    is it possible to play these types of chords/riffs in starndard? Math rock sounds so pretty to me but I’d like to be able to use these chords/riffs in other genres and don’t wanna re learn in a new tuning :/

    • @LetsTalkAboutMathRock
      @LetsTalkAboutMathRock  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hey. Thanks for the question. You can play this sorta thing in standard too. It may be slightly more challenging, and/or you may not be able to get the same over all sound a different tuning can give, but achievable non the less.

    • @o.a.47
      @o.a.47 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You definitely can, but it narrows down your options a lot. The downside of alternative tunings is that you can’t play a song everywhere, but it opens up a lot of new possibilities for songs

    Been playing guitar for 8 or so years, I can name the notes on the fretboard and essentially play anything that comes to mind, but this stuff boggles me, especially the note chart etc. I can somewhat hear the intervals but I just can't get there with this stuff. I've never tried other tunings, is this stuff possible in standard? If not I should really start experimenting with other tunings.
    Thanks for your videos man :)

    • @LetsTalkAboutMathRock
      @LetsTalkAboutMathRock  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hey rachet. I'd say it's achievable in standard. May be more difficult in some cases, but it can be done. I've written midwest emo twinkly stuff in standard many times. In fact I play write in standard 99% of the time.

    What guitar string gauge would you recommend?

    • @LetsTalkAboutMathRock
      @LetsTalkAboutMathRock  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would depend on the tuning. If you're tuning strings up, use a lighter guage for that string and the opposite when tuning down. There is a caculator out there for this but I can't find it! Haha

      thx for the link. my bad I forgot you actually did a vid. about this already.
      Im still a little unsure about the notes I use. after you explain the basic triad (1,4,5) of C which should be C,F,G (right?!). you talk about making them more jazzy by adding the 7. is B the 7th? or is my starting point already wrong ?! lol
      thank you so much for helping .

  • @MyNameIsExclamation

    This may be a stupid question, but why does a non-standard tuning help in this?

    • @hippyhobo6285
      @hippyhobo6285 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because this is an open tuning. With standard it's a bit harder to make chords like the ones shown in the video. It is possible to do it in standard tunings (I have a squire tuned UP half a step from E standard, so it's F A# D# G# C F for math rock). Open tunings just make it easier, especially if you have a capo.
