In The Mood for Alentejo: Part 1 | Underrated Region in Portugal | Evora & Monsaraz

- This is Alentejo, a rural, sparsely populated region in Portugal that's quietly whispered between conversations about Portuguese destinations. Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, all seem to be winning laurels, but Alentejo is winning hearts. It's the largest region in the country, covering about a third of entire mainland Portugal, and offering vast swathes of farmlands, idyllic countryside, from flatlands to rolling hills, from ancient cities to magical, untouched villages overlooking horizons of incredibly vast landscapes.
On the first part of this Alentejo series, I explored the mystical city of Évora, the gateway to the Alto Alentejo (Upper Alentejo), discovering the city's ancient charms, Roman structures, gothic cathedrals and grisly catacombs. And then went beyond the city to explore one of the most breathtaking hilltop villages I've ever seen, the magical Monsaraz, the village near the sky.

I suggest you continue to explore Alentejo, it has great locations to explore.
In Reguengos you can visit the José de Sousa Wine property and cellar, where you can also taste my liquid version - José de Sousa Tinto wine, still done the Roman way, in clay barrels.
In Mourão there’s Adega Velha , a fabulous restaurant.
There is plenty of archeological sites around Pavia , with lots of pre historical dolmens, and in Pavia itself there’s a small church /chapel built in a dolmen.
About 20 Kms from Pavia there’s a big lake /dam - Barragem do Maranhão , exiting Pavia towards Vimieiro you will find it. Worth exploring the fabulous hotel where lots of people stay when they go for canoeing practice close to the hotel - Herdade da Cortesia.
About 30 Kms from Pavia, exiting Pavia towards Mora there’s other fabulous lake / Dam - Barragem de Montargil, with a nice hotel close by as well.
6 Kms from Pavia you find Cabeção, with nice vineyards, a fluviarium ( an aquarium with river fishes) , near a nice river beach and a world wide place for international fishing contests.

Amazing images - and tastes - from Alentejo. You should explore Vila Viçosa, Estremoz, Marvão (another castle on the top of a mountain), the faboulous sea coast, Álcácer do Sal, etc. In Alcáçovas you have de palace (with a beautiful little dream garden) where Portugal and Castille first divided de world.

Wow amazing video, a short, effecient and well shot, Portugal should be thankful for such a great video and the way you show the country.
Just one small correction but more of a technicality. The Azores is actually Portugal biggest regionin term of territorial extension, sure its a autonomous region and i know alot of people dont see it as truly "Portugal", but still is according to Portuguese constitution. Its even bigger then "Mainland" Portugal, you should check it out, and alot of Azoreans came from Alentejo.
And i love how you say portuguese words, most foreign people try to say it in a "spanish" way, which is so wrong, you truly got it. And with this video im hungry and with a huge desire of visting Alentejo.

Your videos are great. I found your video on Douro to share to some friends that are thinking about buying a house in Lisbon. Suddenly, I started seeing one video after another. I know all the places and what took me by surprise was how well you captured the sense of the places. There is a lot of poetry on what you say. A poet is just one person that is able to capture the world in few words... but it is reserved to just a few.
Portugal is a country of poets. Now you understand why you feel well albeit all the limitations that you comes together
