" about what benefits the citizens and are purely focused on lining their own pockets ..
Great story and great reporting. It will be interesting to see changes unfold and digest how it impacts manufacturer behavior and customer behavior. Thanks for keeping the podcast going Isaiah!
Given GM Equinox is $45K and Ioniq 5 is also cheaper, people have more choices now. If Canada would let cheap Chinese EV in, haha like that would happen, EV sales would go through the roof.
Clarification. The price increase $1K may affect rebate but the program exhausted the funding and has been suspended. So Federal $5K not available and in Québec where I am the Provincial program suspended and $7K is gone. Tesla shooting themselves in foot as sales will drop for sure.
I wanted to trade my 21 Model 3 LR AWD in mid-summer this year as I've put alot of kilometers on it and like to keep a new car every 4-5yrs. I didn't get the iZEV rebates back in 2021 because the Long Range didn't qualify. A year later, it qualified. Now, no rebates and the price is also going up. That really puts a damper on plans to trade-in. Maybe I'll keep it longer until things change.
Great production value young man. Tesla is moving old inventory product. This means big discounts on inventory product, and temporary? price hikes on new models. Everyone would ignore brand-new inventory cars if Musk/Tesla management didn't do this.
The situation is worse and the explanation is probably simpler. Canadian Teslas had already gone up in price November 2024 because we lost access to the Shanghai-built Teslas. In 2025, the Canadian dollar is down versus US currency. It now takes more Canadian dollars to buy US manufactured cars.
Nope, this is on top of the end of EV rebates and $1K increase they did recently. So for a Model Y, you are looking a $10K increase. Let's see Musk's face when people switch to other brands. Too bad that Canada blocked Chinese EVs.
It's to spur demands for the old Model Y inventory before they release the new one. They will do a temporary price increase and decrease it again after a month or so. They have done it before
It's CAD most likely It has fallen recently and with these price increases it now barely at par with USD prices. 48k USD is equal to 70k CAD which would be the new prices of LR AWD Model Y in Canada. Check it out. Canada also imposed tariffs on Chinese imported EVs and hence Tesla shifted to cars imported from US in middle of 2024 and now USD has strengthened and here we are. I think your theory about tariffs is not accurate. EV rebates (iZev) ran out of money and that's why they are stopped in Canada by federal government of Canada.
Thanks but a +25% tariff on a part would be say example a $1000.00 part would be $1,333.34. I know as I have been in the import export business and sales for 40 years, just saying.
Also, Tesla has been losing market share in Canada. Model 3 and Y, in the 2nd half of 2024, were no longer the top selling EVs in Canada. In Canada, GM is beating Tesla. Why would Elon keep low profit margins for low volume? With Tesla sales dwindling and the Canadian dollar low, they might as well preserve profit on each car.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 & 6 and Kia EV6 prices are heing dropped by $10K with lease or financing or $5K if by cash outright! Check out your canadian dealerships to see if you can get a better deal!
I wouldn't buy a Tesla. Why would any Canadian support Elon Musk? I'm sure as hell not. We sold our Tesla, dropped X, dropped Amazon, dropped Meta. It's our personal choice to not support a country that consistently treats Canada like a punching bag. 🇨🇦
My Shanghai built Highland AWD bought in May 2024 will cost taxes in $14040 CDN (9794USD) more Feb. 1. This new increase is about CDN to USD and not tariffs. Our dollar has been doing poorly through mismanagement of our economy. It made no sense for Canada to follow the US lead on tariffing Chinese made EVs. Our only domestic EVs are the Stellantis Charger and the Bright Drop cargo van.
Given Canada produces 0 EVs (I think) despite dumping billions into subsidies, when will Canadians wake up and drop tariffs on Chinese EVs? Or better yet, let them build in Canada?
So Musk is officially a politician. I guess the little voice in his head that said save the human race has gone silent. Thinking about trading my model 3 in for Rivian.
This is not correct.. Telsa no longer import Chinese origin Tesla's into Canada to avoid the Chinese tariffs Canada has placed on Chinese manufactured EV's. Tesla vehicle imports into Canada are of USA origin.
I can't see this lasting very long. Inventory will pile up. As a Canadian Tesla owner I'm already considered switching brands. Tesla's have become pretty stale IMO. That said, I can't see Canada putting tarrifs on vehicles, but who knows. It's likely due to the weak CAD.
For tariffs in general, "we pay the tariffs" is too simplistic. High tariffs, say 25% and higher, choke off trade and no one pays the tariffs. And tariffs below 10% will not necessarily be paid by the consumer if the manufacturer wants to remain price competitive and therefore "eats" the tariff themselves. .... but Trump is negotiating now. I think Canada will eventually come down off the ledge and talk peace about what Trumps wants. After all the little snow board instructor is essentially gone. ... And right now, the Canadian dollar is toast. That will cause your prices to rise too. Bad policies by the snow board instructor.
The CBT would also get a price hike if this were about tariffs. And Elon supposedly acting on some kind of insider information would be insanely scandalous and libelous, for Elon, Tesla and potentially for Trump as well. You’re going nuts with your conjecture again, Isaiah.
I have a Model Y in Canada I didn't qualify for the rebate, I am not sure if any of the Teslas ever qualified. Also the exchange rate is bad, as stated by others. You should do a little more research before posting these videos.

Seeing less Tesla on the road is a good thing ! And paying 10 grand more for a car that depreciates 50% after 3 years is koo koo
Well, the silver lining is that the depreciation would ease a little.
yes i could see the price of all models increase by $7,500 because the tax credit will be gone
