Traditional Western Herbalism is more often just like you explained about Chinese herbs than not. Today, modern approaches apply to both Chinese and Western herbalism . A main difference is that Chinese medicine has a longer, more unified tradition while Western Herbalism has had to continually rebirth itself after being attacked by whatever medical orthodoxy was present at the time. Traditional Western Herbalism on the whole, avoided the dangerous practices that are ascribed to them today. Take for example, George Washington's doctors who were University trained! There are other similarities and also major differences between the two but the herbal/patient energetics of flavors, directions, temperatures, etc. are the most basic premise of both.
"The Western Herbal Tradition: 2000 years of medicinal plant knowledge" by Graeme Tobyn is a good book... or anything by Matthew Wood is a good place to look if anyone is interested.

Yes, naturopaths and some people use a reductionist approach to herbs. But true western herbalists have a vitalist approach that has an energetics and diagnostic system just as detailed as tcm. (:

Youd be surprised just how close to TCM paracelsian medicine is, though people dont know it yet.

Hey all - one quick clarification. Gan Cao is widely used in a huge percentage of TCM formulas and it's indication is usually "to harmonize" or "moderate" other aspects of the formula.

I think you need to ask a 'Western' herbalist how they work and how long their traditions have been around.

Is this a new channel you started? I remember coming across you in another video a while ago.. and you had more videos/subs specifically about daily routine and stuff like that. Anyway, glad to have found you again. I have my first visit to a Chinese doctor, scheduled this Friday. Just doing research on what to expect. Thank you for sharing!

You explained the basic difference between the two approaches towards health and medicine very well. Chinese approach is more holistic, not to mention older. The western approach is more empirical but falls short on history.
