I completely agree. My theory is the audience was more okay with Caroline and Elena because they didn’t look like teens, but Davina actually looks very young so it’s a bit harder for us to accept.

People were not overlooking it when the show came out. People have called it weird the entire decade since this show’s been out. That being said, some fans can make allowances because of the genre of the show and how drastically messed up all the characters are.

Klaus has this weird thing with Rebekah like he's a jealous ex and can't stand her being happy with anyone. The family dynamic makes for an interesting show but Rebekah deserves better than she gets sometimes.
Yep, Klaus is so controlling/abusive with each of his siblings, but Rebekah as the sole sister for a millennium has gotten the brunt of some really weird dynamics (with Kol, too). They call her a slut every time she falls in love (despite it only happening a handful of times and not really more than any of her brothers sans Finn, who she’s been alive for more of the time than). Like, at some point falling for people Klaus is less likely to kill (Marcel, after that Stefan) becomes a coping mechanism- maybe he won’t kill this one. Except then he gets possessive of one or the other and still punishes her or them (“can’t touch what is mine”). And when the guys were talking about how Elijah wouldn’t get with the mother of Klaus’ child- he and Klaus both fell for the first Petrova doppelgänger they saw as humans, and then Elijah was still enamored with the next- Katherine- and Klaus blamed him for almost half of their lifetimes for letting Kat slip out of his hands. And right before this show started Elijah had been back with her. They were the predecessors to the Salvatores with brotherly love triangles. Hayley isn’t just physically similar to Kat (to some minor extent)- there is a lot of shadowing in the poor girl Elijah feels the need to protect after she’s drawn into Klaus’ sphere. (And of course, Kat used Hayley as one of her Katspaws last season of TVD before deciding to eliminate her)
