Great video! FYI for RWD GS350 (2013) the oil filter is on the passenger side (not on the drivers side as shown in the video) and the oil filter is different as well (Part # 04152-YZZA3). The A1 filter that is used in the 4WD is a little longer and comes with the drain plug compared to the A1 filter that doesnt have a drain plug. Hope this helps for others with the RWD car.
Thanks! The car in the video is an AWD version. The dealer told me the oil filters are interchangeable between RWD and AWD cars. I don't know how true that is so do your own due diligence on the matter, but there does seem to be some creditability in the statement. If you look at all the aftermarket oil filters that are available they don’t offer a specific AWD or a RWD filter, but rather a one part number fits both.
The drain plug on the filter doesn't make much sense, and is MESSY, as we can see. I have the rear wheel drive version, and my cover doesn't have a drain plug..As stated, my oil filter is on the passenger side, so I was a bit confused when I saw this video. Otherwise, great instruction video...
I like that Toyota/Lexus actually thought about the oil filter housing and made a special tool with keyed 'teeth' so that you *have* to use it to remove the housing. I remember that my old Mazda 3's housing could be removed with a big adjustable wrench, which would often stress the plastic and cause it to crack and lead to catastrophic failure. I'm about to do my first oil change this weekend on my '19 IS350 AWD. I just need the filter (along with included o rings and the plastic spout tool), 7L of Toyota 0W-20 and a new drain bolt washer?
just bought a 2014, and thanks to you i got the oil changed! whoever the last guy was to put the filter housing on put it way too tight, though. pain in the ass to get it off
Thanks for the video! I bought my wife the same car (dark grayish metallic, same interior color flaxen), and I am doing an oil change this weekend. One good thing you reminded me of that I need that oil filter wrench or a good quality one because I do believe this car was serviced by Lexus and they usually tighten that thing down ass tight. Toyota did the same on my Sequoia (among other things, like bending the metal removable plate under engine) so for that reason I have been doing all the maintenance. I have a cheapy cast tool but I have read some places that if that filter cap is really tight, you can split the tool in half. So I bought a billet aluminum one so I hope that does the trick.
No problem! Don't forget to check out my other video on how to service the rear differential -- its easier than a oil change! Yea, I have had similar problems to when the dealer works on my car. When the dealer did an oil change on my Dodge Ram they forgot to tighten the oil filter, boy did that make a mess! As the saying goes if you want it done right you gotta do it yourself!
For anyone thinking this oil change is difficult just did it for the 1st time couldn't be any simpler one bolt oil is drained and oil filter screws in and out threaded..easy
Being a mobile mechanic I cannot afford mistakes in the driveway so when I drain the oil I let the car off the jack to my low profile drain pan which levels the car and helps to drain more oil than when jacked up. I also do not put the filter plastic covering on until I refill the oil, start the engine and check to make sure the filter housing is not leaking. Then I button it all back up and recheck the dipstick and make any corrections. This is a very good video though. I also use a battery powered angle driver to remove the panel bolts, much faster than a ratchet and less fatigue.
For anyone who had a over tighter oil filter like me, I recommend the Motiv X Tools MX2320. I broke 3 of the cheap ones from auto zone/pepboys. They all snapped in half. The motiv one was able to break loose the filter. Definitely satisfying when you do it yourself and everything goes as planned.
The five minutes running also allows for a leak check that might reveal itself under pressure. Filter canister housing etc... a loose drain plug will or at least reveal itself pretty quickly!
I'm watching this video like "ha, yeah I know how to do an oil change", then Dan whips out the old school paper cartridge and I immediately start questioning my life choices.
You will want to measure what you take out- exactly. Is that what you did? There is no dipstick. How did it look- mileage? I have not changed mine yet 75k. Dealer says not needed. I question that.
Dan....have you thought about the “Race Ramos”. Drive on fairly simple to use and tilts the vehicle back about 15-2 degrees. I use them and not only saves jacking but allows more of a tilt and depending on where the drain pan bolt is, usually allows more of the old dirty oil to drain out. I want to say around $40-50 depending on vendor and what weight capacity you need. I have a SUV and car so the weight capacity of the SUV is well above the actual weight of either vehicle. Just a thought....... Your videos and seeing how reasonably simple some things can be makes me want to get a GS350.
How much oil did you have to add, I'm curious because my local Lexus dealer charges $108 for an oil change @ $8.62per Qrt X 7.86 = $55.02 just for the oil, I'm not sure why they are using 7.8 Qrts??
If it were me, I would purchase a low profile jack in case you purchase car in the future that sits low to the ground. As for the tonnage, that depends on how heavy your cars are. If you want to future proof yourself get the 3 ton jack.
I hear ya! Lots of auto companies are doing that now just to save a couple of pennies. Thank god the oil filter cartridge cap is made of metal instead of cheap plastic (Porsche). Thankfully Lexus still sees value in components that are made of metal instead of plastic. Even the valve covers are made of metal which is pretty uncommon in todays automobiles (sad).
After completing the oil and filter change, a couple of thoughts. I bought a 10 pack of oem filters. It didnt come with the extra little spout and small rubber O ring to drain off filter housing. I just carefully and slowly turned the whole housing and it drained neatly into my pan. Wiped down the excess oil off of the housing before install of the filter cartridge and large O ring, no problem. But the weird thing was how that housing re-installs. The filter element is spring loaded so it was difficult to get the threads started and when turning it it doesnt seem to get tighter as you turn it it just bottoms out and stops. No leaks. Is this the way it is supposed to be?
Hey Dan thanks for the very informative video. Did my 2015 gs f sport and reset all the maintenance data. However it still says maintenance required with exclamation point yellow triangle on the dash. Any ideas?
Does this method applies to 2013 ES300H ? Also, do you recommend OEM o-rings or the ones that came with the filter? I am not sure the aftermarket ones are as good as the OEM o ring to prevent leaks possibility. Thanks
Your ES300H has a different engine than the GS350. You car has a 4 cylinder where as the GS350 is a 6 cylinder so I don't think they will be too similar. Yes the aftermarket o rings are just as good.

Thanks, Dan. I have another question if you don't mind. Currently my maintenance schedule is set to 5K miles. How do I change that to 7K so the maintenance light comes on at 7K and not 5K. I have been looking online without much luck.
+laysiwlong9394 Check your owners manual. It will give you the approved viscosity and weight under the maintenance section. The manual for my 13' GS350 says "0w20 is recommended". Do you live in a warmer climate like California or Arizona?

There's always some idiotic engineer available to complicate a simple process. Just stick with the typical spin on type of filter. No tools required, and the rookies at Jiffy Lube won't have any problem. It's probably some environmental rule, trashing a paper filter leads to less waste. Because it was on sale! :) I think all of the well known brand names are created equal.
Im currently using toyotas 0w20 but its mobil basestock which i find to have high iron wear metals in all uoas ive seen. I used to use pennzoil platinum in my old car, had really good wear metal numbers with it but they changed the formula... i obssess too much about these things
How do you feel about amsoil signature series oil and filters and extended drains?
@@wildcard749 I change my oil so often that all of the oil analysis have been really great, regardless of brand. Are you doing extended drain intervals? I can't comment on Amsoil Signature series as I have never used it. I'm in the camp of change the oil often (I change every 7k) and the car will treat you well.
Yeah ive been doing it every 5k but i have to do 3-4 changes a year, just looking to free up time and use a better oil at the same time
WTF would Lexus make such a complicated oil change? On my 4.0 TACO, the filter is on top of the engine.
how many quarts of oil for my gs350
Bad design on oil filter housing compared to Mercedes.
Why can't Lexus just use the canister oil filter instead of this cartridge type!
Everyone is doing it now. Porsche, BMW, Cadillac, Chevy, etc. It's not all that bad.
Cool, but think I'd rather the experts do this part.
And they charge $115 for that!? Thank you very much, now I'll service it myself.
No problem! Check out my video on how to change your rear differential fluid. This service is easier than an oil change.
I don't bother draining the oil filter housing I just skip right to removing the whole thing with the special tool, you are making a mess either way.
And that small plastic think is too hard to push in and you get oil all over yourself anyway.
Agree. Their process to drain the filter cartridge isn't that good. It's just easier to remove the whole thing.
DIY Dan Is that your car if so what do you think of its reliability? I am considering buying a 2013 with 46,000 miles on it for about $20,000 what are your thoughts ?
@@MannySilva Simply put, it's been the most reliable car we have ever owned!
Not hard but complicated =(
There's always some idiotic engineer available to complicate a simple process. Just stick with the typical spin on type of filter. No tools required, and the rookies at Jiffy Lube won't have any problem. It's probably some environmental rule, trashing a paper filter leads to less waste. At least put the fricking thing on top of the motor, like a Pentastar V-6.
I refuse to buy another Lexus with this kind of crap filter.
