This was maybe the best mic comparison video I've ever seen. Very helpful. I haven't listened to the download, but from this I prefer the flatter sounding AT mic. The DPA seems more hyped in the upper range, and that makes the bleed more apparent. Again, having the multiple acoustic instruments in the video, was really helpful. thank you! And nice playing, btw!

Thanks for a great demo with a variety of instruments. Very thorough and well organized. Both microphones sound good but you can really hear the top end boost of the DPA. Perplexing as one would think for an instrument microphone one would want a flat response. I was trying to decide myself but ended up getting a good deal on a used DPA 4099. I'm using it on guitar and the top end boost is VERY noticeable. I'm going to pick up an ATM350GL and compare them but I suspect I will like it better, as in your video. Thanks again and great playing. Your bass sounds especially beautiful.
Really thanks, it is a GREAT and useful comparation. Althought both mics are amazing devices, I'll chose the DPA. I prefer have to cut a little of high end instead of have to boost those freqs in some cases with the ATM.

The DPA picks up more of the instrument but also more of the back track. That's to be expected. DPA is better but it also costs twice as much as the ATM350 but is not twice as good.
Many thanks for this great review! I do prefere the dpa, as to me It is capable of capturing a wider range of frecuencies, giving a more natural sound of the instrument.

I might be biased as I own a couple, but I preferred the DPA across the board. The DPA seemed to have more clarity in the high end and a more even balance in the mids. Both mics have pretty fantastic isolation, and you got a great tone on the bass, mandolin & guitar. As for the fiddle; well, you're never going to get a great sound mic'ing that close, but that's no fault of yours. Thanks for the demo!

This was an absolutely Wonderful and honest Review, You should get paid for this dear Mathaeus! Audio Technica sounds almost the same as the DPA for 1/3 the actual price. I would keep the Audio Technica, as for the price, is way more functional.

I own the AT Pro35, below in sound signature. The ATM350 sounds with a just top end (highs) gentle roll-off but like the instrument. The DPA4099 sounds with more deep but like the EQ mix.
Although not designed for it. I use it also with my baritone sax as well as my double bass. Thanks for this video. Nice playing.
Cool comparison, excellent setup, well played. Compared to the DPA4099 the ATM350 sounds like you put a blanket over the mic! I know which one I prefer!
You can Ffix it with touch of eq.And with DPA you can here all that background noise.And you cannot eq it out...

The Audio Technicas are fantastic mics for the price. But the open and ultrafine airy resolution of the DPA will make gigantic differences, when playing in Clubs or on big stages on PAs. As a 10 year front of house mixer I'll be candid: if you hear "MINUTE" clarity differences on your headphones, they'll be VERY noticeable and scaled up on a big PA. Especially with slow music: it'll often be the difference of the audience being touched by your music OR NOT/or much less, simply because the mics cannot show the nuance/the emotion of your performance. And I feel as an artist it's frustrating if technology is keeping you back. Disclaimer: If you know yourself to be a rocknroller in a loud 10-piece band? FUDGE IT. Get the ATM350.
Thanks for this terrific demo! I prefer the ATM350 as it seems to reject the background better and sounds every bit as good as the DPA at picking up your instrument. The DPA seems to have a little presence peak built in while the ATM has a flatter response - I wonder if that's why so many of the comments prefer the DPA?

Thanks so much! For my needs right now i prefer the ATM350. It handles spill from other instruments better, and to my ears it is more neutral-sounding than the DPA which can be a bit harsh in the top-end on some sources.

I think with a touch of an eq, they both sound pretty much the same. AT seems a bit flatter, DPA is more "sounded" with a broad 10k boost.

So, I'm impressed with how many instruments you play! You said that you normalized the volume in the recordings. That was a good choice so the element of volume is removed from the comparison. But, I'm interested in which mic is louder given the same pre-amp gain. Which mic produced the stronger output signal?

The audio Technica is much warmer sounding and that's why I use it on my oud and rejects background sound better
Excellent comparison Mathaeus!! I see a Wilson K4 pickup on your double bass. I know it's a different beast (piezo vs condenser mic), but how would you compare it to the DPA?
Thank you so much! Yeah they are very different - I would never use one without the other. I love the Wilsons because they are very clean, almost electric bass sounding, which makes them very useful in combination with a mic to both have the bassy, quick responding, clinical sound, and the colourful, warm and acoustic signal of the mic :)

Great that you got something out of the video! For me the ATM350 works best, as is has a really balanced and neutral character while handling spill from other sound sources in a nice way. But the DPA is also a great microphone which has a really nice top end (that can sometimes be annoying in a live setting though) and has a great mounting eco-system :)

Thanks for a very interesting, informative and detailed review. I'm looking for a mic that I can move from acoustic guitar to mandolin. The DPA has mounts for these instruments but it looks as though the Audio Technica does not. What did you use to fit?

DPA absplutly sounds better, but I cannot afford that much per mic!!! Even the 350 is pushing it!!!! I do want 4 of the 350s for Toms, but they just cost way to much for the shows I mix.
I do have on audio gig where the drummers are very good and they are very controlled and wont hit the tom mics, so I am going to put in 2 of the ATM350s in there.
Mathaeus, which of the various ATM models did you use? Does it end in an XLR out?

Nope, no high pass filters on any of them :)
@@mathaeus I got my hands on both mics finally. When I engage the hi pass filter on the atm350 it sounds very similar to the dpa4099. Only fair to engage it, as the dpa has the hi pass filter built in into the xlr adapter. I did my comparison with nylon string guitar only. Thanks!
@@fixingahole2 There is also a microdot to XLR adapter for the 4099 without the hi pass filter, which is the one I used for the test :)

On the violin, I don't know why the DPA4099 sounds sharper - as in more painful to the ears. hmm
Hello! Thank’s for the video! I have atm350 and radio system radio technica. When I play double bass only one on medium volume, the sound is good. When I play on high volume, the microphone hiss (sorry for my english). If I play with the drummer, microphone hiss even on medium volume. When i tune gain for good sound, then drum’s sound much louder then double bass. Would you help me how to tune atm350 on double bass. I attach the microphone on tailpiece by clip. Is it correct?

Which is better off axis rejection?
It depends... The DPA is a hypercardioid and the Audio Technica is a regular cardiod, so the rejection from the rear is much better with the Audio Technica, but rejection from sides is better with the DPA. IMO I think the Audio Technica does a better job of handling spill and bleed from other instruments :)
