  • Previously likened to a "plank" or "canoe paddle," the Blackguard Telecaster is now one of the most coveted guitars in history. Shelby explains why, taking us through the guitar's development, its importance as a forerunner of the electrified solid-body, its defining components, and everything else that makes our three Blackguards-the '51 Fender Telecaster, '53 Fender Esquire, and '53 Fender Telecaster-so remarkable, while a few of our friends play their favorite tunes, including some of the very ones that made the Blackguard famous.

    • @anthonyc1883

      J Stet Perhaps the guitar had already been stripped or badly refinished long ago. Lots of old guitars get violated over time, and there's nowhere to go but up at that point. Hence, the refin we're looking at in this video.

  • @marceloherrera887
    @marceloherrera887 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, can you share the wiring of the Esquire? During the Stones cover (excellent by the way), the tip of the selector is always in position 3, but surely it doesn´t sound like the humbucker alone, wheter atenuated or not. Even less so when sometimes is played over the last frets of the neck, ala Richards: it should be darker, but it sounds exactly like Richards! It would be great to know the wiring and what every position does. Thanks!

  • @Niloy63
    @Niloy63 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    On the '53 Tele (@4:42), how can the second position be the neck pickup, and the third position be a really dark neck pickup?

    • @joemontgomery6658
      @joemontgomery6658 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The third position is wired to a capacitor, which cuts the treble. The wiring also bypasses the tone potentiometer. It’s like having the tone pot turned all the way down all the time

    A boutique shop was kind enough to let me pick up an original '52 blackguard recently. I was just strumming it acoustically just in awe and disbelief of the $21,000 legendary axe resting on my thigh... The owner offered to let me plug it into a little tube amp. I was there with my dad and he declined because he was in a rushed mood. I'll never forgive him, once in a lifetime opportunity missed!

I don't understand modern music but just keep doing what your doing". After that he would show up at gigs and raves clapping his hsnds and dancing round like he was 8 years old. Thanks Dad and Mum for lending me the dough for a Fender twin(£90) 1979 though.Then he struck again but that's another story for another day.

    In 1951, wasn’t it still a Nocaster? I thought 52 was the first telecaster. But this is apparently a 1951 telecaster? Could it have a neck from a later date?

  • @AB-vn2jc

    Just once, I wish one of these demonstrator guys on youtube would at least TRY demoing a vintage Telecaster with the bridge plate ON. That's how it was intended, and it'd be nice to hear how the bridge pickup sounds with the metal cover.

    • @SergeCeyral
      @SergeCeyral 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tried to do so, and the "ashtray" brings a real trouble, because you cannot mute (at all) the strings, with the edge of the right hand : you must shift your hand forward to do so, and it ruins your playing ; as palm muting is an important part of the Tele sound, the cover is back in the case...

      @Jacobcfuller 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Come on no one has ever used that thing

    • @SergeCeyral
      @SergeCeyral 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Jacobcfuller Yep, and I forgot to mention that the famous "twang" is also ruined by the ashtray : maybe because that metal piece makes a shield for the magnetic field around the strings (I dunno ?), but experiment by yourself.... I discard it because I can't pick strings close to the bridge but, after all, Albert Collins could play fairly decently WITH it !

    • @User-jk8wq
      @User-jk8wq 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jared Sapp Putting it upside down doesn’t actually affect the sound. You need to flip the magnet in one of the pickups for that to happen

    • @realgoodmind
      @realgoodmind 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@User-jk8wq I thought that is what Peter Green used to do to get that quack in his old Burst? Putting it in upside down made it out of phase.

    • @User-jk8wq
      @User-jk8wq 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Jared Sapp Common misconception there. The neck pickup stopped working and so he had it rewound at Selmer’s Music shop. The techie accidentally put the magnet in the wrong way round at the end, and the pickup being upside down was just a careless mistake. The whole out of phase sound Greenie became famous for was just a fluke!
