- Altos de Chavon is a recreation of 16th century Mediterranean village nestled atop the Chavon River in La Romana, 1-hour drive from Punta Cana or 2-hour drive from the capital city, Santo Domingo.
This is the cultural center of residents, tourists and artists all over the world. Every detail, architecture and structures were handcrafted by local artists.
It offers a museum, school of design, a 5000-seater amphitheater which hosts performances year-round. It hosted concerts of famous artists such as Elton John, Frank Sinatra, Julio Iglesias, Sting, to name a few.
It also offers sweeping views of Chavon River, a popular location for film productions. Famous movies filmed here are Jurassic Park, Anaconda, Rambo to name a few.
It also features St. Stanislaus church, one of the most beautiful churches in Dominican Republic. It is sculpted entirely in stone which presents a romantic setting for numerous weddings - Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley's being one of them.
Tour to this beautiful attraction is often combined with Saona Island one-day excursion which I highly recommend when visiting Dominican Republic.

I can see why it is a must visit, it looked very nice indeed and I loved the stone buildings but that amphitheatre was on another level. To be honest, I never expected to see one over there and given the heat there, I was surprised at how green everything looked too, cheers Alan
Very cool. The last time I was in the DR was way back in 1982! Lots of changes since then I can only imagine. What I remember most is the friendly people in the small little village I stayed in, La Isabela, well it was not much at that time anyway, but plenty of peace and quiet and empty beaches.
