    Can you use these write offs if you don’t own the business? Let’s say you’re a nurse working for a hospital and you take a nursing/skills course/webinar

      Great question, Alis! If you're a W-2 employee of the hospital, then you wouldn't be able to write off those courses. But if you work there as a 1099 contractor - say, as a travel nurse - then you could take those write-offs.

    Thank you for being concise, brief, and thorough explaining both what does and does not qualify as a tax write off.

    I have an associates, and have a business license/freelance. Going back to college to finish my bachelor’s. How much of the tuition can I write off? Is there a cap? What if I have a student loan? I can’t find this info anywhere!

    Where would I put these write-offs? On the 1040 schedule C? Which Line? Is this considered a Qualified Educational Assistance Plan? or an Employee Benefits Program?

    • @KeeperTax
      @KeeperTax  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi hi! That information will go in Box 27a: "other expenses." The two boxes you mentioned are intended for business owners offering those benefits to employees.
      Here's our Schedule C guide for more info: www.keepertax.com/posts/schedule-c

    Can I write off fees that I have to pay for renewing my nurse license? Can I write off paying for my continuing education classes required to renew nurse license or getting certified for things like OSHA, blood and bio hazard classes, etc.?

    • @KeeperTax

      Hi, Tara! Great questions. As long as you're a self-employed nurse, you can absolutely write off both your licensing fees and all those certifications you mentioned. Thank you for all that you do in taking care of our nation's health!

    Hello and thank you for for this great video. As a Wellness Instructor (cycle, water, strength, triathlon training), I have to maintain my group fitness certification and subscribe to an organization that sells quarterly releases for teaching cycling classes. I also have to take classes form another organization to maintain my group fitness certification. Are these expenses deductible? I also publish TH-cam fitness tip videos for Wellness Center Members. I need to get better so would subscribing to Skillshare be deductible? Sorry for so many questions. Thanks.

      These are great questions! And good news: Everything you've mentioned is deductible as an education expense - your certifications, cycling instructional lesses, and even your Skillshare subscription. They're all related to your current business as a wellness instructor, so you can write them off.

    Hello, thanks for the video. It clarifies a lot, but I have a question. 😊 I am a professional artist. I have to travel abroad to take a course on a specific painting technique to produce my next body of work. I understand that I can deduct the tuition and materials related to the class, but it is unclear what to do about the travel expenses. It is not a work trip, but I need It to improve my business. Would the airfare and Airbnb qualify as business expenses since they wouldn’t qualify as a travel expense? Thank you in advance for any help.

      Hi there! Great question. Because you're traveling for the express purpose of taking a course that will directly improve your ability to produce work, it actually does count as a legitimate business trip! That means your airfare and Airbnb expenses would be deductible. All this is assuming, of course, that the primary purpose of your trip is to take this course!

    Would Botox be considered a write off, if you work in the aesthetics field, because you have to look good? And secondly, why can’t you write off home or car insurance because it’s mandatory?

    • @KeeperTax
      @KeeperTax  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Great questions. Unfortunately, Botox is pretty hard to write off in the eyes of the IRS - more on that here: www.keepertax.com/posts/haircut-tax-deduction
      Home and car insurance are deductible in some cases! You can read more about that in these articles: www.keepertax.com/posts/is-home-insurance-tax-deductible; www.keepertax.com/posts/freelancers-guide-to-writing-off-car-expenses

    What if I am working 1099 as a nurse and pursuing my Doctorate in Nursing, will I be able to write off my tuition for the whole semester?! 🥺

    • @KeeperTax
      @KeeperTax  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! In this situation, you would be able to deduct your tuition, assuming that you aren't getting the degree so you can switch to a different line of work (e.g going from practicing RN to professor of nursing).
      The key here is the fact that you're already working as a nurse. So as long as your doctorate is geared towards helping you do even better nursing work, it's deductible! And you can also write off your textbooks and related expenses.

    What if i work in the medical field as a cna and i get my cma and phlebotomy cert would that be an educational expense

    • @KeeperTax
      @KeeperTax  ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like these new certs will help you improve your job skills as a CNA, in which case they would be deductible! But if you're getting them to establish yourself in a new line of work, they wouldn't be deductible.
      If you'd like to chat with someone about your specific situation, consider giving the Keeper app a try - you'll be able to connect with a tax assistant to ask your questions: keeper.tax/e/AV3d5XS0zmb There's a free trial, so you can see if it works for you before you commit.

    Is this just for degrees?

    • @KeeperTax
      @KeeperTax  ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, you can write off work-related education expenses that don't result in any kind of degree or certification, as long as they're designed to help you do your current job better! That can include things like books, subscriptions to trade journals, and conferences.
