      16:39 the problem is everyone is gonna go and look at these "hacks" and then everyone will be trying to use these same hacks. But some songs will come out better than others

    Using the Fibonacci sequence is kinda silly. If there is a climatic part of your song, such as a solo or breakdown, consider putting it around 2/3rds into the song's playback (seconds or beats wouldn't matter). Essentially 2 parts before it to build up tension, 1 afterwards for closure.

      @cobrasys 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well, what the guy said there was basically what you said, only he tried to make it fancy. The value of φ (phi, or "the golden ratio", which _is_ related to the Fibonacci sequence, but is also its own thing) is ~1.618; he's telling people to multiply the length of the song by 0.618 to find the "phi moment", which will give you 61.8% of the length of the song... which is very close to 2/3rds (which is ~0.667 or 66.7%).

    If I had a dime for every time a prog kid told me to "use the Fibonacci sequence" (a writing joke Tool themselves thought was weak) I'd have enough money to buy a Gibson. I wouldn't, but I'd be able to.

    So it’s interesting as someone who has been writing since I was 12, 40 now, to see all these thoughts on how to write. Lyrics for me usually come last. I usually take a mostly finished song and just go for a walk. Listen to it. Feel it. Until my brain wanders enough to grab onto a first line. I don’t usually go into a song with intentions of writing about something in specific. It takes time. I usually am able a few months later to realize what I had been saying

    The songwriting corner of Tiktok seems like a rich community. More videos like that, please, Trey!
    Also, I have two questions about a specific band and would be great to know your insights if you feel like answering:
    - Do you enjoy Bad Omens (especially their latest album)?
    - If you dig them, would a song be worth of a video analysis someday? I love how they borrowed influences from The Weeknd and trip hop to fuse it with metalcore sprinkles (and i really think that Noah is a clever lyricist).

    Paranoid by Black Sabbath has almost all the verse vocal melody on the up beats, but more importantly there’s little flips in and out of the downbeat in special places where the syllables require it, very similar to the example Trey made. Great stuff man!

    Dude! I TOTALLY want to hear a song that at EXACTLY 61.8% mark of the song, a new section busts in. Like, I can just imagine on the up beat of the third note in a measure, you have to immediately switch to the "C" section. 😂 Using such exacting techniques just KILLS the joy of a song, imo. It's the same with movies. I had such a hard time finishing the Marvel Avenger movies because they were SO formulaic with their action sequences. Sure, at first those sequences were awesome (in the true sense of the word), then later, even within the same movie, I was like, "OK...time for a new lyric!" And don't get me started on overly repetative lyrics/choruses...UHG!

  • @orlock20

    Modal is the adjective and mode is the noun. The seven modes are taught in basic music theory.

    • @treyxaviermusic
      @treyxaviermusic  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That didn't make any sense in the context though

    • @orlock20
      @orlock20 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@treyxaviermusic It's probably cut from a longer video. It would make sense when talking about Gregorian chant harmonies. Gregorian music is in modes and not modern scales.
      He is saying he likes harmonies are on the third of the chord being played by an instrument. If the instrument is playing a C and two people are singing, then one is singing in E an octave higher than the instrument and the other is singing in E an octave below the instrument.

    • @treyxaviermusic
      @treyxaviermusic  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That makes even less sense, the thing he’s describing is a pedal tone, he clearly just used the wrong word. Nothing he describes is specific to any of the modes

  • @ericolson326

    Unless I'm missing something important, that Fibonacci suggestion seems like full-bore nonsense. I could get behind a rule of thumb about having a climax or change every x# bars or seconds, but making it relative to the overall length of the song is ridiculous. So in the latest incredible 10 minute prog epic, we have to wait 6 fucking minutes to get to the interesting part? Listeners have no clue how much longer a song is going to be, just how long it's been already. We all have a sense of when we're getting to the "okay, I got the idea" point and start reaching for the skip button -- that's where the change needs to go.
