  • Great game by MJ and Pip from early stages of the 96/97 regular season. Young Dallas team couldn't do anything to stop two great players in their prime as a duo. Amazing performance.
Michael Jordan: 36 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 13/23 FG.
Scottie Pippen: 32 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 14/22 FG.
    Bulls won the game 116:97.

Yep and we have to say, when Jordan came back, he said he didn't want to "bother" Pippen because Pippen had a bigger role. He just adapted his game and that's sign of his mastery of the game. He did dribble the ball a lot more during the first three peat and even more when he was playing for Doug Collins.

I agree, great point and another reason why MJ is better than any player today... he was a basketball maestro in every possible way, when you combine that with unreal inscinct, you end up with a machine

everything in the 90's is better

not to mention how well he move around without the ball since day 1. it makes so much sense for him to dribble more during 84-90 since the team was more relying on his power to penetrate and create for his teammates.

i guess what i meant is that his dribbles are all meant to be elusive and quick enough to throw his opponents off balance or out of position. he is just so good at doing it that it makes almost every attacks of his seem very efficient. it also helps that he has been such a consistent finisher inside and outside.

yea totally. jordan has always have this type of game since college. but before the 1st retirement he did rely a little more on his explosive first steps a bit more. in the 2nd 3 pit he hardly over dribble anything and regroup with the team. it is a thing of beauty. nothing is like that nowadays.
also his instinct on offense is a great counter argument about how the defense back then was less zone like BECAUSE he simply wouldnt let zone set up in front of him.

Exactly, i have watched Kobes and Lebrons whole carrers, and they usually take too much time to see what the defense is giving them, and in the process, they allow the defense to ffully set up.
Not so with MJ, he reacts almost by instict inmediately to the defense, not allowing it to fully set up.
Glad you made that point, popeyeisgood.

MJ was @ his absolute best durning the first 3-peat (1991-1993) - when he returned to the Bulls he was still the best player in the world, but he was past his prime... still, him and Pippen were probably a Top 3 all-time duos in the history of the NBA (along with Kobe/Shaq and Magic/Kareem) - great game tho.

People always compare LBJ to this MJ.
But this isn't his athletic prime. This is mid 30s (refined game) MJ.

i think by 96/97 mj is not in his prime anymore. but yes the duo was too much for this mav squad to handle.

what you dont understand what i meant is that the way he dribbled the ball, even during his first few years of pro career, were all within the purpose of attacking with quickness and first step. he did dance around often but it is very different from the way kobe hogging the ball. besides, he broke down the d ( in his early days) like no one else, his dribbling back then was still tagged with efficiency.

his ability of escaping and breaking down double/triple team is equally instinctive as his scoring skill. hardly anything is forced, not to mention his out of the world concentration and touch on shooting. of course now you watched lebron being trapped in the ' zone' you would feel that the zone d is actually affecting the offense. but it is because lebron just doesnt have that type of scoring instinct. it is simple as that. kobe has more, but still very far off from what jordan had.

Great duos in basketball Larry and McHale, Jordan and Scottie, Shaq and Kobe, Magic and Kareem and other Lakers players Michsel Cooper Byron Scott, Ac Green, Jordsn and Kukos BJ armstrong, Malone and Stockgon, Lebron , D Wade and Chris Bosh, Barkley, Dr J, Moses Malone. Favorite rivalry is Bird vs Magic and other sports Alii vs Frazier in boxing.
