- Howdy Folks, This video will demonstrate How To Spray Paint Multicamesque Camouflage Patterns. Some of you may not have noticed, but I like the Multicam camouflage pattern, just a little bit... OKAY! I Admit It! I Have A Problem! I'm A Multicamoholic! Shortly after Crye Precision introduced the Multicam pattern (20 years ago) and I began to purchase Multicam patterned products, I started experimenting with duplicating this unique pattern. After multiple attempts, I believe I have achieved the ability to adequately reproduce a "Multicamesque" version with spray paint.
I will take the viewer step by step through the entire process of how I spray paint a "Multicamesque" camouflage pattern. I paint a Nalgene Water Bottle to demonstrate the process. However, this technique can be applied to any item you wish to camouflage.
The Paint I Used: If memory serves me correctly, the brand and colors are as follows... Krylon Cover Maxx Brown Boots/ Satin, Krylon Fusion Matt Spanish moss, Rustoleum Camouflage (colors are not named on the cans) Light Green, Dark Green, Dark Brown, And Buff/Tan (not the lightest, the lightest is too light).
If Multicam is not your "cup of tea", No Worries! The technique and process I demonstrate can be used to paint any pattern or color scheme you desire.

Brilliant work Boondockery! Greetings from an old South African bush war veteran. Spray paint was used extensively to camouflage R1 7.62 FN rifles and other weapons and equipment, both in Rhodesian and the SADF units. In those days camo tape and the special cans of spray paint were not available in the region. Multicam did not exist then either. Later in the war the R4 rifle was brought out in a brown colour. Spray paint was extensively used by the special forces units..
These elements went to a great deal of effort to camouflage every item of team and personal equipment, as part of their philosophy of painstaking, detailed preparation. There is no quick fix to this effort, as some on this blog have alluded to. You have that detailed, analytical and solution oriented approach that made South African and Rhodesian special forces world leaders in their field at that time period in history.
Rob, You Had To Have Seen Some Serious SHITE! I am so very grateful for your comment! You have justified my efforts and successes in this trial and error process! I personally feel that the journey is as important as the destination. I feel when I reach whatever destination I reach, my kit will be in order. Thank again so very much! You Have Made My Evening!!! God Bless You My Friend!
I'd like to give you my best regards, and sincere appreciation for your service to your country.
Agree. Australian Army 1980s. We used to wrap our SLR in hessian( your R1 just made here in inch pattern ) khaki green isdue clothing kit webbing. We did what we wanted thought worked best. Hessian tie on scrim net spray paint grey tan browns. Tbh your bush is basically the same colours as here your SADF brown uniforms would have worked better here to. We went Auscam. Which was ok once it faded. New multicam in auscamish colours also I believe works better here faded. What is best is coyote and spray it up net it up Hessian in my opinion

I tried this and my water bottle disappeared in the bush. Forget Harry Potters cloak of invisibility. I'll bet my water bottle smiles to itself every time I walk past it. Nice job...
😆😅😄😆😅😄😆😅😄👍😆😅😄👍😆😅😄👍 Thank You! I Needed This Today!!!!
Did you try "Accio water bottle"?
Works like a charm
Very well done! Effective application. A couple of notes from a professional painter, the 91% alcohol also removed mold release as well as dust. Secondly, the frog tape is formulated to repell water based paint. It will work on solvent based paint but so will the cheaper blue tape. In either case avoid the tape with ripples as any paint will bleed under the edges. Great plan on the order of color application.
Thank You Very Much Michael! I deeply appreciate the tips!
I worked as a painter's apprentice for about a year, we went through a few rolls of Frog Tape every single day! Thank you for reminding me about it.
What do you mean about tape with ripples? That has been exactly my problem, the paint bleeding under the tape 😢
Is the blue tape not good for this?
@theurbanartist775 put the tape down after spraying with your color you used first, then respray over the tape with the same color as is under the tape, then spray your new color over the top. The double shot of the same color(1 shot under and one over) prevents the new color from leaking under the tape. It acts a a sealant or super think laying of caulking. It's how you get crisp, sharp lines IF that's what you're looking for. But with camo, crisp lines can make it so you're more easily seen. But, if you just want a crisp clear pattern then use yet technique
I've watched a bunch of rattle can camo videos. This is perhaps the best presentation I have seen.
Thank You VERY Much! I deeply appreciate that! I will be doing the same process on my RECCE Rifle build. I may or may not share it seeing how TH-cams agenda sways.
@@boonedockery7220 I'd love to see that, this was a great breakdown and the colors are probably the closest I've seen.
@@ayegee6093 Thank You! The video might be on Rumble but I'll put the word out via TH-cam community posts!
@@boonedockery7220 Gonna have to check it out !
Agreed, the cost effectiveness of tape vs stencils, awesome stuff. Great technique...only question is did u finish it with a clear matt/ coat or let it ride as a finish
Using the flat and satin was really smart. It does add a huge amount of depth. Definitely tricks the human eye.
Thank You! Took a while to figure that one out!
Thanks for the great tip!
I like this idea of satin and ultra flat, but am curious whether you’ve shined a light on them after dark. As in tossing it somewhere outside and seeing whether a white light will reflect more dramatically off the satin finish and stand out or just be a normal reflection of the white light as the surrounding waxy vegetation? In other words, does it react the same to concentrated white light at night as it does to sunlight in the day? Thanks.
@@chadlowery1098 The satin should break up light waves. So the same effect you get in the sun would be similar at night. The moon is just the reflection of the suns rays. A mix of blacks and dark greys flat and satin might be better at night.
This is by far the best homemade spray paint camp job I’ve ever seen. I feel inspired
Thank You!
This is so sweet. My coworker has a scar with a trashy Multicam finish on layaway and he knocks on my spray painted poverty ponies. Im so excited to show him up in front of everyone with this epic Multicam idea. Thank you! (Btw were pals. Mostly no negativity)
Hahaha.... I hope it turns out great!
if you go to an art supply store, they have a low adhesion "Frisket" which is thin film that clings but is very easy to peel off. it's made for airbrushing.
Thank You! I completely forgot about FRISKET!!!! I used it a lot in the early 80s when I was in college! I don't have a decent art supply store within 50 miles of where I live so I'll order online! Thank You Again!
I had never heard of this until you said it. I wish I had known about this sooner.
Something I use on my rifles instead of masking tape is liquid dish soap. Obviously, you still want to mask off optic lenses, adjustment values and other sensitive areas... but I've found starting with a tan base coat, allowing it to dry, and then hitting the rifle with random stripes of dish liquid, and alternating brown and olive drab randomly gives me a decent pattern that blends in fairly well in all seasons. :]
The dish soap basically acts as masking tape. Once the paint dries, you can spray off the weapon with water and you're left with tan stripes underneath olive drab and brown splotches.
One idea if you don’t want to freehand the shapes is to consider finding a camo print online. Print and lay it on top of your tape layers. From there cut out the shapes.
Good Idea! I've used stencils I've cut in the past, but they really only work well on flat objects.
I laser cut stencils out of mylar. These are easy to clean and reuse.
Now there's a guy who knows how to paint a rifle! You're the only person I've seen to make his own stencils from frog tape, like I do. Works much better than sheet-rubber stencils... especially on rifles!
Thank You! I'm Very Glad You Appreciate What I Do!
I did a helmet like this years ago I hadn’t seen anyone make their own stencils before with tape when I did it. My helmet was kind of a pain because of the sandy bumpy finish that’s on most kevlar helmets so it was tough getting the tape to stick but I did it
Mask with wood glue, it flakes off with minor pressure and flex.
Krylon's Fusion paints are a terrific base and will let most everything grab on without roughing.
This is the best painting instructional video I’ve seen.
Thank you very much!!!! Check out my community page and you can see pics of an AR15 I used the same process on.
Loved that scooby doo reference
YAY!!!! I'm glad someone got it!!! Thank You!
Real nice! My wife loves Home Goods. I kept seeing the same light blue Nalgene bottle and after two or three price drops, finally had to pick it up. Now I have the perfect idea of what to do with it to make it a whole lot less of a sore thumb in the woods.
Awesome! I hope you enjoy the process and it turns out better than mine! Check out my community page and you can see pics of an AR15 I used the same process on.
If you wanna blend.. Use black paint with a sponge. And just do the edges of where colors meet.. Cut the sponges in different shapes if you wanna, theres plenty of tutorials out there. Sometimes I use colors that are way off in "partnership" . I use whatever I have left in my cans before I buy more paint. And I implement multiple techniques, to always get some weird strange patterns. Good vid! Love it!!!!!
Great Tip! Thank You!
As someone who paints daily I recommend degreasing the surface before sanding, this way you don't rub grease into the material. After sanding remove dust and degrease again this ensures the best possible condition for the paint to adhere to the surface.
How would I degrease a plastic shell for a Gameboy Color?
John that really turned out awesome. I like multicam but I been leaning more toward the multicam tropic, you gave me great ideas for my water bottles
Thank you Mark! Multicam Tropic is FANTASTIC for SE Ohio woods in the summer. I find the types of trees, foliage, undergrowth change dramatically as I move through the woods. Also the seasonal changes also change dramatically. So, that's why I run with Multicam (OCP/Scorpion/MTP). Mixing and matching patterns work pretty well. I have experimented with wearing Multicam equipment with ATCAS FG. That works out very well in the greener months and forests. I'm certain the same would be true with mixing Tropical MC With Standard MC.
Good Luck with your water bottles! You can use the same technique and process I used to produce the Tropical MC, just replace the browns with a wide variety of greens.
Thanks Again!
Have a great day!
Very nice. I tried the soap method for masking yesterday and got even better results. For my taste of course. Due to the spill of the soap you get some trippy patterns. I just jumped in the process and was really impressed by my work to be honest. The randomness of the soap spill after you apply it adds an element thats hard to replicate if you are not really good at this i think:) tnx for the video
I've always tried to figure out how to do something like this in my head, but you got it down. It's a lot of work, but that payoff is worth it!
Thank You Very Much! "IF" only ANY of the Spray Paint Companies would manufacture the Multicam Color Pallet, That Would Be Nice!
I have a cnc laser and have recently cut out a Vietnam tiger stripe camo pattern to paint one of my rifles out of stencil vinyl. I’m just too scared to actually do it 😂 I know I need to just go for it, it’s just so hard for me to visualize the order of colors and stuff to get the look I want, this video really helped.
Word to the wise: cutting vinyl with a laser creates chlorine gas which will turn into hydrochloric acid if mixed with water. VENT YOUR AREA WELL. Or, like a smart person, borrow someone’s Cricut and avoid tear-gassing yourself 😂. I’m impatient and own a chemical respirator so I just went ahead and did it. My laser is directly next to a window with a fan in it facing out, and I had a fan on my side pushing the smoke towards that fan. It was fine. There IS “laser safe” or PVC-free stencil vinyl which is actually just polyurethane and contains no PVC (the bad stuff that makes CS gas when burnt), but again, I’m impatient, and an idiot.
I have a RECCE rifle that I'm going to paint but finding the duration of time I need to do the project with consecutive days is daunting. It will be multicamesque as well. I will be using laser cut vinyl stencils made by Freedom Stencils.
One of the best how to camo videos Ive seen well done
Thank You!
My tio for a very even and smooth application of a rattle spray can is something I learned many years ago. Heat up a pot of water and let the can warm up. Obviously be cautious about how hot the pot is, but if you live in a cold environment and the spray is coming out very "dotty" that works really really well.
Your MC came out great, I'll try to replicate it on a piece of gear. Hopefully convert an ACU pattern into MC. THANKS FOR THE VIDEO
I love your videos from Japan. This attempt has not been done at all in Japan, so I would like to try it immediately.
Thank You! Good Luck On Your Multicam Painting Attempt! I have a couple more Multicam painting projects I will be doing soon. I can't wait to get started! Thanks for commenting and have a great day!
Wow! Incredible! Painting good camo is quite a challenge.
Good application of paint and process and even more rare a well done video production, I have been painting different camouflage schemes for several years , mainly on my rifles. Doing a professional job and masking is very time consuming . I have not done multicam-esque in years and was reviewing videos , your video is the best on TH-cam " in my opinion " . Now I am off to the workshop to disassemble and paint two identical rifles for two very good friends . Those fellows are going to owe me big time. Thank you for taking the time and for all the work involved.
Thank you !
By far the best camo painting video I've seen.
Thank You VERY MUCH Daniel!
The bottle looks great. If you do this as a hobby that's great. to speed it up considerably, all you need to do is put the light grey base then just spray random splotches of the different colors on. For a small bottle this would be sufficient.
Awesome Michael! Thanks for the tip! Thank you very much!
That method also works very well when doing multiple bottles/magazines. Bonus, it's 90% less work.
Line 'em all up and make a big criss-cross pattern. Turn/roll 'em when dry and repeat. When separated, the small parts break up any recognizable pattern.
Found this while looking for vehicle paint jobs, planning on doing a Suburban in this later on. A quick fix to the graduations you left unpainted, same one you already used, tape. I've done a couple rifles but not a water bottle. Going to start small before hitting a truck. Thanks for posting.
Awesome job, I'm gonna give this a try on my holster to match the multicam battle belt I'm running. My favorite time of year for paint job's is fall, nice warm sunny day without the humidity. I'm a Buckeye too and spraying outdoors on a high humidity day sucks.
Thank you! I hope your happy with your holster when you finish it! Ohio Summers are my LEAST favorite!
I really wasn't diggin the process, but wow, I watched until the end and can see the purpose. One of the best camo jobs I've seen, well done! Would love to see you do a rifle!
Thank You! I'll have to post my rifle paintjob on Rumble. TH-cam doesn't like anything gun related.
When I do mine I use a “folding bone” to help properly adhere the tape and my edges don’t peel. Also if you’ve time in your efforts letting each coating sit for fully 72 hours this will allow the tape to adhere better. Part of the reason you may get tape peeling is that the paint is still off gassing and literally pushing the tape off the surface. If you tape off your graduation scale before sanding this will allow you to sand right up to it with fear of over sanding.
This is FANTASTIC advice! Thank You! I learn far more from the comments than I may "teach" on my videos. Thanks again!
@@boonedockery7220 side note I’ve developed a means of properly painting pelican cases that avoids sand/soda blasting (which is inherently the best). Don’t know how much/what else you paint but I’m delighted to share, but don’t want to TLDR.
wow, tons of detailed information. pro tips here. thanks for detailing all the major steps needed. pretty labor intensive. looks fun to do. this process can be duplicated for anything. like even tarps.
Turned out sooo well! Removing the masking tape is always the best part 💪😅
Thank You! I Agree Completely! It's like unwrapping a Christmas Present!😊😉👍
Hallo John! Awesome job! Never seen a spraypaint DIY project turning out that well (compared to my past ones). The way you did it makes a good result, often there is much more to it then most people may think. I know camouflage is a widely spread subject, there`s alot to pay attention to.
@@boonedockery7220 that's cool, looking forward to it! 👍
The old bottle looks pretty dang good too. Maybe closer to the UK version of multicam (whatever it's called).
Thanks Will! The British pattern is called MTP (Multi Terrain Pattern).
Oh man. That index of paint is $40 -Great video but I’d just as soon turn a few wraps of camouflage 2 inch gaffers tape and call it a day. Not to mention you can carry an alternate camo pattern in your go pack. For example: you move from woodland to sagebrush over dirt. Recovering the Nalgene is less than 3 minutes of re-wrapping the bottle. Nonetheless I appreciate your videos. This one is crafty but it’s a heckuva process.
Thank You. I'm OCP and this process for me is both enjoyable and therapeutic. Not to mention, I personally think the results are pretty good. It's all a matter of what you want out of a project. Sometimes the journey is more important than the destination.
Great work
I used your method to Multicam-esque my tv remote and the car keys. Thanks for nuthin’, man!
Where's my keys? Where's my phone?
Hey, John! Man, that looks FAN-TASTIC! You made it look so easy, too! I most definitely going to have to try that out in the future. BTW, I always thought those rattle can handles were sort of gimmicky, made for people who are afraid to get their hands dirty, haha! I guess I'll give those a shot, too. Thanks, Brother!
Thanks Brother! Yeah, those spray triggers really help with hand fatigue! I have "Rattle Can Multicamed" A Lot of large projects (in size and numerically) and that triggered grip saved me a lot of time and discomfort. Like I said in the video, you can use these techniques and processes to make any pattern you want. If you don't want to cut your own pattern mask, there are several companies that make stencils. I've cut my own when I did large projects but I don't think the results are as good as applying masks. There is a company called Freedom Stencils and they produce a HUGE range of pre-cut vinyl stencils ( I call them masks). If you want a project to turn out perfect, I'd recommend them. www.freedomstencils.com/collections/camouflage-stencils
Very interesting that you mentioned MTP!!! 🇬🇧
I LOVE MTP! The true selling point is that they incorporated shapes from the DMP pattern in it! I love that kind of stuff!
Increíble video! I’m only a third of the way through and I am astounded by the amount of detail and explanation you have provided. Subscribed!
Thank You Very Much! Check out my community page and you can see pics of an AR15 I used the same process on.
This rocks! Best rattle can video ive seen vs the gun specific searches i’ve watched (a lot). Great work man!
That turned out great. Thank you for sharing
You're VERY WELCOME!!
I'm doing almost this exact same thing with model tanks right now. Well done, sir.
Very Cool! Oh, And Thank You! I LOVE building models! Haven't done it in a lone time. Military models was one of the ranges I built. 1/35th scale was my preference a long time ago, but a while back I got into a tabletop game called Flames Of War which is 15mm or 1/100th scale. I have many very fond memories of model building. Perhaps I'll get back into it after I retire. Thanks for sharing this! You really brightened my day!
@@boonedockery7220 yes, sir! 1/35 scale for the win! My youngest daughter discovered an anime show called "Girls und Panzer" and we decided we would tackle modeling the vehicles from the anime, so I get to pass on my love of model-building to another generation. Which, of course, means I have to dust off a very rust skill-set now!
Bloody Excellent 👍 a nice gentle presentation on camo painting.
Learnt loads about layering. Thanks
Thank You Very Much! The layering of the paint (allowing drying time between coats) negates the necessity of clear coating on these smaller items. Ogres, onions, parfaits, camouflage water bottles.... it's the layers that are important...😊😉👍
I really liked your explanation of your color palette. Super informative video from start to finish. Thanks!

best tutorial on camo-painting yet!!
Thank you very much! I really wanted to post a video on multicamming my RECCE rifle. Apparently, it's evil in the eyes of TH-cam. I think that even painting a water bottle demonstrates the process. HOPEFULLY, with the clarity that anyone can AND will do it themselves.
I don't love the result but I don't hate it either. I think its exactly as you said. Great video!
Thank you and excellent! It is what it is and it works pretty good. Mission accomplished.
And I woulda got away with it too if it wasn't for you meddling multicams!!
I also love that the newest and greatest Crye Precision Multicam is basically just a 5-color update of ERDL from the 1950s.

Isn't there a can with 3 to 4 chambers that has a spray nozzle with 3 to 4 ports that spray out 3 to 4 different colors of paint at the same time. Instant muti cam. Sounds good to me.
Bazinga!
If you want to try and balance the green and brown out a little more try spraying a green with a brown instead of doing the 2 different browns at the same time and then the 2 different greens at the same time. Might come out a little more how you want it. Still, good job mate, looks really good

Bulldog Promoter. its like gluing your paint to plastic. Hands down, best way to paint plastic.
I'll look into it! Thanks for the tip!
Great pattern and very close to multicam. You may want to consider a matt clear coat plastic top coat to protect your finish. It would be a great shame to spoil that great job.
Thank You! I have Matte and Flat Clear Coats. The first water I painted 10+ years ago was not clear coated and has held up very well. My next MC project will be a full-on RECCE Mini-Rifle paintjob. I will most definitely be clear coating that! I have no plans on posting a video on TH-cam about that for obvious reasons, however I may post a few pics on the community section of the channel. Thanks again and have a great evening!
Tutorial part of the video starts at 16:20
I will be Multicaming other projects in the very near future. However given the particular projects and TH-cams community guidelines, I will be posting the videos on Rumble. I'm in the process of researching how to create a Rumble channel. Once I have one created, I'll post the info on my community page of my TH-cam channel.
One of my favorite patterns involves only two colors. Use an OD Green base, and then use natural material for a mask. Cedar “leaves” and pine boughs make wicked cool patterns. This multi cam is pretty badass. Also, did you sand the lid as well? The softer plastic seems like it’d be mor prone to peeling.
Sounds Excellent! I did sand the lid and attachment loop.
Dr F do you have any links to what you’re talking about?
Great instructional video! I appreciate your effort to document the process. Regards.
Thank You Very Much! I'm very happy you enjoyed it!
Friend, A long time ago, studies proved that Camouflage patterns only camouflage when one is close enough to actually SEE the individual parts of the pattern. Once you are more than a few steps away, the camouflage blends into single monotone to the eye. If you want your camoflage to work outside of spitting distance, you need considerable LARGER PATTERNS than any contemporary Camouflage maker supplies.
I dissagree
Yes distance impacts it but within 100 yards a decent sized multi cam you can still somewhat distinguish it
Ooh a bit of tan ooh a bit of green must be a bush with dying grass around it
But you don’t want the pattern to be distinguishable if your looking for Somone and you see
A bush a tree and a camo patterned shirt shaped object
You probably will find them
Camouflage clothing is only the blank canvas to true Camouflage techniques.
@@boonedockery7220 In the original article, they showed three IPSC "Option/Item" targets that had been painted in three broad brushstrokes and they were all but impossible to see in the pictures. I remember when walking years ago-there was one of the odd-shaped Street "Racing Bikes" with an irregular Orange and White Color scheme. I was startled beyond words when the owner of the motorcycle stood up. He was wearing one of those Leather Windbreakers with the same irregular colors as his bike and he was sitting on the parked bike, bent over and fiddling with something. He was absolutely indistinguishable from his bike in the dark. That taught me something about camouflage.
Where's my water?!
This is AWESOME!!!! If it's not too much to ask... could you put a list of the paints in the video. Some I could see but the Rustoleum cans only put the colors on the back of the can on the sticker.
First of all I must sincerely apologize for the delay in my response! Life has been very chaotic as of late. If memory serves me correctly, the brand and colors are as follows... Krylon Cover Maxx Brown Boots/ Satin, Krylon Fusion Matt Spanish moss, Rustoleum Camouflage (colors are not named on the cans) Light Green, Dark Green, Dark Brown, And Buff/Tan (not the lightest, the lightest is too light) again, I'm very sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

There were a lot of fails before I got to this point. Thank You Very Much!
Nice multi-cam paint job. I am curious why you didn't use a flat clear coat over the final result protecting it from fading and chipping? Cheers!
If you noticed, the original water bottle I painted still looked pretty good as far as wear goes. There are several layers of paint there in cast it receives some wear, the colors underneath are exposed. I like having a mix of flat, matte and satin on a lot of what I paint as the contrast in value, intensity and reflection creates it's own kind of camouflage multiplier. I do clear coat bigger, more important projects like rifles and stocks. Thanks for this comment and Cheers!

Even the Spanish moss! I did not get that other krylon one though.
Very Cool! I hope your project exceeds your expectations!
That turned out really well.
I like to think so. Thank You!
This vid makes me think you painted vehicles for the military. It's that good.
I actually did in the early 80s when I was in the Army.
That's awesome!
That’s a perfect camouflage, thanks for the tips 🎨
Thank you very much! Anytime!
Wow,that was really nice and awesome job. I love it...😍
Thank You Very Much! I wish some one would produce a pallet of true Multicam paint colors!
Love the method. I'm going to try it on a pair of slide for a friend's birthday.
Awesome! I hope they turn out well!
Go to an art store for your paint not a hardware store.... it's the differance between having 30 colors to choose from or 300...
Pretty good. Turned out sweet. Now let’s see this on fabric.
That turned out pretty decent looking!
Thank You! With more time and better paint selections, you can get very close to the actual Crye Pattern.
I think it looks brilliant. Well done.
Thank You Very Much!
Perfect explanation and tutorial. Thank you.
Looks great! Another really good video
thanks!
If doing cammie jammies, doing seasonal is a good idea because that basic wood land...can be seen a mile away with a back drop of brown and light tan dead brush. Snow also. Deer may not see bright orange but you are a living target wearing that crap may as well jump up and say "I'm over here...."
