In this video we talk about #apoptosis
apoptosis is a programmed #cell death pathway by which the organism gets rid of faulty cells without provoking a host #inflammation.
apoptosis can happen in both #physiologic and #pathologic instances.
The apoptosis has 3 phases: initiation, execution and degradation. initiation itself has three distinctive pathways: #intrinsic or #mitochondrial pathway and #extrinsic or death receptor-mediated pathway.
the intrinsic pathway is activated by internal factors such as growth factor deprivation, DNA damage, or protein misfolding.
the extrinsic pathway is activated by external signals via receptors. Relevant receptors are from TNF family for example TNFr-1 or Fas receptor. Fas ligand produced by T-cells would be the ligand for Fas receptor.
The execution phase is done by activating execution caspases.
Eventually what is left behind are apoptotic bodies which are phagocytosed by macrophages without provoking inflammation.
