Also for them not to worry about living too far away. There are organizations that help unite shelter dogs to their new families when there’s a bit of a distance. If someone is serious about taking her and the only thing holding them back is the miles, they need to look into finding an organization that can help with that. Or start a gofundme campaign to raise money for such a trek. And vlog the journey (and after) for TH-cam. That would one wonderful story that people would love to follow!! Just my two cents.

I really hope giving her airplay gets her adopted, but this couple needs to really think about what they’re doing. To bring this pup home and love and cuddle it for a weekend, letting it think it’s found a home, only to then bring it back to the shelter, is rather unfeeling. It’s about the pup, not about the couple trying to “feel good” about themselves.

In the main I agree, with the codicil that ultimately their goal is to publicize the fact that this dog needs and deserves a good home. So sad that this doggo with all her wonderful traits has that one flaw that keeps her from getting a loving home. The aggressive behavior towards other dogs has problems beyond just not being able to have another dog in the household, but the liability of the dog causing harm to another dog while out on a walk has to be considered. Hope someone has a solution for this otherwise very sweet doggo.

Have y’all physically seen what’s it like at the shelter? There’s a reason why this program exist. Programs like this, what the couple is doing in this video, has helped dogs get adopted due to exposure or even working with the dog to get out of their shells after their ex-owners decided to abandon them. Getting them out for a day or weekend, is a lot better then them being cooped up 24 hours for 7 days but that’s just my opinion.

Ok, really quick to dispell the myth that a scared dog can't go into a home with other dogs; Yes, it is hard, but usually trauma is what caused their agression in the first place. With patience, love and slowly growing interactions, every dog can be resocialised to be kinder to other dogs

Through many therapy sessions of slowly working with the dog and understanding their fear, aggression, etc. I think this sweet girl very much deserves a chance at getting to the core of her problems because regardless if she is adopted into a one dog home she will still have times where other dogs are involved and she needs to work through that aggression.

I have never commented on a TH-cam video before, but felt strongly enough about this to leave a comment. I am from the UK where we have a very popular breed called the Staffordshire Bull Terrier (bull breed). I am an owner of one of these beautiful dogs. I also worked for our national animal rescue charity. I can tell you from experience as an owner and former rehoming centre employee, no matter what the breed, no matter what the previous back story, no matter what the breed characteristics, many dogs can be successfully rehabilitated into a forever loving home. It takes love, patience, determination and above all the ‘right’ person/s to match the dog. As a collective group of animals lovers, please can we send positive vibrations/thoughts to this beautiful girl to help her find a forever home. The Dodo....... Can u imagine the drop in her stomach and her heart when she realized that all of that love and attention was now gone?? THAT IS CRUEL!! In case you missed it, in the video description there were some links including one to an Instagram account dedicated specifically to finding Sookie her forever home. Which, how awesome is THAT?!
But yes, just in case here is a direct quote from adopt_sookie_ny on IG.
"I have been seeing so many negative comments towards the couple who took me home for the weekend, which makes me laugh because those people are literally missing the entire purpose of it. One of them works as an editor with the Dodo, and wanted to help get a needy dog adopted. What better way to do that, then to take said dog home for a weekend foster, get to know her well, document the weekend, create a video, and share it with the Dodo community!? Over two million people have already seen my video, so do you think this was a good thing?? I was not traumatized to return to the shelter, I was very happy to see all my besties. At the shelter, I live in an office with a half a dozen employees who love me and take care of me. I am just fine! And I know my happily ever after is close. So stop bashing the amazing people who opened their home to me for the weekend to get me this exposure, which will ultimately be the reason I'm adopted! I wish everyone would take home a longtimer for the weekend and help get them adopted! Weekend fosters are amazing ways to give dogs a break from shelter life, and gives the shelter more info about how the dog is in a home!"
If you're curious about how Sookie continues to fair, check out that IG from the description. Or just plug in her username that I posted at the beginning and search for her on IG. Heck, here it is again, just in case!

This couple helped get the word out, and now Sookie is adopted. Besides, they already had a dog - they couldn't keep her as Sookie's not dog friendly.

An adorable darling! I hope she found her forever home with a loving family.
So many people in the comments complaining about how this was a bad idea because she got a taste of a loving home and was then taken back to the shelter. Setting aside that the ENTIRE point of this process is to prepare her for a home and bring awareness to her situation, I feel like people aren't considering the fact that if they hadn't taken her for the weekend, she would have spent those days at the shelter... To an animal that lives in a shelter, every day they can experience a home is meaningful to them.

For anyone who would love to rescue this sweet gal, not to worry about living too far away.

That's a wonderful idea!! I will give that some serious consideration - especially since I know everyone who has commented on how much they want Sookie to find her forever home (or "fome", as some people say) will want to help!! ❤🐾🐾❤ I absolutely LOVE pitties and have been wanting to adopt one from a shelter!! I've had several pitbulls, if you consider the fact that I've had 3 litters (2 generations) born in my home in the past! They are my most favorite breed, as they are the most loveable, lovING, loyal, friendly, misunderstood 🐕 breeds out there, and I am ALWAYS advocating for them!! Whether it's signing petitions, or informing as many people as I can about just how WONDERFUL "pibbles" are. I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to bring Sookie "FOME" with me, as would my son!!!! However, we live in Ohio and don't have the resources it would take to go pick her up. 😢 So, if she still needs a home, I'm gonna go for it!! Thank you for the terrific ideas on getting around the whole distance thing, and....Wish US Luck!!! 🙏❤🐾🐾❤🙏😊

I've had dogs who "hate cats & don't get along with other dogs" all learn to live together. Patience, love & leadership in my situation resulted in a number of dogs and cats coexisting & eventually becoming family. I can only speak from my own experience, but I refused to give up on any of them & the result was that every creature has learned to live with one another harmoniously.

So, the good news - she's been adopted (per Instagram/other poster). This video, and them taking her out for the weekend - gave her the social exposure she needed to show that she is a great dog! Her dislike of other dogs is likely what kept her there. That can be dealt with in training! I just watched Dodo's video about the Cane Corso who didn't like other dogs - until she got the Best proper training and got over it. Donating specifically for training for dogs like Sookie would be a good thing! Thank God she was at a "no kill" shelter, or she would have been a goner.

To all of you saying "Oh how could they?" Yes I agree it is a little short sighted on their part, really only done to make themselves feel better not all the dog, but they Can't adopt her. Not only do they Have a 10 year old one eyed beagle already, but they are not experienced enough to handle her aggression, making her a danger. They can't give up their own dog, no one could Ever ask them to, and they can't put it in danger with a large dog aggressive dog. Watching them pull her on the end of a badly used choke chain while she was lunging at that other dog with them just going "no! no don't do that!" had me holding my breath and cringing. That is Not how you handle a dog like that, and people that try to just "love it out of them" are the ones having tragic things happen with the dog. They knew they weren't the right place for her, and they were responsible about it even though even They stated they were wondering why they didn't keep her. Reality. She needs an experienced home and now I Hope with all my heart this showcase will find her that home and she gets adopted soon. Update: After looking, this dog stays in the office at the shelter with people, not in a cage all the time, and she has already gotten adoption inquiries now. This experience for her was probably a very good learning one as well. She WILL get adopted from this!

Beniya K no dog deserves to be isolated from his species whether he’s a people person or not. What’s going to happen if an isolated dog like this is ever on the loose and sees another dog? He’ll probably shred him to pieces because no one ever taught him to mingle among other dogs. This is for safety reasons too for other dogs to Invest in his training or maybe you’re a pitbull expert... I don’t know

@@emke9326 I agree with you that resocializing is better but that will take alot of time and maybe money.
Also you cannot just randomly test this out and let other dogs get injured bc another dog needs to get resocialized. I rather have the dog out of the shelter and in a home without other dogs and always on a leash when on a walk than that the dog stays in the shelter.
I hope someone has the courage, time and money to train this dog and otherwise maybe this dog gets to go to a loving family that lives on an isolated farm or something.

Dogs need to be socialized when they are young. They have a critical socialization period and an imprinting period. If that is missed or something bad happens during imprinting they will remember for the rest of their lives. Not all older dogs can be properly socialized.

She didn't go back to a cage though. It's on her Twitter, the shelter lets her run around. Plus this kind of thing is actually really good for dogs who are in shelters, gives them a chance to experience and stretch their legs and gives the shelter a better idea of what the personality is like. And makes them a lot more adoptable too. It's like a vacation and while it may seem cruel to bring them back it's crueller to leave them sitting in the cage without a break.

They didn’t take her home to keep or even foster her, they took her home so they could make a video showing that she’s a wonderful dog to have in a home with the hope that the perfect future dog-parent for her would see her and fall in love. To show that this dog (and any dog) who has spent an absurdly long time in a shelter environment can be the sweetest, gentlest, goofiest dog when they’re in a loving home-that the shelter environment hasn’t ruined their ability thrive in a different one.

@JiuJitsuhairdontcare it's definitely gonna damage her. How would you feel if you were homeless for 7 years, put in a 5 star hotel with friends and then put back on the streets? Or if you lived in a group home for 7 years, someone takes you for a week and then returns you cause you didn't get along with their biological children? As a human you're intellectually capable of reasoning and being rational but all a dog know would is that they were taken out for probably what seemed like forever, only to be returned to the place that probably has smells associated with negative, unhappy, non stimulating experiences. I don't think anyone with sense actually believes that a dog enjoys being caged all day around poop/pee smells and loud anxious barks 24/7. Ask a volunteer just how low a dogs spirit can get after being returned/surrendered. They're not as smart as humans but they're not dumb at all

I understand there intentions, but I see the flip side and the flip side is so much more of a sad experience for the sweetie. I am actually crying over this because I am a dog rescuer and a ASPCA member and this really will screw this baby girl psychologically. So now if she ever is adopted she’s going to feel like it’s only for a moment and she won’t be able to adjust necessarily because she’s going to think that she’s going to be tossed out within a day or two like Tuesdays trash. This is just sooooo horrible to me.

@@davidpollard3522 maybe with other dogs but not Sookie. She didn't live in a kennel or a cage. But in an office with stuff loving her, taking her in walks and overall taking care of her. She was lonely at all. And now she has a forever home and you can see that she's very well acclimated already and is happy where she is. She's well behaved and does normal dog things and her owners are in love

I can not believe that she has been in the shelter for 7 years she is such a beautiful girl I really hope that she will soon get her forever home where she will be loved and spoilt rotten and will not spend the rest of her life in a kennel

I love how you guys are hating that the dog wasn't adopted and put back in the shelter. If you were listening, they said they couldn't keep her because she just wasn't good around other dogs and they have another dog too. Sure, they could've trained her but they think that it's just best for her to find a family who has no other pets. They took this pupper out so she could have a taste of what it'll be like when someone finally adopts her. Seven years a long time but she'll get there :)

I agree! Because these people took the time to share the pups story. I commend them.
