And the area which you showed first, it's mostly safe if you're self aware of your surroundings... I pass that area even at night around 3am or 4am... But I always avoid picking cash orders 😅
Compared to many neighbourhoods in England, this place isn’t particularly bad. As a woman, I often walk alone at night. It’s peculiar to witness certain things in Portugal, a country considered safer than other European nations. Martim Moniz might seem strange, but it’s rich with history and home to delicious restaurants. During my time there, I noticed some peculiarities that amused me. Not to dismiss your point, but prostitutes and drug users can be found everywhere. For instance, they are all over Marques De Pombal at night, I saw pimps over there too.
Nah, Martim Moniz at night is the equivalent of ,say , Brixton´s McDonald´s at night ...thus ,as you say : "place isn’t particularly bad ". You ignore what you see, it ignores you back.
Don't listen to this. Alfama is the best part of Lisbon. Totally safe. I wandered around by myself...this opinion seems fear based. People are so kind and friendly. Don't be afraid of folks who are poor or prostitues ffs...
My husband and I walked through that area in the daytime while making our way back from the Rossio area up to Alvalade. (yes it was a long walk) We never felt unsafe - however, we could feel an element of desperation that usually comes with making money in unsavory ways.
My friend I agree, I work in food deliveries and also vlog, and I have been attacked with metal rod once and even gypsy kids threw stones while I was driving my moto, but the worst happend in area called Apelaçao, a dude pointed the gun on my neck 😅 last year... My elder brother survived when two goons tried to run him over and left him to die, and police is still investigating, not just that just yesterday one dude was shot in Odivelas area... People don't understand Lisbon, they've the impression that it's safe 😅 while I witness even women with pistols...
FYI we stayed at an AirBnb on R. Possidónio da Silva in Campo Ourique and the whole street was nothing but drug dealers. There was a bit of violence too.
It is where we get our spices both for Indian and for Asian cooking. During the day it is great, but part of this area (behind Tram 28), gets very interesting at night.
We stayed in Alfama and walked through the area in question during the day which looked somewhat sketchy but we never went there at night. Appreciate the tip.
I went for a walk there yesterday midnight with my friend staying there, its a shady area with small cobble stoned streets mostly equipped by Indian sub continent people. There are some other pockets likes this in Lisbon. But this is more noticeable area because its in the historical down town area and under the foot of St. George castle. Litter everywhere on the road and red marks of spitting tobacco chews.
I'm planning a visit to Lisbon in October. I plan on doing a bit of street photography. I will be bringing an expensive camera and lenses with me. I was thinking of trying to get some sunset and night shots around Alfama, particularly from the various view points such as Miradouro da Senhora do Monte. Can you offer any advice about the safety of that area?
We have lived here three years, and during the day and early evenings, that area is fine. It's really when you look at from 9-10pm through the night, that area I circled does have prositution (sometimes you can see "things happening") as you take an Uber or Taxi home. There is drug traffic in that area, not the oregano and sea salt fake drugs being peddled in Rossio Square. We have been to that particular miradoura at night, and that area seems to be pretty crime free. There are many tourists and locals who hang there to watch the sunset and take pics of the cityscape. I would say that you will be fine, but if you venture past 9-10pm into that red circled area, it is sketchy at best. I hope this helps.
Thank you for the information! I am in my 50’s and not looking for any nightlife. I wanted to visit Lisbon. Where do you recommend that I stay in regards to a hotel? I am debating or not to rent a car? I can’t drive a manual car, only automatic. Are the taxis or Ubers safe in the neighborhood?
Don´t rent a car. Waste of money and a the terrible traffic in Lisbon. Use the Metro. I do. Rent a Hotel in Chiado or around Rossio. Easy to walk around from there to see Alfama, Chiado and the center of the city in generel.
We booked an apartment near R da Misecordia/ Large Trindade Coelho. Have you heard anything bad about that area. It is only 13 mintutes walking from the place you mentioned. Just wondering if we should stay somewhere else.
That area will be great. The area I circled is really something at night you should stay away from, unless you are just using a taxi or Uber to get through that part. That is where there is drug activity and prostitution. Where you are staying is right at the heart of the historic area, Barrio Alto, Chiado, Principe Real. There are other places outside the main city center that are also rough, but tourists are not going to those areas. You are staying in a good area.
@@gandsmeyer2957 Before we moved, we stayed near where you are staying, on Rua Garrett, a main street in the Chiado. Although can be crowded with tourists, and did not feel any threats or issues at all. It seems like for whatever reason, the unsavory things happen within that red circle at night in Lisbon.
Joric, planning to visit Lisbon in Sept and then on to Porto. We want to take the high speed train to Porto but don't know where to catch the train to Porto. We are staying at the Hoteis Heritage Lisboa. I can access the link to buy the tickets but they ask from which train station you will be leaving from. Can you help?
We pick up the Alfa Pendular (the high speed) at the Oriente Station in Lisbon. It is in the Park of Nations area near the Aquarium. Get an Uber, Bolt, or Taxi from your hotel to Oriente Station and you will be good to go!
HI, I am planning to go to portugal solo and am trying to plan around my routes to get to the airport etc. If I wanted to take an early flight from the airport, how reliable is the transit to get there? Let's say the flight is around 8am. I'm looking for a safe, fast and cheap option to get to the airport.
Depending on where you are staying in Lisbon, you can get to the airport early morning via Uber, or Bolt, for anywhere from 5-10 euros. Taxis will be 10-15 euros depending on where you are starting from.
I was in Lisbon in February 2001. Very beautiful women, but no luck. Actually all people seemed boring, uninteresting folks. I traveled to a small town named Santarem and almost got mugged by a couple of heroin addicts in the public latrines. That would have been the last straw in a very boring trip. Luckily, I got wind of their intentions and got out in time. Same thing was going to happen in the Spanish city of Caceres outside the hotel where I was staying. Same thing too with the ennui that pervaded the city. I guess traveling by oneself is not the best of ideas. Had in mind meeting a beininha but it was a no go.
I’m from New Orleans and I’m not scared of people because of their color or economic status. However, I don’t wanna pay the same price for a flat that I might pay to be in a nicer area. It’s one thing to be a fearmonger but it’s another thing to give pretty measured information, as this poster has done.
Why do Americans always bring up Chicago or another American city when the subject matter is safety? He is talking about Lisbon. Can you guys stop the self hate?
@@kathywithakayKeep saying that until you get kidnapped and violated. You have no business in a distressed neighborhood trying to virtue signal how loving and understanding you are.
It’s interesting the comments here that are often by foreigners who may live near or frequent the area but are clueless. Most have no understanding of the culture they are living in. I also find it interesting that you didn’t mention that there is not a single Portuguese person in that area anymore. They are all Muslim immigrants, mostly illegal and have taken over the area and operate the same way they did back home. Please don’t try to be so PC and just tell the truth.

There is drug trafficking/sellers everywhere in Lisbon. This looks more like Anjos rather than Alfama
