Hi Peter I really really hope you read this comment We, Salvadoreños, appreciate everything that Bukele is doing for our country. This is the first time in history we stand up for ourselves and are craving for real transformation (not just change) Bukele and his administration has given 97% of the population hope. The opposition will do everything in their power to negate and dismiss everything Bukele is doing. El Salvador is not an easy project for Bitcoin or any other initiatives- but we have to bear that pain and move forward Bukeke is seen as an authoritative president by the 3% because he is removing 40 ++ years of corruption
Bingo. True innovators solve problems that people don’t even realize they have. Just look at the iPhone. No one in 2005 thought they needed such a thing, and now fast forward almost 20yrs and no one can live without it!
My country faced the same problems as El Salvador. We have poverty, corruption, drugs, gangs. We also had a popular president who tried to tackle all that. He was popular with the people but many in power inside and out the country wanted him removed. Difference is that our president was old and could not run again. He made some changes for the good but some wanted to reverse all that. The people choose someone like him to continue his work. Hope Bukele can continue doing good for El Salvador but it is the people who must the good works he started
I know it's popular to be very negative these days but I would love to see the president of El Salvador succeed and surprise the world with this effort.
I'll be honest, I thought Peter was a bit of a blowhard, based on his Twitter persona and the tattooed sleeves etc. But to his credit, he comes across here like a really genuine guy who is doing his best to understand this world, and to make his contribution to help make things better. I really respect that and find it inspiring. Well done, Peter.
Yeah everyone is toxic and an idiot on twitter. It turns you into an annoying terrible human being. Nobody should be allowed to tweet. It causes the worst in people.
Director of Research at Cointelegraph here, thank you Peter for this video. Giving people money to help them get back on their feet will not help fix the roots of the problems that are plaguing El Salvador. The majority of people don’t understand money nor property rights. Giving people power over their money is the best way to empower people and societal changes will take a long time to work. There are no quick fixes to problems in any country. President Bukele fixing the money in the country is the best long term bullet towards fixing the roots of the problems. Anyone complaining either doesn’t understand blockchain and money or wants to grab power from the president.
Who cares if he is a dictator or not? What is the difference between a dictator and a monarch? I live in Liechtenstein where the monarch has real power over the country, and it’s the richest country in Europe per capita, has some of the strongest property rights, almost no crime, good schools, etc. I would rather live in a dictatorship/monarchy with bitcoin and property rights instead of a democracy where the average voter doesn’t have skin in the game, doesn’t understand money or property rights, blindly trusts the government, etc.
100% agree. Hope the next episode deep dives into the social problems as related to monetary policy. Peter did a nice cliff hanger suggesting the problems are deeper than Bitcoin - and Bitcoin can't solve all these problems. The loose end is that FIAT corruption and central control ARE the causes of many, many problems. Money/value/exchange has given us the world we live in because in sound money/value exchange good ideas win. Those countries w/o their own currency, and many countries that have currencies that devalue them by printing for Gov't spending (monopolies), have or are going to fail. Many see monetary/social condition connection as a stretch - but if you look world wide at poverty as related to Gov't/monetary the decay is very uniform based on money/corruption. Also, dictators thrive on central control, which includes the money. Hitler came to power after a massive devaluation of the currency. Great book, "When Money Dies"
I am salvadoran and with all due respect to peter, but he was fooled by the opposition in this country. He interviewed like 5 of them and no government supporter. The opposition in el salvador is about 3% compared to 97% who support the government. The opposition controls the salvadoran media, though. The people you saw at the plaza protesting are people funded by USAID. The Central Bankers in the USA are mad at bukele for the financial inclusion he's giving to his people. They are afraid that other countries might do the same. That is why even though the opposition in el salvador has no credibility among the majority of Salvadorans. The massive amount of money the US and EU donate to the opposition make it seem that bukele oppresses his people and that they represent all salvadorans. When in reality they are the corrupts who governed before bukele and were voted out of office because they were very corrupt. Ask the real salvadorans pete, don't be fooled by the opposition.
As a Salvadoran, I agree with everything you have said. The majority of the International Community is against everything Bukele is doing. The majority of the people of ES, support the current government.
I'm not Salvadoran but agree with you. At the moment I saw LGBT flag there I understood who was in charge for those protests. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
A lot of people who are against the Bitcoinlaw because there are much bigger problems in the country, don't realise that most (maybe all) of there problems are because of their currency. That's the root problem i think. I hope it works out well for them and Bukele gets the benefit of the doubt. Then they are an example for the rest of the world. Bitcoin is hope. Good luck. Thanks Peter for all your good content. Looking out for part 2.
It’s taking me about 3 weeks studying and hours or podcasts and I still struggle to really understand it so I feel for these guys. I think the key thing now is to make it simple to use and at the same time show the young people how BTC aligns with their wokness 🤣
El Salvador is not a country like Spain or France. It has severe, violent-related, problems that cannot be fixed just like problems are fixed in these countries. I love democracy but I also trust Bukele and I’m confident he’s doing his best to build a good future for peaceful El Salvadorans. Good job anyway, Peter.
Love it 🔥 it bitcoin succeeds this will be part of our history and children might watch this film in school to learn about the beginnings of bitcoin adoption.
Great film but... the revisit interview with Bukele was underwhelming to say the least. Rather than focus on the Dictatorship claim generically, why not regurgitate the specific claims that he snuck the Bitcoin bill through the courts there? What gave him the leverage to do this? Why did he feel he needed to do this? I can see that the criticisms are largely misunderstanding what is meant by "requiring merchants to accept Bitcoin" given they aren't being fined for technical limitations and don't have to hold the Bitcoin if they don't want to (convert it instantly to dollars). As a Bitcoiner I would have appreciated more REAL skepticism on these points. That said, I understand that an interview with someone like Bukele is not a completely open conversation. This is true for any president or leader. Still, it felt like more could have been said.
I agree, it was nice to watch, an easily digestible report of the sentiment on both sides. Neither Bukele nor his political opponent were really challenged to formulate strong arguments. Fun to watch but it didn't bring much clarity. A somewhat uneasy feeling remains and if I play devil\s advocate : I imagine the IMF is happy with that.
Great Peter. BTC will not solve every problem the next day. But giving people a financial future it will on the long end run. Other problems will solve itself if you adress the problems by the roots
Hi, I am a listener from South Korea. I truly thank you for making this video. I am still at the very early stage of my life trying to figure out what I can do to the world. This video is extremely valuable in that it makes me realize once again that changes cannot be done at once just by a single person. I believe I also have to recognize my limitations and just go a step forward everyday. Thank you always for your contents!
I like your film, we salvadorans understand that it will take many years to fully embrace bitcoin, it's a work in process, long term, of course there will be people who opposes it for political reasons, two free elections have demonstrated that we all want change and support this president, we know we have many problems that have been accumulating for so many years, it is not going to be easy to solve all of them at once. Personally I like the fact that I can send money to support my relatives over there using the chivo wallet. We hope you keep coming to document what is really happening and also interview both the opposition and the people who support this government.
I loved this film Peter, glad that you are showing people who aren't happy about it. I listened to a podcast on el hilo and they said a lot of people were angry, this is the only other place I have heard that and the first where I have seen them. I hope that everything does go brillliantly with the adoption and that the country thrives but it's also important to document this. Maybe next year you will speak to some of the same people again and we will find out if there opinion has changed having lived the reality.
Excellent film. Seeing the line at the end with their numbers got me choked up. Its awesome to see so many with hope. It sure beats seeing people standing in a line waiting for government handouts. Power to the people of El Salvador!
Amazing. Simply amazing what is happening around the world. Thank you Peter for bringing this information from the ground level to plebs like me. The addiction center alone just tugs at your heart strings and makes me me happy to see just what might be possible in the future. Bitcoin is not the solution for the people of el salvador . But is a powerful tool to liberate the dependency of the central banks that has monopolize the economy
When you sat down with the President, I thought you were going to ask about the lack of eduction on Bitcoin from the locals. I was wondering how or if that would be addressed.
Watching this now after watching your third "Follow the Money" movie. I love watching the human journey you went on making this film. I am early on my journey. Keep up the amazing work Peter.
In a totally unsurprising turn of events, El Salvador is undergoing the same color revolution as most of the rest of the world, especially the US. Same talking points, same tactics, same behavior, same look, just slightly customized to fit different cultures. But TOTALLY organic, I'm sure. And btw, nobody asked the people for their input about fiat, inflation, debt slavery, etc. Funny how the left pretends to care about their voice when it comes to money that largely reduces centralized manipulation. In fairness, however, IF Bukele's gov didn't explain bitcoin very well to the people, I would agree that is a mistake. Bitcoin needs some basic explanation. Whether or not she's telling the truth is a totally different issue.
Thank you for showing the examples in El Salvador. Hopefully there will be a level of acceptance and rebuilding economies of exchange including educational platforms for humanity.
Bloody great job Pete (and crew). I truly appreciate you not sugar coating your experience in El Salvador. If Bitcoin (as an idea) is to truly revolutionize the world the way we think it can, we need to be courageous in recognizing the challenges along the way so we can overcome them as we progress along this incredible journey. Much love from down under.
Great work Peter and team ! Thanks to the Peterson's for planting the seed of belief. The ending to your film brought a tear to my eyes in seeing the flipping and adoption take place. The Bitcoin story is growing with the recent visit from 44 countries to El Salvador to receive the lessons and learning of how to implement an alternative to the current world reserve currency. 2022 is a perfect year for accumulating Bitcoin heading into the future.
Great film Peter, really enjoy your content. I particularly liked the segment of the treatment centre. "courage to change" is part of the recovery process. From what I saw in your film there is a lot of courage in El Salvador in all areas of society from the president all the way to the addicted. Great film and very moving, thank you.
Please make more films like this. Educating the public on Bitcoin should be priority #1 if it's within El Salvador's means. Cash is easier to understand than Bitcoin, especially for older generations and they should not be left behind. This should be discussed more with ideas, and solutions to get the more numerous common people on board with the least amount of friction/fear.
Peter this was excellent. My only quarrel is that you did not represent the concerns of the people over the process of passing the bitcoin bill and the lack of an explanation to El Salvadorans about how this affects them day-to-day. I was on nick carters twitter space the day it passed and he took a lot of time to talk to us and answer our questions. I wonder if he’s done anything remotely close to that for the people. Great work tho, looking forward to #2
It was rolled out very quickly and with little explanation to the people, that is true. But I think Bukele made the right choice opting for expediency over clarity, especially given that there we’re essentially no real downsides to the average citizen. Also, the bill they passed was very short and easy for anyone to understand. It specifically gave carve outs for people who for whatever reason couldn’t use it. they also set up a USD slush fund, so those merchants who did not want to hold BTC could instantly exchange it to USD. To date, I believe about 2M ElSalvadorians have downloaded the the Chivo wallet which is a tremendous amount of adoption in such a short time, and has essentially brought mobile banking services to over 1/3 the population. My understanding is that Bukele making BTC legal tender essentially forced the banks to have integrate it and Lightning into their existing legacy rails, not to mention the big multi national corps like Walmart and McDonald’s. The average person might not see it yet, but just wait five years and ElSalvador could be a very different place. Do not underestimate the impact of economic empowerment in such an economically underprivileged society. Giving BTC to ElSalvador is like giving electricity to an Amazon tribe: it’s a massive step function change, and one that I believe will be for the better. Stay tuned!!!
This should be an annual episodic movie: How is bitcoin doing year over year?
Yes
All love here. Peter wearing the mask 12:00 min in, should also be an annual review. We all could've done better.

Great job Peter & crew. So good to get more of the story, and can't wait to watch an update on how things are going 8 months in
