This is one of the best covers of Lauryn's Hill's song I've ever seen. The passion in her voice and delivery is enough to shake you at your core. Beyoncé slayed this song. She made it her own, she didn't try to copy Lauryn Hill version. I felt her conviction and passion. Plus technically the vocals were unmatched. Even Lauryn Hill praised her for this vocal performance( the only opinion that matters)
This is a bit more than a homage to Lauryn -- it's also a way for her to heal through singing. It was after Jay Z had cheated, and the way she tilted her hat right before throwing it into the crowd, was to imitate Jay Z. It's so beautiful that she could transcend from the pain and aftermath of the betrayal through music, hence Lemonade was made!

Whenever Beyonce delivers vocals superior to the original artists of the songs she covers, their fans' only defense is "She got no soul". Soul doesn't define the better singer, and Beyonce is not even a soul artist, but she's one of the best, if no the best vocalists of this generation. Another thing: although Bey ain't a soul artists, she slayed all the Etta James tracks she did for Cadillac Records; Etta's fans of course said "she lacks soul" though.

Beyonce has one of the best running voices but not the best soulful.....which is what I believe people think is missing in this homage to Lauryn..Also the difference with Whitney, Lauryn, Aretha , Adel and other greats is that they don't have to do vocal acrobatics all over the place to get their point across. Another thing: although Bey ain't a soul artists, she slayed all the Etta James tracks she did for Cadillac Records; Etta's fans of course said "she lacks soul" though.
