In historical times, "jail fever" or "gaol fever" was common in English prisons, and is believed by modern authorities to have been typhus. It often occurred when prisoners were crowded together into dark, filthy rooms where lice spread easily.
Could have been any infectious desease causing fever. People coughing into each other's faces, malnourished and driven to exhaustion. Sounds like heaven for viruses and bacteria

You got some doozies there! I didn’t know much of HH Holmes story. He lives up to his rep even eliminating all of the myths. What a scoundrel! Nice long WIN vid. Thank you. ☕️🌻
What I love about these Victorian true crime accounts is that they prove race has nothing to do with crime. Neither does gender. But poverty, usually due to classism and withholding opportunities will certainly motivate people to commit crime in various ways and the constant oppression of poverty will make you put empathy to the side and encourage exploitation amongst the higher classes.
Yep, it's been proven that education, opportunities and financial stability halves crime. If people aren't desperate, why risk it all? Most prefer to live normal lives, with only the looney fringe being those who commit crimes.
Really? And then we had the case of the two brothers who turned out totally differently. It's often like that. One member of the family going off the deep end and the rest look on in horror or never had a clue that was happening. We see that all the time. There used to be the phrase "poor but honest."
@@653j521 I don't think either of the first 2 commenters were excusing anything, just stating facts. Like yeah it's wrong to commit crimes but the simple truth is, the more money is concentrated at the top, the more crime you're going to have. And it's interesting that you praise someone who is "poor but honest" as if dishonesty is the default character of poor people. There's pllllllenty of dishonest rich people, many of whom got rich BY BEING dishonest.
Thats very manipulative thus typical. It proves it does but that one of each was manipulative enough throughout history to make their own and others overlook and look elsewhere. Its not that it has nothing... its all about positioning. Whatever one group hasn't done as much is often because they haven't had the same opportunities via positioning to do so

A stellar job again, with entrancing narration! Thank you from across the pond for busting myths surrounding HH Holmes. He wasn't a serial killer. He killed those who were inconvenient to him or could make him some money. The "Murder Castle" was newspaper sensationalism, which unfortunately continues to be believed today.
He was definitely a serial killer. "Serial killers murder three or more victims, but each victim is killed on separate occasions. Unlike mass murderers and spree killers, serial killers usually select their victims, have cooling-off periods between murders, and plan their crimes carefully"
@@omniexistus No he was a serial killer, a mass killer kills four or more people at one location during one continuous period of time, whether it is done within a few minutes or over a period of days.

What a delightfully lengthy surprise! And you put up a normal video today as well. Keep it up! Your channel has grown 10 fold from when I first stumbled upon it and I believe it's only up from here for you :3
In historical times, "jail fever" or "gaol fever" was common in English prisons, and is believed by modern authorities to have been typhus. It often occurred when prisoners were crowded together into dark, filthy rooms where lice spread easily.
Could have been any infectious desease causing fever. People coughing into each other's faces, malnourished and driven to exhaustion. Sounds like heaven for viruses and bacteria
WOW!!! A series of stories by my favorite historian of unusual behaviors. Fabulous. Thank you!
I was quite happy to see the length of this video. I love your narration and attention to detail. Your channel is the best!
Love these videos!!
This is my first time to this channel, and I love it! You’ve got a new subscriber. Such interesting, unique stories that I’ve never heard about before. Very refreshing. I love your narration and your passion just seeps through the screen! Xxx
Ooh a few stories in one, yay. Thank you dear one. Huge fan. Blessed be.
I really enjoy the longer length videos. Please keep up the great job.
I have just come across this channel and am intrigued as I'm currently reading a book called Rivals of the Ripper. Unsolved murders of women in late victoriana London. So enjoyed the fact that you are doing similar stories.
Love this long episode I’ve played it twice and fallen asleep straight away 😴 thank you ! Can’t wait for some more longer ones ❤️
I really like this compilation of short stories. Just perfect!!
You have such a pleasant and easy listening voice. Only one problem, it relaxes me so much that I keep nodding off.....LOL. Really enjoy listening to you tell us these stories. I believe that you and Mr. Ballen are the best story tellers I have ever listened to here on the internet. Thank you for sharing with us and you have a new subscriber.
What an interesting post. The narrator is straight-forward and knowledgeable, even as he's telling the most horrific details. Well done.
I absolutely love this channel! Great work, fantastic history.
Another great episode! Don't stop, don't even slow down. You're getting better and better at making these videos. You're getting it down to a science.
I love this show!! Your narration is superb, and it's so beautifully presented. It's so very interesting how crimes were investigated, and punishments administered. So different today. I love your channel, Thank-you!!! 💕
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! You are the first person I have ever heard tell the actual facts of the H.H. Holmes Case. So many people just vomit out the sensationalized stories that were published at the time and not the actual police records of the events.
i love true crime from the past AND your narration.... thank you!
I love to listen to you thank you for taking the time to share these stories with us ,blessing from New Orleans Louisiana
Only somewhat recently found your channel and how glad I am that I did! My only regret is that I have now completely caught up on all your videos xD Your work is very well done! I really appreciate the calm, factual, and respectful manner in which you present the details and information of a story or case, and the moments of wit, breaking expression, or occasional giggles are perfectly sprinkled in. Especially for the stories set in England, I love that you go to their present day locations to show them as well. Rambling now, but again, amazing work, and thank you for sharing it with us!
Riveting voice and stories! Thank you
Love this channel, LOVE the way the stories are presented. Always looking forward to the next episode.👌👌👌
Hello Mr Brodie, I am enjoying yet another wonderful episode of Victorian crime stories. I love listening to your soothing voice. I’m a subscriber and a fan. Thank you for your attention to detail and truth in each story. Awesome work!
I clicked on the video and seeing the length of the it I was “Buckle in, this will be fun!” I was excited to see a compilation of several of his amazing stories! I haven’t missed an episode and totally enjoyed perusing through these again Thank you for your incredible stories and gifting us with your incredible story telling!
Excellent video. Fascinating stories & great presentation. Thanks!
I do love these stories, but the way you tell them improves them enormously. Thank you.
Thanks for this...very good narrative😊
What a wonderful way to wake up! I forgot to turn my alarm off and when I picked up the phone to do so, there appeared a notification from you! I forgot all about going back to sleep. Lol. Thank you. Love the argyle sweater! I love it and it's hard to find now. I like real ones, not the ones with the pattern printed on the front. Hope you're having a good day, or evening as I don't know where you are and thank you again for the video! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
you have a very good narration voice, and i love how you deliver the information. Victorian crime is always interesting, especially when the coppers track down the criminals, and how they figure it out with the limited science they had.
Love your channel!!!
Stumbled upon this channel by accident, subscribed because of the quality content! 😊
I had no idea the Victorian era was so brutally bloody! Interestingly, the extreme violence cannot possibly be blamed on the influence of video games, films and the like, leading to a head scratching quandary!
Books.
I found this accidentally but I can’t stop watching them his voice makes it really watchable I watch a lot of crime programmes but really love this one thank you x
Excellent work there sir. Thank you so much. 👍
You got some doozies there! I didn’t know much of HH Holmes story. He lives up to his rep even eliminating all of the myths. What a scoundrel!
Nice long WIN vid. Thank you. ☕️🌻
HH Holmes is something. Read Devil in the white city. I can’t remember the author

Skål, år og fred(Cheers, good years and peace) from Denmark
Excellent narration and introducing me to crimes I hadn't heard about. Well done!
I'm rather enjoying the delivery and narration on your videos

Whatever one group hasn't done as much is often because they haven't had the same opportunities via positioning to do so
First time listener! Noticed the channel links to Ask a Mortician and That Chapter and i cannot describe how much it joys me to have another great channel on my list of favorites. A great find and right at the right time as i finish my exams and have time to enjoy stories and sew some pouches :)
Found another older true crime channel 2 add to my bedtime list, going on the list with BRIEFCASE and Deadly Women. Thank you 4 being such a wonderful story teller few people have gift of storytelling anymore

I absolutely ADORE Cape May! 🙂❤👻🦇🧛♀️🙂
Enjoyable and educational. Thank you...
I absolutely loved watching this it’s really good and the way the stories are told is so well done you don’t want to move until the video is finished. I love listening to history and learning about the past . Thank you so much by far one of my favourite channels ❤️🥰❤️
Thank you for that wonderful hour. It’s a pleasure to listen to your voice. Very relaxing, even when you are talking about the most horrific crimes.
I don’t know how or WHY I haven’t found your channel until today but maaaaannnn am I glad it was recommended to me ❤️
You have a follower, my friend.
I absolutely love your style and manner of presentation. I look forward to listening.
With love- a new sub from Texas.
Does that make him a mass murderer then?
@@omniexistus more like a grifter/con artist/psychopath. Mass murder is killing a bunch of people at once.
@@janetpendlebury6808 no. Serial killers are motivated differently than Holmes was.
Amazing storytelling I listen to you often
