I like how candid you are about wearing your influence on your sleeve. I really dislike disingenuous artists who claim they don't lift material. EVERY ARTISTS STEALS IN SOME CAPACITY.
I took guitar from the same dude for 11 something years and only stopped because I left for college. He was a fucking wizard, a true master of the instrument in every aspect. My favorite lesson I ever got from him was something to the effect of "good artists know how to write music. The best artists know how to steal music" If you aren't borrowing things from the artists that inspire you to make music, then why would you even bother making it? You probably won't even like it if it doesn't sound like something you know you love.
For someone who doesn't know shit about guitars there are tutorials for every fucking niche genre except emo it seems. I can't thank you enough for this, as a beginner I'm a little tired of only playing rock/metal/blues stuff.. I still can't really get the sound I'm looking for well enough but I'm still trying, thanks once more. Keep it up!
+Via Dolorosa I totally agree. Looking for tips regarding Emo can be a nightmare. I've been there (actually i STILL am there). That's why i decided to make some tutorials of my own on Ultimate Guitar a while back. Check it out if you're interested (www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1644659), and spread the word! I want to stir up some more conversation regarding this stuff.
Hey man I don’t know if you still check this channel but I started playing this style of guitar a couple of years ago and this video was super useful back then so thanks for making this
awesome, look forward to hearing some of that emo stuff come to fruition! I play drums in an emo-y/math-y band (in the UK), if you ever wanna throw some ideas over or need some drum ideas feel free to hit me up
I kept waiting for you to do open palm muted riffs focusing on frets 7, 8, and 10 😂😂 clearly not quite the same genre of emo Also, I expected to learn nothing from this but actually learned a lot and feel inspired. :D
Quick question. What tuning do you play? I know bands such as American football, and tiny moving parts tend to use a lot of DAEAC#E. maybe I missed you mention it.
The chord (considering the drop tuned string) is a Major 7th though. it has the 1, 5, And 7th. in fact if you add the 4th fret of the next string over you get the 3rd, to get a fully voiced Maj7th.
this probs sounds stupid but im not a skilled guitarist but is it possible to involve tapping like this on a fender telecaster? i've tried tapping before but it def didn't really sound like tapping but it might've just been me
I'm only two years in playing guitar and I'm still learning on how to to finger tap/pulloff/slide and I'm wondering what beginner songs I should learn of this style of playing, any you would recommend ?
It's probably just your sick playing, but what amp do you use? my buddy does hardcore too and has the same guitar but in a 7 string Also, THANK YOU, this has been so helpful
Midwest Emo is heavily Math looking into bands like Tiny Moving Parts, American Football, The Brave Little Abacus, etc,. Although if you're here you probably already know those bands
+fromfaith throughlies Not really man. Theory isn't my strong suit and I realized most of the stuff about theory I talked about here is completely wrong. Just play different notes with power chords and see which ones you like. Try some power chord inversions too.
I mean theres the argument that some of this could be used for some twinkly skramz shit like age sixteen, suis la lune, etc (as I was planning too on one point) but youre right its not what you would normally think of as skramz
Thanks for the tips. The pictures on your wall are crooked.
Todd Michael Johnson adds to the emo
Todd Michael Johnson I'm glad I'm not the only one
Todd Michael Johnson "But the pictures on your wall are crooked" is an excellent emo song title.
Haven't you ever been depressed?
im stealing that thanks for the song name
I like how candid you are about wearing your influence on your sleeve. I really dislike disingenuous artists who claim they don't lift material. EVERY ARTISTS STEALS IN SOME CAPACITY.
Yeah I mean everyone does it wether it's conscious or not. There's only 7 notes 🤷🏻♂️

@@Fenix40 Theres 12 already in just a regular chromatic scale,
and more in scales with quarter steps etc like for example turkish folk.
@@theshadow6528 You know what I meant
@@Fenix40 not really

+Gnarrkhaz Dude this is really good. I think probably much better than mine haha
Ben Nagy
Thanks!
Thank you so much! This video was a big help, exactly what I needed.
what works for me is just using the DadGad Tuning you can make a lot of great melodies with it :)
maj 7 chords aren't diminished chords
They def aren't. All of the theory stuff I spout in this video is pretty much wrong
+Ben Nagy nonetheless you got the info across. Nice tutorial, just wanted to make sure that people knew as to not get confused.
who
cares
dude
That last riff still gets me damn
Hey man I don’t know if you still check this channel but I started playing this style of guitar a couple of years ago and this video was super useful back then so thanks for making this
I’m just trying to learn the ukulele
CGDGBD if you like drop tuning and want a mid-western emo tuning. C G goes down and low E
That "diminished one" is just a major 7th.
Christopher Wojdak you're right all of the theory in this is basically completely wrong
No worries, you have great tips! The "suspended one" is a power chord with an added 9th.
More like “how to write math rock riffs”
Something like that
Midwest emo.
Math rock is just emo jazz
@@ComradePilas and an analogy is a thought with another thoughts hat on.
That last riff is sweet as
Thanks! It's one of my favorites too bad I haven't found anything to use it for yet
You play in a band? Would love to hear it in the context of a song
+Cemo123321 I'm in a melodic hardcore band rn but I have an emo project in the works
awesome, look forward to hearing some of that emo stuff come to fruition! I play drums in an emo-y/math-y band (in the UK), if you ever wanna throw some ideas over or need some drum ideas feel free to hit me up
+Cemo123321 dude I totally have a bunch of demos that need drums. If you want to check them out and program some for me that would be so sick
I kept waiting for you to do open palm muted riffs focusing on frets 7, 8, and 10 😂😂 clearly not quite the same genre of emo
Also, I expected to learn nothing from this but actually learned a lot and feel inspired. :D
step one: be a emo, it will come naturlaly
I might not ever know how to play this prog/emo stuff but it will help me write my own stuff, thanks (:
Great tutorial man, can't thank you enough. Got any advice on just improving in general?
+Alien8M Take it slow, Practice a lot, Get guitar pro, Write your own music, Always be looking for things to improve on and new techniques to learn
Ben Nagy please mention some bands that i could learn of
*Consume. Enhance. Replicate*
AURORA //BLACK consume replicate enhance
Hot damn you can play haha nice video man!
i hope this guy comes back
me too man
Mr. Twitchy stach... Great emo song title also!
Are you related to the Hungarian communist leader of the 1950s?
lmao maybe? I doubt it. Nagy is apparently a pretty common surname in Hungary. That would be cool tho
Imre Nagy? AHAHAHA
how to play emo riffs
1. be sad
Any chance you could tab out 3:07 ?
Do you have a link to the reddit article?
I don't this was so long ago sorry :/
Dude so helpful! thank you
What kind of effect do you use for the chords at 2:20? Love that sound. Thanks
the camera was just overloaded lol
my g u a legend, thx so much
Quick question. What tuning do you play? I know bands such as American football, and tiny moving parts tend to use a lot of DAEAC#E. maybe I missed you mention it.
Chuck Torres all of the videos of my riffs are in drop d but I use everything from FACGCE to DAEAC#E to DADF#AD
Chuck Torres look into Owen (mike kinsellas solo stuff after AF) he plays with a lot of open tunings still, ive been fiddling with CGDGBD
Ben Nagy this video aint in drop d
@andre it's probably drop c# then my b It's not an alternate tuning tho
Faça um vídeo sobre o set de pedais indicados, por favor.
4:40 what chord is that?
Tabbed out it would look like
E
B
G
D-------4
A-------5
D-------5--
+Ben Nagy so the 6th string is G?
+Jean Mitchell Martin D
The chord (considering the drop tuned string) is a Major 7th though. it has the 1, 5, And 7th. in fact if you add the 4th fret of the next string over you get the 3rd, to get a fully voiced Maj7th.

el doggo teles would actually be better for this sound tbh you just have to practice more. Buy a compressor so it's a little easier
Hey buen vídeo, llegué 6 años tarde pero aún así me agrada.
Sigo escuchando Emocore y Midwest actualmente :'D
I'm only two years in playing guitar and I'm still learning on how to to finger tap/pulloff/slide and I'm wondering what beginner songs I should learn of this style of playing, any you would recommend ?
+Keven Salcedo Atreyu - Right Side of the Bed
+Ben Nagy thanks dude I really appreciate it 😊
yo dont know if you answer this, is there somewhere i can find the suspended and diminished chords for drop d?
do you mean DADGBE?
learn to build chords
Parker Petty periphery profile pic 😍 😍
Parker Petty Ugh. 💗 that profile pic. Are you a fan of Periphery?
宇宙コンビニ/uchu konbini/space convenience store is lit. it sucks they broke up tho
What guitar effects would you recommend for getting the best sound possible for this genre? (especially for tapping)
If I was building a pedal board for this genre it would include a compressor, reverb, delay, looper, and a boost of some sort
bbeaup you don't need one, I've honestly never had a compressor. It definitely makes it 100x easier thov
It's probably just your sick playing, but what amp do you use?
my buddy does hardcore too and has the same guitar but in a 7 string
Also, THANK YOU, this has been so helpful
This is honesty just a crate practice amp that I'm playing on lol My go to for this kind of stuff would be an Ac-30 though
Any recommendations for playing emo riffs but keeping a drop tuning? Any chord shapes you'd recommend? I usually play in drop c - drop a#
capo
Joshua Moscicki honestly this video is that exact thing lol
Joshua Moscicki try the open d tuning DADF#AD and just transpose lower if needed
Just learn how to build chords. And anything on the E string (now a D string) play a full step higher
Ayyy drop D bros for life
Yo what is a good guitar to play original screamo on? I need help. Budget of 350 to 400 bux.
shitty japanese guitars
Carlos Vizcarra buy like 5 first act toys r us guitars
Carlos Vizcarra buy like a 70$ electric guitar off eBay
This is fantastic!!!
What exactly do you classify as "emo" music? I am a fingerstyle guitarist that happened to stumble upon this video.
Some of my favorite emo bands are: tommy boys, algernon cadwallader, Marietta, into it over it, gulfer
I will check it out because it really sounds like the style of fingerstyle I play.
yo bud! what tuning is this? your riffs are sick!
Jon Azevedo drop d
This is math rock
Def mathy-emo but not straight up math-rock
Midwest Emo is heavily Math looking into bands like Tiny Moving Parts, American Football, The Brave Little Abacus, etc,.
Although if you're here you probably already know those bands
hey can you do a video of diferent powerchoards you use?
+fromfaith throughlies Not really man. Theory isn't my strong suit and I realized most of the stuff about theory I talked about here is completely wrong. Just play different notes with power chords and see which ones you like. Try some power chord inversions too.

+fromfaith throughlies shit like
3-5-5. - C5
5-3-5. - Dm7
5-5-3. - Gm
3-5-7. - Csus2
DROP TUNED OR STANDARD?
+fromfaith throughlies standard, root on the a string
what if I'm a beginner
these arent emo riffs there more like math rock/metal riffs
or you've just never heard midwest emo.
of course i have i made a mistake even tho these do fit under math rock as well
Paul Smith yeah indie emo and Midwest are all pretty much math rock as well. They kind of all blend, it’s really what the sound is for indie emo
spudbrain ok buddy
You rock man! Thanks.
That crooked picture frame in the back is driving me fucking insane.
What was that at 3:50 ?
what do you mean?
Ben Nagy
What song were you playing?
what tuning are you in during the video
+BigElephant Drop D
+Ben Nagy The last riff reminds me of Settlefish...
+Gregory Downey I've never heard of them, what song do you think it reminds you of?

thank you a lot :), appreciate you
What tuning did you use?
