Yes he is slapping the upright bass, and it almost sounds like a train moving along the tracks. Notice he did not once look at the piano, but you could tell he was listening for key changes. Damn he took that bass for a walk!

The slap bass technique is a staple of rockabilly and psychobilly music. Didn't know it was used in blues until I heard a live recording of Willie Dixon ("Big City Blues & Howlin' Wolf in Warsaw" - a great little album released by Radio Poland).

The godfather of the blues! His songs are blues and rock history! The most famous musicians of the 20th century covered his songs. The list of bands that have covered his songs is long and significant. Dixon deserves greater credit for his influence on music over the last century.

I love the fact that there appears to be such little effort in his playing. I know so much is going on, but his touch appears so light, controlled and just in the pocket. Just completely awesome. This is a perfect example of how simplicity and control prove perfection when debating differences in technique, soul, and musical training.

They are the combination that is for my ears the best. I have been wondering of voice. It was the only time that, at the first note, a chill ran up and down my spine. This was real Chicago blues that I had only read about and heard on record!. And when Willie Dixon sang "29 Ways" and others it was sheer joy. The man was a genius.

Electric slap bass in its most popular forum as most people know it started with Larry Graham making up for a lack of rhythm when the drummer left his mother and his band.....but again who started what wasn’t my original point.
