I'm very glad you mentioned the whole situation with P. Mauriat. That is exactly what I have noticed over time. P Mauriat seems to be sitting out new models that people praise highly, whereas Cannonball really has two main lines
I bought a used Mad Meg. Like the sound, plays great. How ever there are issues with the metal being soft and more trips to my tech and the point or pivot screws are not the Selmer, or Yanagisawa or Yamaha type and can only be tightened to a certain degree . This results in a major swedging overhaul after a short period of time depending on how many hours one plays the horn. The same with my Mauriat, which i had completely redone with the proper screws and the recievers modified. It is expensive. But then I do not need to visit the tech every three months. Love the sound of both horns, but...... I play Yanagisawa now and they are problem free mechanically. My tenor is aTW020 Bronze un-lacquered and the sound is up to you- flexible. Wish i had gotten it with the clear lacquer for the same reasons you site. I certainly appreciate your insights.
Love what you're doing with the blue screen, maybe try an angle where you're sitting off to the side of it so I can see more of the other videos and pictures you're laying in. Maybe not. Just a thought. Beautiful horn and beautiful playing as always, you're a tremendously engaging and very humble sax personality on youtube.
I'm intrigued by Cannonball horns. Lovely finishes but we don't see many in The UK. My Tenor is an '82 Yanagisawa. I am thinking about a new Tenor. I love the black and gold Yamaha 875.
Yamaha 875EX tenor is a great horn, my favorite modern horn I've come across. I've played someone's Cannonball tenor who was looking to upgrade and he was interested in my Reference 54 I was selling and comparing it to a Mark VI he had on trial (the VI won). I didn't like his old Cannonball at all. It couldn't subtone well and I didn't care for the tone. I've tried and old Yani T-880 and I like it much more. All personal preference though I'm not hating on anyone's horns. My favorite horn (Tenor) for tone is a 1936 Series I Buescher Aristocrat, and I have bought/sold/owned over 20+ tenors over the years. The Buescher has killed 6 Mark VI's, 2 SBA's, a full pearls King Super 20, Selmer Reference 54, Selmer Series III, 2 Yamaha 875EX's, and more. It easily has the best tone, but not the best keywork/playability. SBA is my main horn, but the Buescher is never getting sold.
Im in the U.K and have a like new Vintage reborn going on sale plays perfectly easy low register. Message me through Sax on the Web forum on the same username .
I played an old Buescher one time and that thing was the loudest sax I'd ever played before and since then. I think it was pre 1950's. WOW!! I always wanted one if I start a collection
Thanks man for sharing this! I have a similar horn, the Pete Cristlieb model of the Vintage Reborn Cannonball tenor sax. The first cannonball I had was an alto raven model. I do like their horns but I am always interested in what is happening in terms of actual innovation around the saxophone. I like to keep track of companies that make the instrument and playing the instrument better, over some of the more gimmick-y type things we see some companies doing. I think for me making the horn more comfortable and light is very important while not loosing any of the sound. I always like simpler designs around the saxophone so that there are less trips to the repair shop, as it seems quality repair shops are hard to come by for a lot of people. I'd love to see more reviews of horns and gear as you get to check them out. Thanks again for all of the info on your channel!!!
I bought a used P Mauriat alto this year. A lovely horn but I'm not comfortable with the left hand pinky keys. I may be in the market for a Bari but the P Mauriat is more expensive than a Yani and I can't help believing the Yani would hold it's value better.
Cool. Appreciate your reviews. Yes the Vintage Reborns except for the first line have always had that orange pleather Mark VI styled case. Slightly different throughout the years. I used to schlep horns for Sam Ash in San San Antonio. I have a Alto VR and it has that same case you show. From the factory I found the Altos tend to have higher action than I prefer so I lowered it. Feels great. Love the tone and the projection
I have never played a Cannonball, but the engraving is appealing, although it's really 'icing on the cake'. I like the sound of Selmer saxophones, especially the Mark VI.
Got to play a VR tenor at a music store and have to say it was nice. Played better than others I have had a chance to play, and this could be due to set up. Unless you are at a real sax shop, the standard stores may not check the set up? That plays into your perception of how it plays I would think. Sounded nice, key lay out was nice. Ended up with a Yanagisawa TWO 2 for all the reasons stated in this video, for me. Horns are personal and the one that's best for me may not be for you. Lots of good choices now, it's getting to try one out that is still a problem in this big country where music stores die out or get taken over by the big guys.
Just picked up my Cannonball Big Bell tenor hotspur from the tech today. Had the tone holes leveled and all pads replaced with black kangaroo leather pads and stainless steel resonators. He also cleaned it top to bottom, inside and out. Plays like new. It blares, definitely edgy and bold. Exactly what I want out of my tenor. I pull out the old Yamaha 61 alto when I want to be polite.
Hi Sir, thanks for the CB info: early on, I was using a CB 5* rubber mpc on a jupiter tenor, but these days I use a Vandoren T75 V16 or my Otto Link STM 7* on my yamaha YTS-62ii. Btw, I STILL use a CB 5 on my jupiter 869 silver alto🤣. I was considering getting into a CB alto, rather than overhaul the 2001 jupiter, but then I was considering replacing it with an allora soprano, but you convinced me to keep playing the alto. Since I'm kinda lazy, it was an easy sell lol
I've never been a huge cannonball fan, but I tried a vintage reborn last year and really liked it. It's definitely got the most "regular" sound of all the cannonballs, if that makes any sense.
The Otto link mouthpiece you have what is the facing number. I have the 1st metal mouthpiece for tenor that Otto link made the Master Link facing 5 which is very open . I love it
Nice engraving designs that Cannonball has. The Allora Chicago tenor has a big bell. P. Mauriat has the System 76. From soprano to tenor, these saxophones have a large bore and bell.
Hey, I’m Kiyle. I purchased a Cannonball BBSS Brute Tenor with the hummingbird engraving on the bell. It seems like ever since I bought it, I’ve had nothing but issue with it. I ended up having them just order a brand new one and ship it to the store. I brought it home, opened the case to show my dad and two stones fell off. One day I was practicing and I could feel several leaks, the octave key in both necks and D1& E1. So, I took it back and they special ordered the same exact one. It came in about two months later, and yet again I’m having issues with the octave keys, and there are some slightly torn pads. I take very, very good care of my horns. Why does it seem like they sound so great and they’re beautiful, but they seem like they constantly have to be fixed or tinkered with?
I haven't had issues with mine. Keep in mind though, I don't have the stone series. I moved away from them about 10 years ago. Not because of any QC issues though. Mostly because I was just looking for something more traditional.
I ended up picking up a tenor vintage reborn brute. Ill play this horn until I no longer draw breath. Cannonball themselves told me on the phone to clean the brutes with lemon Pledge sprayed on a cloth. I used to wash my pet lamb with Woolite, so lemon Pledge isn't that much of a stretch for me lol
I just picked up a 1966 king zephyr tenor, my first saxophone. Had it refurbish, and it basically plays by itself with a big fat sound. I thought about the cannonball for later. How would they compare against each other?
Good evening how arr you. Did you ever replace your Cannonball reborn. I feel you should get another cannonball , the Yanagasawa Two with under sling octive key. I like the sound of the cannon n the yani . Elon trotman has a good cannon hes on u tube.

So, through a friend of a friend I'm finally getting a practically new in the box, Japanese made, Yamaha alto sax and for less than a brand new Jean Paul, lol I'm a ways out from developing a good enough tone, but, a couple videos ago, you was talking about how the different brands have their own sound, so now I'm wondering how would you describe the Yamaha sound? Also, why do you personally prefer Cannonball over it?
I found that the Yamaha saxes have a brightness in the upper register that can be really useful under the right conditions but not all the time for me. I might be moving away from Cannonball in the future though so I haven't really decided on what I'll get next
I'm somewhat new to this and plan on going to college for music. I mainly play tenor and want to buy a nice one for myself. What would you say about getting this model as a guest higher end one? I've tried it before but it was a soprano not a tenor

The stock soprano mouthpiece that comes with their sopranos is my all- time favorite soprano mouthpiece. You might want to consider the Yamaha 62 III. I'd like to get the silver plated one or if I can, the Yany TWO30
