    Your anti-RTK comment is what I’ve been saying since the finale - PTG is saying that they don’t need a popularity-vote crown, because they believe in themselves. They know that they are kings; they make and put on the crown themselves. It was an F U to RTK because they knew they weren’t going to win, but it’s also a powerful song about knowing your worth and not giving up.

    • @ankomitarashi-488
      @ankomitarashi-488 4 ปีที่แล้ว +103

      Right? I was so disappointed with rtk 'cause what could have been a great competition turned into a popularity vote and the only thing that really seemed to matter during the show was who had the most eye-catching performance.

      @eternalptgmx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      @@ankomitarashi-488 It kind of turned into a dance competition, it was weird. They (mnet) didn't put any effort into requiring a ballad round, nor in giving them specific tasks (other than covers). There should have been themes (retro throwback), ballad, breakup song, love song, etc. mnet was just like "here's some groups doing random stuff" and idk compared to the comps we have in the USA it seems lame and unorganized.

    • @ankomitarashi-488

      GhibliAndDreams I totally agree. And they said they chose groups that had talents in contributing to their own work (composing, lyrics, choreo, etc) but didn't require that at all, so like what was the point?

    • @KathrynOliver_1321
      @KathrynOliver_1321 4 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      AnkoMitarashi - I would like to add to this comment: idk how involved the other groups were with the song arrangements and choreography, but I kept seeing that PTG were HEAVILY involved with the choreography, concept, and song arrangements. Like, PTG did complete remixes of all the songs, even their own song Shine+Spring Snow. The only original track they made IN LESS THAN A WEEK was Basquiat. I know people have different taste, but I mean come on... it was frustrating to see a group that have A-grade work get C’s...

    Pentagon is a group that went through a lot, either with CUBE or overall. They are group that is clearly really respected by other younger groups, but never appreciated by the public. Even their biggest hit and one of the most popular songs of 2018 - Shine - didn't give them the popularity. If you take a closer look on them, their potential is still neverending, from self-producing their tracks, to making the choreo, they have in my opinion the best singers (Jinho & Hui), rappers that compliment each other and overall extreme ability to perform well in every style they choose.
    I wish the public would see what we see in them.
    Watching the show from the start, I knew Pentagon no matter how incredible they are won't win over the popularity that for example The Boyz had. I deeply respect how they managed to develop despite their struggles.
    Basquiat is truly not only a song, but a whole experience.

    • @charlottepage7085

      Pentagon are criminally overlooked.Hui is a great producer and like you said him and Jinho are some of the best vocalists in the industry.I also have to add Kino as a stand out.He is such a captivating performer.
      I watched RTK because of them hoping they will win but along the way every group managed to impress me and I would have accepted any of them as the winner.

      But honestly if it was a popularity contest, I don't think ONF would have ended up second place, and wouldn't Pentagon be at least 2nd place? Anyways, they never lacked talent or chemistry, all they lacked was good timing and better opportunities to make them shine. They gained a lot of fans through RTK, and I'm sure that will be reflected in their next comeback :))

    • @ankomitarashi-488
      @ankomitarashi-488 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Madeline Liu onf has been consistently gaining popularity since we must love Era. Had more fans going to see them at music shows towards the end of their promotions than they did at the beginning of their comebacks. And since they were one of the lesser known groups people had less of an expectation of them as they did with ptg. Onf also showed ton of charisma and personality throughout the show while continuing to stay super active on sns throughout. =]
      That being said, Pentagon was actually 2nd in the final voting within Korea still.

    • @madeline686
      @madeline686 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@ankomitarashi-488 Yup, I consider myself a Unifuse (I ult ONF) so I know their position. I do love how ONF gained more fans since WML, and I love how they get so much support from domestic loyal fans. But honesty, judging based on album sales (which is a good indicator of fandom size), ONF even sold less albums with Why than TOO did with their debut album (which quite surprising, esp as TOO only debuted this year). I'm very glad that ONF's album sales improved so much this comeback.
      and about expectations, I totally agree with you. I think that was the main factors as to why PTG's audience votes were relatively low. MNET portrayed Pentagon as cold, powerful, scary, etc, and I think that may have gave them a burden. That's the power of MNET and media T.T
      Oh yeah, I forgot about how PTG was second on live voting. I think ONF won overall second because they charted better (their charting has always been decent).

    To me, Hui struggled a lot between creating the music he wanted to create and creating something that would please the general public and make Pentagon popular. I think during RTK the members and him finally understood a little bit better what kind of sound they wanted to make and Hui also decided that he should focus on creating music that pleases them, Pentagon, because if they do that their fandom will still support them anyway. Basquiat was also an artist known for trying to craft a unique style and finding new ways of self-expression, maybe Hui is implying that he also wants to be this kind of artist. But again, that is just my feelings on it.

      @YingYingZhangx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yes, i completely agree with you on this as well! Especially in modern times when society seems to say that popularity and awards are what matters to achieve external validation, but in reality you have to start with knowing your true self first or else it'll never be enough.

      @@timob1681 Honestly why is lipsynch even allowed to begin with in a competition? It's deceptive as hell. Most people wouldn't even able to differentiate lipsynch from live and thus these groups get credit for 'perfect vocals' when they didn't even sing. The focus of RTK is solely just "who can put on the best stunts and theatrics". Groups that actually tried to win through vocals got destroyed.

    It's not just about anti-RTK or anti-Mnet. They explained it when they released the audio that the song is about going against oppression while using the life of artist Basquiat as inspiration for the song. The crown is also a reference to Basquiat's crown, which may mean acknowledging one's self as the king and not letting others to define him/her.

    I just had a brain explosion about this the other day- Basquiat as an artist was really well known for this specific crown symbol in his art (I've actually seen it before without realizing what it was!), so it makes a lot of sense that he specifically was an inspiration for Hui on this show. If you look it up it's like this sort of sketchy, graffiti, almost cartoon-y style crown. Very different from the crown imagery elsewhere on RTK! Thinking about that with the "I make and put on the crown myself" part... it really is the perfect imagery/symbolism to convey the feelings of this video and this struggle they went through. Props to PTG and Hui!

    I would have liked to have seen Baquiat as a comeback as well so maybe it would have received more attention. This song is so powerful. Pentagon delivered on performance for sure and the message, at least what I took from it, is meaningful on many levels. Certainly it could apply on a personal level, it could be commentary on the Kpop culture, or be about how societies value things in general. I picked up more on the commentary on Kpop culture especially around awards. It seems Pentagon is offering an alternative way for fans to relate to artists by relieving this insane pressure to collect awards - especially in a system that is not well-designed for everyone in the first place. I participate in it, but I also see the deep levels of dissatisfaction that set in when we are inadvertently serving the system more than showing appreciation (as we intend) for the idols. I feel like some of the things fans do to themselves and others in pursuit of these "goals," that are rarely satisfied, if it was outside of Kpop culture would be upsetting to many people. It seems to me like Pentagon is saying, we don't want that, we would rather hear from you, we know now who are, we accept who we are, and we're going to do our thing. Don't doubt. That attitude can be liberating.

    I remember in RTK, I think it was in their Follow by Monsta X performance when they ranked third. They only ranked low because of the respective groups fan votes. While they ranked first voted by the other idols so the other groups were really surprised they ranked third for it. RTK just did every group dirty of what could they really have showcase as a group.
    Pentagon saying they put the crown themselves is so meaningful. Having the other groups in RTK respect and look up to them is already a win for me.

    I only fully caught onto the meaning of Basquiat after I watched the Perf. video, it just made me focus more on what they are trying to convey. You are right that the acting of Pentagon members is great in this song and I love it.
    I hate when people dish S. Korean releases that go deep and stray from catchy, funky, easygoing style that we label as K-pop. Is it so wrong to accept - this is music and music can be light, fluffy, dark, meaningful or even brutally, depressingly honest.

      @@aeye9772 Hah, fluffy, youthfully positive is just not me, for most part. Coming form rock roots I love the direction Pentagon is going in with their style :D But let's be honest - they will not gain great popularity with this. Korean's seem to be against anything too close to harder rock influences in popular music. Even if it's a great, catchy pop song like A.C.E's Goblin, not looking far. It doesn't seem that this literal bop is gaining the attention I personally think the song deserves.

      @ihatesocialmediabutlovemon4278 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aeye9772 Kinda is an operative word for me with Day6. They are pop-rock. I love how people put any band that plays instruments (even when it's simply pop or at best indie) as rock and we have Dreamcatcher that puts a lot of rock in their songs but the girls are a girl group and somehow don't make the cut in any of 'Korean groups playing rock' lists that I came across on TH-cam, LOL
      Pentagon seems to have come to terms with being underrated and they can own it with Basquiat so lets just keep showing love and support!

      @@ihatesocialmediabutlovemon4278 well, that is why I called it 'kinda rock'. Pentagon has been leaning into rock lately since Hui is most productive song writer among them, idk when he sleeps. Also Hui did a rockish cover of Dalla Dalla and all.
