My current fav: Roman Szmal's Autumn Green (#363). Great idea from Eve Bolt: "Stretching" a convenience color by mixing it with a single-pigment color the manufacturer used in it. For Autumn Green, that would be PY150, PR122, or PG26. You don't get mud, because you're using one of the component colors. Autumn Green turns into wide range of lovely mixes that way. Suddenly, my RS single-pigment buying madness has a motive!!! LOL

The greens! What a beautiful collection and the possibilities seem endless. Thank you for this demo,, I am beginning to see the benefits of the granulating colors. One of my favorite ways to test greens, or any secondary color, is to lay out a grid pattern with four or five different yellows along the top of the chart, and then choose four or five blues, and place each along the side of the grid.. Let's say lemon yellow is in the first square, and it is mixed with the first blue, then the next blue on the chart, then maybe a golden yellow is mixed with each of the blues, for the next row. I hope this makes sense 🙂. I really enjoy your videos and knowledge of color.

I used to only like really bright old water colours, but as I have progressed in my journey, I absolutely adore earthy colours not too much brown but I love green now I like to do floral work and I used to really not like landscapes just for painting myself, but now with the colours I can see so much more in the landscaping. Really love them now. I still love doing my florals, the most, though so different red Spinks and purples, but grains, have become my favourite.

I definitely love my transparent greens! A friend sent me a huge full pan+ of her last batch of PO49 Pigment and she wants me to do a green mixing chart for her. Hoping to get a good variation of greens. I also started yesterday making some mixes WITH my Inktense…I scribble a green, blue or yellow on my Caran D’Ache textured palette, make a thickish puddle of that inktense pigment, then, like tonight, I made a great mossy blue-green background of undersea plants with a few hints of brighter green grasses. (Mixed sun yellow w sodalite, blue apatite and one of my blue inktense..can’t remember which one, I have it written down, w the Quin gold...). I also started another background for tropical plants. All together, I’ve got about 8 very different green “puddles” on my palettes (I need to make sides for these things 😂) I’m waiting until later today (it’s 2am) to test and see if they’re still as permanent and great to layer as inktense alone. So far, I’ve got no separation (what I hoped for), BUT, still some texture with the granulating paints I mixed in. I WILL say..didn’t notice ANY drying shift so far and my grass is a bit darker than I intended, but 🤷🏼‍♀️.
Suggestion for a neutral, pale, at LEAST semi-transparent grey? Prefer a smooth one, but a little granulation is OK.

Oh how lovely!!! What a nice assignment!

Thanks for the video! Green is my very fave colour, especially chartreuse green! :D
If you are in search of some more olive green coloured pencils to supplement the gaps in Luminance, Derwent Lightfast have some great colours which nicely fill in some of the gaps. ‘Olive Earth’ and ‘Ivy’ are both lovely mid olive greens, ‘Seaweed’ is a dark, brown olive, and their 'Forest' is a very dark, moody, olive leaning green. Together, these four pencils form a nice gradient from my very favourite of all Lightfast pencils, ‘Foliage’, which is a lovely natural sap green colour. :)
Daniel Smith's Green Gold is my personal all-time fave watercolour green, a lovely chartreuse made from PY150, which adds a glow of sunlight everywhere it's used :-) - followed by DS Cascade Green, which is a lovely granulating, colour separating green, and DS Sap Green and Perylene Green. I also use Winsor and Newton, Olive, Sap and Perylene greens a great deal, as well as recently discovering Leaf Green by Holbein, which I love! :)

Lovely video, Helen. Earthy greens are my favourite! I recently treated myself to the Sennelier wooden watercolour box (had never tried their wc paints before, just soft pastels), but found it needed more earthy tones (even though I like mixing), so am awaiting some pans of earthy greens and browns to add to the set. This video made me add a few more Roman Szmal pans to the wishlist. I love Winsor & Newton's Green Gold, Permanent Sap Green, Perylene Green, and Cobalt Green Deep. Daler-Rowney have some beautiful greens in their artists watercolour range, and I believe their Olive Green is the best, it's perfect.

Love seeing all the greens! I always appreciate your videos where you discuss mixing colours. I have stumbled on some of my favourite green mixes by accident, rather than paying close attention to my warm and cool colours. If I paid more attention, it would make it so much easier to duplicate my favourites in the future. I started a mixing sketchbook last year and really need to put more time/effort into it, but that takes away from valuable painting time, so it’s a toss-up 😂. I know it would be such a valuable resource if I’d just get it done!
There are 3 convenience greens that I constantly gravitate to using together for landscapes, all by DS: undersea green, sap green and green apatite genuine. I have those 3 in multiple palettes 😊.
I also enjoy A Gallo’s olive green and MaimeriBlu’s Hooker green and Green gold. From Schmincke’s super-granulating paints, there’s one called “Forest Brown” which is really a lovely green and it’s one of my favourites. Lots of other greens that I enjoy, but those are the ones that immediately come to mind without having to think too hard.
Admission: Fell of my 2023 low-buy today and it will result in lots of mixing practice!! I ordered a few tubes of DS gouache to try out and I did NOT order a green… so mixing shall be a necessity! (Well, either that or I’ll just pull some greens from other brands that I already have 😂… but my goal was to have a limited DS gouache palette with just 8 colours plus white.)

I'm still fairly new to the whole mixing thing, but I absolutely love it, and the theory behind it!
Please tell me how you get on with the DS Gouache! I'm very jealous!

These are a lovely collection of greens. Have you ever considered adding a Perylene Green? It's actually a black pigment, PBk31, but I find it indispensable for adding darks and shadows to trees, shrubbery, etc. I would imagine one could mix something close to it by using a dioxazine purple to another green mix.

    • @helencryer

    Dear Helen,
Here are a few of my favourites....
Why not try DS Serpentine green, it is a springy, yellow natural mid green, with lovely dots of tan separation. A lighter sister to DS Apatite Green, but it is really lovely together or alone as new buds, and could be mixed with a Quin rose and a Quin Gold for the pinky new shoots on some plants. Can get it in a stick form.
As for mixing, Try a different Pb60, from say Schmincke, Delft Blue, with a Quin Gold as a nice mix, or use Qor for some explosive moving greens.
Also, I love the German brand R&K Sketch Ink, "Emma" in Khaki, as a mid to dark, olive, khaki green with no lean to yellow, blue or red, which is completely waterproof when dry for fountain pens, dip pens, or a lovely wash. It dries quickly great for left handed people, I use it as my everyday colour for writing in my Bespoke letterpress journal, made in Bowral NSW, (South West of Sydney by 2hrs.) This paper is my everyday journal, will take heavy washes, on a creamy lined paper, wide light lines, gold gilding edges in linen. I use it for out and about, and all writing dries in a few seconds. Thicker paper, but not watercolour paper, is the exception and can be flattened with a bit of weight. Try this sketch ink, with your choice of Pelikan M200, with a gold plated stainless steel nib in Extra Fine. A range of thin to thick lines can be achieved in both writing and sketching, with slight pressure.
I get most of my art supplies from Jacksons UK, the cheapest art supply shop for us in Sydney, Australia. Or you can also try Watercolour hoarder in Singapore for 1/4 pans of all the above. She is on Etsy.
Take a photo, of this, just in case you medically need the art store, lol.
While you are there try the grey Misty Morning from Roman Szmal. It separates into teal and rose in lots of water. Not a green, but a lovely unique light transparent cool grey, used by itself for design, thin it out! The pigment edges will be outlined. My favourite in his range.
    In kindred spirit,
    Eliza
