      nuwandalton I'm a Steffi Graf fan, she is my age. However Serena at her peak plays at a level Steffi and Martina have never reached. If Steffi had a hard time dealing with Monica Seles from the baseline with her angles and power. How would she deal with Serena with best serve ever in women tennis, angles and power and a fantastic athlete, which Seles was not. As Billie Jean King says the players are getting better. Martina advanced the game, so did Steffi and Monica, Serena took it too a different level.

      GOAT is a very subjective claim. Martina had to contend with Chris Evert, they are tied in Slam wins. Monica Seles had already eclipsed Graf when she was stabbed. The Williams Sisters played against weaker fields. A problem for the women that gets worse every year.

      @veronikah K- Chris Evert is the GOAT. No one will ever come close to her all time 92.4 winning percentage. Steffi
      and Martina are just merely great.

    • @jerrybrownell3633
      @jerrybrownell3633 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Max E - The difference in their winning percentages( Evert/Graf) is so minimal it isn't even worth debating. Head to head Steffi held a 9-8 advantage but Chris was at the end of her career. Steffi, Martina
      and Chris are the 3 best players ever in my opinion.

    • @jerrybrownell3633
      @jerrybrownell3633 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Max E - I guess it all depends on what source you reference. I used The Official U.S Women's Tennis Association All Time Records website. Whether Steffi was 9-8 or 8-6 against Chris is a moot point. Evert is 10 years older and she held her own against Graf. Thank you for the comments exchange. I enjoyed the battle.

    This was definitely a "passing of the guard" moment - whether Martina realized it or not. Graf's athleticism and leg speed/power was phenomenal!
    It also occurred to me that Martina Navratilova was two points away in the final set to defeat Graf and win the French - 5-3 (15-30) - only to not. Twelve years later, another Martina - Hingis - was two points away from setting herself up to win the French Open on her serve in the final set against Graf - 4-2 (15-30) - only to not.
    Graf had grit.

      No Martina would definitely not felt the least bit afraid of Steffi here. Right here. She would of felt like the dominant player . At this moment. ! Afterwards she may of thought otherwise. Or she might of blamed the day but someone like Martina would believe she could win any March against anyone as would steffi..!

    • @richardross4677
      @richardross4677 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @timothy chung Same age, haha, what planet are you on dude with that shit. 17 year old Navratilova (the age Graf was here) would be CRUSHED by this Graf. Martina at that point was fat, grossly overweight, mentally unstable on court, losing to people like Janet Newburry in slams, making an Australian Open final in a depleted field but losing 6-3, 6-2 to Evonne Goolagong, and years from winning her first slam. Now if you mean 30 year old Graf vs 30 year old Navratilova that would be closer, but on clay atleast Graf probably wins and more likely easier than she did here too. Graf of the 99 French and 99 Wimbledon which was just before turning 30 was probably better than the Graf here who still beat Martina after all. And more importantly 30 year old Graf would not have the disadvantage of being in her first slam final and slam final inexperience which was the main reason this match was so close, as their two previous slow court matches at 86 German Open and 87 Miami Graf won very easily.

    • @richardross4677
      @richardross4677 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Khwairakpam Napoleon And Steffi was 17 here. 17 year old Navratilova was the cheeseburger queen and many years from her first slam win which was not until she turned 21. 17 year old Graf would crush 17 year old Navratilova hard. This particular Navratilova would crush 17 year old 200 pound super slow around court Navratilova hard after all.

    Steffi had a great topspin backhand one hander, which she used much more earlier in her career-but she won so many matches with her dreaded slice backhand-which was deadly---almost like a great changeup in baseball pitching-very underrated

    • @ericagovea2262
      @ericagovea2262 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Agreed her husband Andre Agassi once described her slice as Knife like .........I think it seems weak because it is not hit so hard however many don,t realize how fast it must come to her opponents it also stays very low making you bend those extra few inches . Which gets harder to do as the match goes on and you get tired . She can also use that slice hitting it deep to the baseline keeping her opponent back . A very underrated weapon

    • @gk891
      @gk891 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Indeed. I remember Monica Seles once said that Steffi's backhand never got the credit it deserved in terms of how tough it was. But there was a time where Graf's backhand did become weaker and a bit of a liability. In early 1990, Steffi broke her thumb in a skiing accident and so she took some time off. When she came back during the claycourt season, many noted that she was hitting her backhand much closer to her body than before. This was mentioned by not only Tennis Magazine but also by commentators at the 1990 French Open semifinals in Graf's match against Novotna. It became a short and choppy slice backhand but whenever she tried to add depth to it, it was almost soft and floaty. Plus she was hitting it crosscourt almost all of the time. For example, Graf hit fantastic backhand passing shots against Navratilova in the late 80s but hit very weak passing shots against Sabatini in the early 90s. It wasn't until around early 1995 after missing the Australian Open that Steffi's backhand was showing much better arm extension and she was also hitting down the line more often.
      Please don't get me wrong though, I'm not saying that her backhand issues in the early 90s is the sole reason why Graf had more losses. There were numerous factors at play like Monica Seles' awesome rise and Sabatini's amazing improvement.

      Steffi was the one nervous. She should have won much easier. She destroyed peak Martina 6-3, 6-2 their last match on clay in early 86 when Graf was nowhere near her prime (she wasn't in her prime here but much closer than 86) and even destroyed her on a slow hard court earlier this year. So on this slow court it should have never been close based on their previous 2 slow court matches but it was Graf's first slam final and she badly underperformed. Of course you are the huge Graf hater who stupidly said Seles was a better player than her.

    So much going on in this match. From Martina's point of view, it was an incredibly stressful point in her career. After her retirement she said with hindsight she'd been very burnt out after 1986 but hadn't realised for several years. She hadn't won a tournament at all in 1987 and the pressure was mounting and mounting. Steffi was making her bid for the top and had added to Martina's problems. In this particular match, the wind played a huge factor. Martina always hated playing in the wind whereas Steffi didn't mind it.
    From steffi's point of view, she wasn't in her sharpest form and had really had to fight to win her semi final against Sabatini. This was her first grand slam final and she was not at her very peak. She also had a lot of pressure on her because she hadn't lost a match all year.

  • @michaelbarlow6610
    @michaelbarlow6610 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another interesting thing is that Martina Navratilova played that 1987 French Open (and the remainder of the 1987 tennis season after the French Open) with a disguised Dunlop Max200G graphite midsize racket. Even though the Dunlop logo and cosmetic markings on the racket were painted over on Navratilova's racket, it was blatantly obvious to tennis fans and experts that it was not a Yonex racket that she was contracted to play with, but was actually a Dunlop Max200G racket--the same racket that John McEnroe and Steffi Graf played with during their tennis careers. Dunlop came out with a lighter version of the Dunlop Max200G racket for women, but I would imagine that both Navratilova and Graf played with the regular weight version of that racket.

    • @michaelbarlow6610
      @michaelbarlow6610 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It must also be noted that the Dunlop Max200G racket was actually manufactured by Slazenger, but the parent corporation Dunlop insisted that the racket should have their name on it because Dunlop was a more widely known corporate name back then. Slazenger made the Dunlop Max200G racket originally for John McEnroe.

      Nothing was more heartbreaking though than Martina's 1981 U.S. Open final loss to Tracy Austin, 1-6, 7-6, 7-6, afterwards breaking down in tears as a sympathetic New York crowd showed their appreciation and admiration for her with an extended standing ovation. Ironically, that disappointing loss motivated her afterwards into becoming the most dominant player in tennis history in which she compiled a record of 428-14 between 1982-86 in singles, and was arguably even more dominant in doubles during that same time along with partner Pam Shriver.

    • @lenwelch2195
      @lenwelch2195 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      misina211 yes, I agree, Tracy had no business winning that one. Unfortunately Martina was just going through a strenuous training program and entered open 81 looking fit . Evert wore her out in their SF. Martina came out and played great till middle of the second set and missed forehand volleys because she didn’t have the energy to turn her hip and swing laterally thru the ball. Exhausted Martina guided the ball instead of reacting the way you would if you were not tired. Austin did not have a strenuous. Match until the final ( it’s not Austin’s fault she had nobodies to play ( potter ?????? ) come on. Evert had mandlikova in quarters then Martina in SF . She was ranked number one and should never had had the 5 seed to play in quarters then Martina . When your ranked number one it should be an advantage and play fourth seed in SF . This business of drawing out of a hat the third or fourth seed to go in to upper half of the draw is BS. Evert got screwed. Everts last year end number one was 1981. Austin was never ranked above Chris by ITF that decides who is 1,2,3 at end of year.

      "When Martina does lose its always in a close third set". Hardly, in the 2 Wimbledon finals she lost to Graf she did lose in a 3rd set but was drubbed badly in both sets she lost, particularly the 3rd, barely winning one other set. The 86 French Open final vs Evert was also with Evert winning in very lopsided 2nd and 3rd sets. In the 87 Australian Open final she lost to Hana in straight sets. She was destroyed by Evert in the 88 Australian Open semis, and lost easily to Zvereva in the 88 French, Hanika in the 81 French, Mandlikova in the 81 Wimbledon. And those are just some of the losses when she was in or close to her prime, when we go outside that there are lots of blowouts. She was also badly destroyed in Miami by Graf this very year.

    By today's standards it's always frustrating to see a woman as physically strong as Navratilova with such a weak baseline game. She could have hit a much heavier forehand. However, she grew up at a time when it was pretty near impossible to hit winners from the baseline due to small, wooden racket heads. So it was all about coming to the net. By the time the rackets became more powerful, she was already at her peak, near invincible and didn't need to make changes. By the time Graf and Seles came along, when she really could have done with a bigger baseline game, she was in her 30s and probably felt it was too risky to make big changes to her game when she was slower about the court and only going to play a few more years.

    Martina knew that her time as the ruler was close to end 1987. She still won some, but it was clear Steffi would soon become undisputed. 1988/1989 was all Graf! I remember Martinas emotional moments when she first lost to Graf. It was 1986 in germany in straight 2 sets. It was a big sensation back then - Steffi was 16 years old - and it even made the Tennis boom, started from Boris Becker one year before, in germany bigger. Martina knew Steffi would be her successor.

      @ Ilya Kuryakin. If Henin had had Graf's underspin backhand that would not have made Henin a dominant player. On the other hand, if Graf had had Henin's outstanding topspin backhand, then Graf would unquestionably have been even more dominant than she was during her tennis career! Graf could hit a topspin backhand very well on those relatively rare occasions when she chose to hit a topspin backhand, but she never made the topspin backhand a regular part of her tennis repertoire. And of course, if Henin had had Graf's forehand Henin would have been a dominant player like Graf.

    It is so sad that the men's and women's champions at the French Open no longer receive the championship trophies in the stands at Roland Garros like they used to because of one lunatic named Gunther Parche and what he deplorably did to Monica Seles in the women's tournament in Hamburg, Germany in 1993.

    • @michaelbarlow6610
      @michaelbarlow6610 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ Ilya Kuryakin. Oh yes the reason that they no longer award the championship trophies to the male and female singles winners at the French Open tennis championships in the stands like they used to is because of what that lunatic Gunther Parche did to Monica Seles at the 1993 Hamburg, Germany tournament! French federation tennis officials were not going to take any chances that another lunatic might attempt to repeat what horribly occured at that Hamburg tournament in 1993, so they understandably moved the awards ceremonies onto the court starting with the 1993 French Open tournament.

    • @michaelbarlow6610
      @michaelbarlow6610 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ Ilya Kuryakin. Even if the French Tennis Federation had been considering moving the trophy presentation ceremonies at the French Open Tennis Championships onto the Court Central tennis court from the traditional location of the trophy presentation in the stands prior to the tragedy that happened to Seles at the 1993 Hamburg Germany tournament, that consideration (i.e., to fall in line with the Wimbledon and U.S. Open practice of presenting the male and female singles titles winners and runners-up with their awards on the tennis court) was the secondary reason for their switching the location of the trophy presentation not the primary reason! The primary reason clearly was to reduce the risk of another lunatic like Gunther Parche doing to another player what Parche did to Seles. If anyone believes otherwise, then he or she would believe, as the old expression goes, that "there is a bridge in Brooklyn for sale"!

      Martina was famous for her nerves - she lost a lot of matches, notably at the US Open over the years at least partly because of them (1981 and 1989 finals being two examples). This was also a very stressful time in her career. She said many years later that she was mentally burnt out at the time, but hadn't realised it. She'd also gone all the way through 1987 up until Wimbledon without winning a single tournament
