That fireman should be "On the busses " with Reg Varney, and olive . Love the vid , real characters full of life and enthusiasm .

A great video clip of a wonderful place to be. Back in the 1990s some friends invited me to join them for a week's holiday in a rented house in Goathland. I didn't know what to expect and I'd never been in N Yorks before. I fell in love with it immediately. All you could hear was the bleating of sheep, a light aircraft flying overhead and the sound of a steam engine puffing up the bank nearby. Our house was right by the bridge over the line there. It was as if our car had turned into a time machine and taken us back 60 years. In those days the line terminated at Grosmont so it's good to see they've extended the run now to Whitby. Long live the North Yorkshire Moors Railway !
Oh yes, I like the music backing here too. Well done that Wanderer !

As always, an excellent programme and one I've visited, and travelled on many times.
I'm a former steam loco driver working on the Bo’ness & Kinneil Railway in Scotland, and remember one holiday in North Yorkshire when I was based in Pickering.
I’d mentioned to the footplate crew that I was a driver while in conversation with them; they asked me where was I staying?
I replied Pickering and I was getting the train back… to my delight, they said ‘hop on!’
I ended up travelling from Grosmont to Pickering on the footplate with them… it was wonderful especially the climb up to Goathland.
At the end of the journey, I gave them some money for a pint and thought I’d given them a tenner but that evening, when I went to the pub ( not the same pub), I discovered I’d given them a £20 note!
That would have kept them in a few beers that night and they must have been surprised at what I gave them, it was worth it though… 🚂

Thank you for sharing this video. I went on the NYMR last week with my dad and I really enjoyed it. Although I’m female, I love steam trains and you just can’t beat the sound of a steam locomotive chug chug chugging along. This video has given me an insight into what the footplate ride entails as I’m very much thinking about having that once in a lifetime experience for myself 😊

Seeing all the inner workings of how these great trains operate along with the sounds, the sights, the jolly fireman, the pheasants practically racing the locomotive, this is just one of the best train videos I've ever seen. What a treat. Kudos.

My dad was the fireman on the hull to Withernsea line back in the late fifties/sixties, on one of his first outings he fell asleep due to the warmth, and rhythm of the train, and the driver had to shovel some coal, he forgive him, due to some of the long shifts, and just me being his first born keeping him awake the night before. tiring, but happy days, as always Andrew nice vid, good health.

Many thanks for sharing the video, it was a joy to watch! When I was about 7, we visited Didcot railway museum (1987 or so) and unbeknown to my brother and myself, my dad had arranged for us to go one way each on the footplate, along the line. We found the "footplate pas" for each of us when going through things after father passed away 2 years ago. Very fond memories, and this video really made me quite emotional. Thank you 😊👍

A huge thank you for this video. I have shared it with all my family as the NYMR was a huge part of my life from the 70’s. I used to visit each year with my father (ex. LMS man ) who retired early then became a fireman/driver for many years until he died in 2002. The last time I fired (passed cleaner) on the railway was on 80135 on my Dad’s funeral train. Eric (the black 5 ) was my Dad’s favourite engine and I remember George (Stephenson) another black 5. Life took over so I’ve not worked on the NYMR since that last turn in 2002 but I have since driven and fired on the main line but not for 15 years. Life just takes over and runs away with time sadly.
Thanks for all the happy memories.

I saw your video on the KWVR (excellent video), so that is what led me to this one. (I had never ridden the KWVR, but I HAD ridden the NYMR (25 years ago), so I thought I’d see how you treated a railroad that I was familiar with. Your video was excellent! (When I rode the NYMR, I rode the train from Pickering to Goatland, and walked from there to Grossmont (that was as far as steam went, back then), rode the train back, requesting Newtondale Halt. I walked from there, back to Levisham and caught the train from there back to Pickering, quite a nice mix of railfan-ing, and nature hiking)

    (Jórvík Vestr þriðjungr)
Ek bjó fyrst á þorir. Did you know that Yorkshire dialect was heavily influenced by old East Norse, for example "Ey Up" in Sweden is "Sey upp" and it actually means "look up" in both Sweden and in Yorkshire Dialect (Though most on Yorkshire think it means "Hello")

I liked your production. It is very difficult to create long form content and sense that you found that. However, the production moves well and I really liked the focus on the crew and the interview with Alan.
I am a very big fan of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and I would like to get there more often. When I have been there the experience is wonderful. However, the distance from home is a bit difficult for me.
Through your excellent production I have been able to enjoy the NYMR from afar.

Cheers Mike 👍🏼 The challenge was trying to strike the right balance between the interior & exterior shots as we went along, and keep the story moving. It’s watching it through the audience’s eyes that’s sometimes the trickiest bit. Doing this channel has taught me not to be precious about what I’ve shot. When I laid out all the useable footage onto the timeline before starting to edit it was at 1hr 50mins, so a lot went!

I stumbled upon this somehow and just loved every minute. The steam engine with billowing clouds of smoke and the sound, beautiful English countryside and the two very lively good humoured volunteer fireman and driver, Alan and Mike. They must have so much vast knowledge between them which is well worth passing on.
I do hope that this knowledge can be passed on to other younger volunteers so that the pleasure of steam engines can never be lost. Thank you for this lovely video, I only wish that some day I could be on this steam engine, but at least I have experienced it second hand and that makes me happy.

brought back memories of a trip i had on the footplate of B1 61264 from Pickering to

think it cost around £350. It probably is a lot more now but an experience to remember.

Fascinating video as ever Andrew . Have to say very envious , must have a been a great day . The NYMR is without doubt one of the most picturesque lines in the country . With the bonus of Fish and Chips in Whitby if you get the chance too .

Cheers! One of the few times I’ve been to Whitby and not been to a chippy!

We holidayed near Scarborough last year going to whitby, Goathland and surrounding areas and loved it. Unfortunately we never got to Grosmont. After watching your videos we've booked a lodge at Beck hole for August. Cheers 🍻

Ah that’s brilliant! Birch Hall Inn beer garden in August for a sarnie & pint - no better place 👍🏼🍻 (roll on summer!)

@@NorthYorkshireWanderer I've just looked where the inn is. 10 minutes walk from where we are staying. We are booked into the lodges behind TMC The model centre 😀
