As a teenager who started lifting at 14 to 16 in highschool, can confirm I was fighting demons as I started originally cus I got bullied for my weight through out the years. So I was like fuck this, and signed up to my local gym. Then pretty much everyone that made fun of my weight, asked to train with me after I had made a year or two of progress, some asked for advice too. When they did train with me they had the same reaction when I was outlifting some adults in my gym. I don’t remember much of my PR’s when I was that young but I do remember dumbbell pressing 40kg for 3 reps, and squatting 110kg for 1 rep at 16.
The problem I see with a lot of teenagers is ego lifting. I’m only 22, and I go to several different gyms, and in almost every single one I see a group of young guys putting on as much weight as they can and completely destroying their form. Hell I used to be like that to, that urge to impress people is strong, and while I typically don’t say anything, my only concern with it is that if their purpose is to grow their muscles, doing that isn’t accomplishing much. There is a time and place for it, sometimes doing cheat reps can help you add more weight onto your actually solid sets, it’s just that I see them doing it so much for every set that it’s disheartening sometimes. Just last night, I was doing the seated decline row machine( the one with the spider grip). I can get 6-7 solid reps with 3 plates on, and typically I feel no need to go heavier than that. Younger guy, about 17 sees me doing this, with his girlfriend, and decides to put on 3 as well, starts hammering it out, using his entire body to pull it up, and from my experience, this means you’re barely targeting your lats at all. Just a shame that many of us, myself in my early lifting years included, cannot learn from the experience of others and start off the right way rather than having to make a substantial change later on. If I could go back and tell myself anything pertaining to my lifting alone, i’d tell myself to take it slow and build a solid foundation that will serve me in my later years, cause i’d probably be a helluva lot better off for it and not have had to suffer so many injuries and set myself back so often
Reading this actually boosts my confidence a bit since I only go with weights I can do 8-12 reps with good form and sometimes with TUT for some reps while I see teenagers my age trying weights with half ROM. Thanks man,
