    Do you think the Leica Q3 is a significant upgrade from the Q2 from a practical perspective?

  • @carlgoetzinger6876

    As a walking around/street photo/lifestyle camera I think the q2 and 3 are awesome. Leica quality also can’t be ignored. It’s not a reasonable purchase for a beginner like me but someone not wanting to lug around their big full frame camera it makes sense. If you own a q2, don’t worry about the q3, if you don’t own either one go for a q3. You said it perfectly in the video. Thanks Daniel!

      They are - I just cant seem to see the real practical difference apart from the screen. And for 6000USD... Better with a 2nd hand Q2. Its basically the Rolex of cameras, and you do pay a premium for the red Leica logo. Nothing wrong with that. its just pricey. Thansk for watching, always good to see you Carl!

    I've had my Q2 for over a year and I have nothing but praise for this camera. I'm astonished by the superb image quality. The build of the Q2 is amazing and the camera inspires me to pick it up and shoot every day. It's a delight. If I was going to upgrade to another Leica it would be the M11 and not the Q3. The sensor upgrade and tilt screen isn't enough for me to justify the purchase of a Q3. However, I agree if it's your first time buying a Leica and the choice is between the Q2 or Q3 then go with the Q3. For me, right now, I'm sticking with the Q2.

      Reached the same conclusion Simon - its a luxury to own a Leica either way. I hope to borrow a Q3 just for fun, but I seriously doubt it will give me a wow effect because of some changed button design, a few more megapixels etc. However it made sense for Leica with an upgrade which is understandable with the Q2 being a grandfather of a camera given the speed of tech these days. Have fun with the Q2, its one of the best cameras ive ever tested for street!

    Only this morning cancelled my Q3 pre order (which had arrived) and gone with a good conditioned used Q2 instead for £2000k less. This is my upgrade from my original Q which I’ve been shooting with for the past couple of years (also purchased used). After the initial excitement when the Q3 was launched, watching countless TH-cam videos and the usual bout of GAS, when I took the less emotional view in terms of what I wanted/missing from the Q then for me it was more mp for the occasional time 24mp wasn’t enough and weather sealing and better battery life. Q2 Firmware 5.0 was also taken into consideration as some of those upgrades make the Q2 and even better proposition. Don’t get me wrong the Q3 is the dream camera but a lot of those upgrades are just incremental improvements on an already excellent camera.

    For the price difference new ($200) it makes sense to go with the Q3... assuming you can find one. The price used of a Q2 has gone up, but at $4K to $4.5K it's still a great deal. The other camera I've been on the hunt for is the Fuji X-Pro3 with a 23 f/2 lens. But that kit is now $2300 used, also... if you can find one. For an extra $2K I can get a full-frame vs APSC sensor with double the megapixels, weather-sealing, IBIS, a Leica Summilux 28mm f/1.7 lens, and oh right... a Leica body. In those terms (other than not being an interchangeable system) it might be, relatively speaking, a bargain.

    I have a Sony RX1rii and it is a fine walk-around camera -- great lens and excellent resolution. But I bought a Q2M to feed my B&W obsession and have to say that it is so fine it immediately got me thinking about going Q series for color, too. Pondered the Q2 used market, but held off pending the Q3 announcement. I considered the Q3 upgrades in EVF, tilt screen (for the kind of shooting I sometimes do), and AF enough to put myself on a preorder list. I also think the resolution options and the new JPG styles contribute to making the Q3 a fairly substantial leap forward from the Q2, so I'm staying on that preorder list. No question these are very pricey cameras and I am fortunate to be able to make the choice. I think a used Q2 or even a Q-P might make good sense in the value-for-the-dollar equation depending on how many dollars you have or what your spending responsibilities are. Nice video, fair observations.

      @DanielBryn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Tony! If youve got the $$$ why not? The Qs are no doubt excellent cameras, but.... I just couldnt justify keeping my Q2 when ive got another camera that does exactly the same, and I cant tell the difference (besides the other camera can do video better, and I like that). Loved the Leica experience, so im glad I got to test it. And one of my Q2 images has even ended up at a fine art gallery which is really cool. If I only did street, no video work. Id keep the Leica and ditch the other. No question!

    I have a q3 on pre order, but nobody can tell me when it will ship which has me looking at just grabbing a Q2 but like you said, it kinda makes no sense.
    The secondary market just makes me nervous that I will get a camera someone forgot they dropped lol.
    first world problems.

    • @DanielBryn
      @DanielBryn  ปีที่แล้ว

      lol, yeah I guess. But to be honest... Go inspect the camera before you buy if you can. Or read reviews of the seller. The site we have up here in good old Norway is great in that sense. There is of course a slight risk, but I wouldnt be too worried if the reviews are good. Id get a 2nd hand Q2 with all the extras over a new Q3 any day of the week. Thanks for watching, and have a great weekend!

    My whole reason for getting the Q2 was to slow down and be more intentional. The Q3 has wonderful new features, but in this - Leica has fallen into the trap of “keeping up with the Joneses”. Mutes points since I can’t get a Q3 any time soon. I will continue to enjoy the Q2.

    Excellent analysis. I am tempted by the Q2, but very much want to buy a Q3. It makes no sense to buy a Q2 at $5800. If it sold new for, say, $4800, I could make a better argument for it. I would really only buy the Q3 for the tilt screen. (I like to get down low for a different perspective.)

    • @DanielBryn
      @DanielBryn  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Bill, thanks a bunch man, really appreciate it. Ill be honest; I sold the Q2 and went back to fuji for so many reasons; the cost and versatility alone, I couldnt justify owning the Q2 anymore, let alone a Q3. Its a great camera, and if you only do street photography and love the 28mm (more like 24mm) AND have that ammount of money to fork out. Go for it! If you are like me and wants/needs to swap lenses, film or anything like that - get another camera. Or get a Q2 second hand to see if you Leic that Leica feeling. Lengthy answer there... Im glad for the experience, equally glad I sold it. Cheers man!

    Are the photos from q3 better in quality and clarity than q2 or is it just imagination? Cause I have that sense that Q3s are more close to Ms for some reason. How can this be explained?

    • @DanielBryn
      @DanielBryn  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Whats up Doc? I cant really explain that, and to be quite honest with you, ive gone back to fuji simply because image quality is so good on all cameras these days that I really cant tell any difference between systems on what I use cameras for. Besides I wanted my camera to serve several purposes (video + changing lenses) and couldnt justify owning a Leica. Lovely camera, just not for me. Im sure youll find detailed reviews on your question on youtube though. Thanks for watching!

    As a commercial fisherman who has had his nets destroyed by a seven foot salmon shark, I'd say the almost perfect Q2. However, I'm thinking if I go Down Under, I'll need the Leica Q3. Have heard that the Great White Sharks down there in the shark infested waters go for the really great shinny lens of the Leica Q3 even better. Supposed to be the best shark bait in the world! 😎😎

    • @DanielBryn

      GB, im you are talking about the Leica M11 for shark bait. They only consume box fresh shit reatailing at 10K and over... But if you try, I wont hold it against you.

    I put my name down on order for Q3 because the screen and extra MP appeal to me. I’ve always wanted a Lecia and I know they are expensive but you’re paying for hand made equipment. I shoot fuji while on street and travel and love using them when the light is right. But my iso limit with Fuji is 3200 maybe I push to 6400 but after that I think it falls apart. I don’t really like to crop if I can help it and with Fuji I only do 10% crop. I have just seen second hand Q2 like new with extras for €4429. Now I’m in two minds which one 🥴🥴🥴

    • @DanielBryn
      @DanielBryn  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      he he - I see. Best tip I can give; get a Q2 second hand, see if you like it, and if you think its worth it, then sell it and get the Q3 if you really want to fork out the money for minor improvements and extra MPs. I sold mine and went back to only fuji, but im glad I tried the Q2. Nice shooting experience, but too expensive, despite me shooting a lot.

    Does this mean your Q2 is a buy, review, and resell option or do you think you'll keep it? I'm really torn between the Q2 and Q3. If I'm honest, I don't think the average cost difference of £2k between a secondhand Q2 (plenty in the UK for circa £3k - with accessories) and a new Q3 is worth it. Interesting video, thank you for your thoughts.

      Hey there - I like to try out new gear, and ive always been curious about these Leicas for street photography in particular. Felt quite determined id keep the Q2 instead of my fujifilm, but after a few months of use, I just couldnt see any major differences, so I sold it. Leicas are magnificent, if you are willing to pay a premium for the red logo. But just for the price difference between the 2, like you mentioned, you can get a fully kitted out second hand fujifilm XT5. Or why not go for the fujifilm X100VI that just hit the shelves?! If you still want a Leica, go for a 2nd hand Q2, test it and see if its a match, if not, you can sell it for the exact same price! Hope this helps with your decision. Have a great saturday

      Ha! Great reply. I used a Q2 some yeats back and loved it. Back then, I couldn't afford it. These days, I use an X-Pro 2 with 2 primes, so that's the form factor / rangefinder style covered. I also have a Sony A7R4 with Zoom lenses from 14mm to 600mm for landscape and wildlife, so that's the megapixels and AF covered. The Leica is an ongoing itch! You're right. Buying and reselling a secondhand one shouldn't carry too much financial risk. Thanks again for the vid and replay 👍🏼
