So I watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on Sunday, and this scene reached forth and delivered unto me an uppercut right in the feels. I cannot explain why this powerful moment previously passed me by. It’s not too difficult to understand why it tugged on the feels. This scene embodies one of the most beautiful aspects of human nature. You would be hard pressed to find a time in this extensive story where things feel more lost and hopeless. They are alone, they have no plan, and so many people are dead.. Despite this, Harry and Hermione share this small moment. A sliver of magic in a rapidly darkening world. Our ability to endure overwhelming odds and global horror, and to somehow forge a beam of light in spite of the looming shadows is testament to our courage and ingenuity as a species. Indeed, to ‘rage against the dying of the light.’ So, before you point out the fact that Harry Potter is pure fiction, I would like to mention that this is the exact point I am trying to make. These virtues I have mentioned are so powerful and moving that we have immortalised them in our art since the dawn of our history. These songs, paintings, books and movies, despite being fiction, affect us so deeply because they are 100% relatable. This is what we are. We are fighters and survivors. We believe in self-sacrifice for the greater good. We believe in seeking joy wherever it can be found. We are the sum of our stories. You can look back into the history of any culture upon the Earth, and you will find these virtuous tales. As a species, we are romantics. Our stories are proof of this, and we have incredible stories.
Call me optimistic, but I still believe we can do this. I still believe in us, but we are running out of time. When we arrive upon the brink, I hope we can take a moment to dance like Harry and Hermione, and if we cannot, then I fear we won’t be fighting for anything worthwhile.
Our children grow upon the tales. In this modern world, we need to teach them to dance, and we also need to point out the shadows, and show them how we dance despite their existence. We need the right stories.
We are cutting it fine, but like all great fiction, if we pull it off, it will make for one hell of a story…
“We're older now, the light is dim
And you are only just beginning
    O children
We have the answer to all your fears
    It's short, it's simple, it's crystal clear
It's round about and it's somewhere here
    Lost amongst our winnings”
“Hey, little train, wait for me
I once was blind, but now I see
Have you left a seat for me?
Is that such a stretch of the imagination?"
"Hey little train, wait for me
I was held in chains, but now I'm free
I'm hanging in there, don't you see?
    In this process of elimination.”

I think he'd be happy being compared to such a legend. BC he too is a musical genius. I hope he got to meet Leonard Cohen...who's no longer with us now.
This song is chill inducing. And that voice...He can definitely SING better then cohen or pink Floyd.
Using children in songs usually works beautifully like it does here. CHILLS.

@@libertyjo6238 "the man playing the violin" ? Warren Ellis has been Nick's equal in the music they produce for over 20 years! He was awe inspiring as the front man of the Dirty Three in his pre-Bad Seeds days, I still have fond memories seeing him tear it up at a local pub gig in Melbourne circa 1998. Incredible musician and artist. I credit him for the amazing "second act" (after Blixa and Mick left the band) in Nick's journey with the Bad Seeds.

I think it's hilarious when singers forget the lyrics to a song. People need to remember, these singers don't go home and play the CD 500 times on repeat like we do as rabid fans. After 10 or 20 years, it doesn't surprise me that a singer sang verse 3 before verse 2. Especially considering he was probably staring at a chick who flashed her tits at that moment. It does happen. My favorite incident with Nick is when he plays The Curse of Millhaven in concert. He has a roadie on stage with him holding poster board with the song lyrics written upon it. The song is long so it requires several boards. What makes it so awesome is Nick still forgets the lyrics. LOL! Nick gets flustered early in the song and sings, "...last Christmas little fuckin' Bill Blake's little boy...whatever...they found him the next week..." Its so funny how he waves his hand dismissively, like whatever, who cares, I'm moving on. He adds a few more F-Bombs into this song too. A great performance. I highly suggest it as the song is awesome to begin with. Someone named PlacentaJuan uploaded the video.

I take it to be about any form of totalitarianism.
"We have the answer to all your fears
      It's short, it's simple, it's crystal clear
It's round about and it's somewhere here
      Lost amongst our winnings."
Anyone promising the answer to everything and saying it is simple is to be mistrusted, they are more interested in the winnings and the power that comes their way. When we find that answer like old Jim does in the song we remember that every time this promise has been made, and we have given power to those who have promised us all encompassing simple solutions, we have opened the door to mass murder. Whether it is Nazi Germany, Communist Russia, China, North Korea... I take this song to be about a generation realising too late that they have set themselves on the path to this destination, looking at their children and finally understanding the future they have ushered in for them. 'We're all weeping now, weeping because there's nothing we can do to protect you' indeed.
This song is a warning. You are right to cry.

    LYRİCS
Pass me that lovely little gun
    My dear, my darling one
The cleaners are coming, one by one
You don’t even want to let them start
They are knocking now upon your door
They measure the room, they know the score
They’re mopping up the butcher’s floor
    Of your broken little hearts
    O children
Forgive us now for what we’ve done
It started out as a bit of fun
Here, take these before we run away
    The keys to the gulag
    O children
Lift up your voice, lift up your voice
    Children
    Rejoice, rejoice
Here comes Frank and poor old Jim
They’re gathering around with all my friends
We’re older now, the light is dim
And you are only just beginning
    O children
We have the answer to all your fears
    It’s short, it’s simple, it’s crystal clear
    It’s roundabout, it’s somewhere here
    Lost amongst our winnings
    O children
Lift up your voice, lift up your voice
    Children
    Rejoice, rejoice
The cleaners have done their job on you
They’re hip to it, man, they’re in the groove
They’ve hosed you down, you’re good as new
They’re lining up to inspect you
    O children
Poor old Jim’s white as a ghost
He’s found the answer that was lost
We’re all weeping now, weeping because
There ain’t nothing we can do to protect you
    O children
Lift up your voice, lift up your voice
    Children
    Rejoice, rejoice
Hey, little train! We are all jumping on
The train that goes to the Kingdom
We’re happy, Ma, we’re having fun
And the train ain’t even left the station
Hey, little train! Wait for me!
I once was blind but now I see
Have you left a seat for me?
Is that such a stretch of the imagination?
Hey, little train! Wait for me!
I was held in chains but now I’m free
I’m hanging in there, don’t you see
    In this process of elimination
Hey, little train! We are all jumping on
The train that goes to the Kingdom
We’re happy, Ma, we’re having fun
    It’s beyond my wildest expectation
Hey, little train! We are all jumping on
The train that goes to the Kingdom
We’re happy, Ma, we’re having fun
And the train ain’t even left the station
