    We need to start a WRITE IN campaign to car manufacturers to wire a USB connector into the back of their rear view mirrors so the cameras can be powered with a short power cord from there instead of the messy cigarette lighter solution!

    • @TheChipmunk2008
      @TheChipmunk2008 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Peter Rafeiner That there is a decent bit of suggestion. Depending on the car, it might also be possible to put a linear or switchmode regulator tucked up in the interior (aka 'dome') light if it's near enough to the rearview mirror.
      That's a bit hands on for some people but it's another idea :)

      ***** Or make dash cams that can run on 12V, seeing that there are quite a few cars out there that seem to be using that kind of on board power :-)

    I recently bought this camera and found it to be excellent for the price £30 shipped from China. There is a mod out there to turn this into the international version (US) which is pretty straight forward to do. As for the silver colour which you could see from my car. A large black sharpie done the trick and now my dash cam is black.

    Hi Tehmoan, Just wanted to thank you for such a comprehensive video. I have bought one and it arrived yesterday.
    The firmware was actually behind yours but once you download the app, which is now as you prophesied in English, it can be easily updated.
    I'm looking forward to testing it tomorrow.
    Keep up the great work.

    I still think we need a public vote as to the names of your puppets so they can get proper IMDB profiles :-)!
    As for the camera; love the quality of the footage. Just wish there was a GPS option.
    BTW, you showed the little 'jump' where segments are divided. It may be a good idea to point out that in editing that can be easily removed and made seamless. I bet that quite a few viewers do not realize that.

    Xiaomi is actually one of the best electronics brands from China. I own two of their Android phones, and they're great! The put a lot of effort into product/software design and testing, which shows in the final product. I'm usually very picky, but I would buy anything with their name on without hesitation!

    • @Techmoan
      @Techmoan  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +hannes something It's easier to use a car camera in the car, an action camera for action and a traditional digital camera for anything else. Many people prefer to use their phone for the latter though. I'm all for using the right tool for the job.

    • @hananas2
      @hananas2 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Techmoan i just find the quality soamazing, my phone costs 300 euros and that little camera captures better video than my phone.
      i do agree with you but what if someone wants very good quality video and doesn't have that much money to spend?
      i think in that sort of situation it is acceptable to use such a ghetto solution.

    • @Techmoan
      @Techmoan  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +hannes something I think if you want an all-round camera that can be a dash-cam and a waterproof action cam, do slo-mo, timelapse and has stabilisation, you'll be better off with a Gitup Git2 rather than this camera with a USB battery attached.

    • @hananas2
      @hananas2 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Techmoan i just searched that camera and it's not that much more than the dashcam and battery pack indeed, i didn't know there were good cameras that are that cheap.

    it's nice to see that companies are starting to understand that wide aperture lenses are the way forward for dashcams, obviously, the wider the aperture, the more low light performance you get, f1.8 is the best you can get for such a small sensor though, but as you can see, it performs really well in all conditions.

    • @Jerbod2
      @Jerbod2 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mr Needs Problem with F1.8 is that the depth of field is very shallow, since you want things far away to be sharp, things close to the camera can't be.
      It's always a trade-off.

    • @MrNeeds
      @MrNeeds 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's not really a problem with wide angle lenses though, the focal length is much narrower than a 50mm for example, my guess is that they are using a 10mm lens for this cam.

    +Techmoan I recently purchased the Transcend DP220. My only gripes with it are; the square form factor makes hard to hide, it's limited to a 130 degree angle at only 1080 30fps, and it's not cheap. I do think it has excellent night quality, and that's very important as 80% of my driving is in the dark (no street lights) and the GPS. Do you think this new Xiaoyi Car Camera would tick those boxes (minus the GPS) for the lower price?

    As this takes power via USB, I wonder if you could leave it recording 24/7 so it captures whilst parked by running it off a USB battery pack (like the mobile/action cam charger packs you can get), which itself is then trickle charged whilst you drive?

    When an English version comes out i'll be seriously tempted to replace my Thinkware F750 dual set up with two of these. Video quality is just as good on this if not better, but more importantly it does 1080p60 which is the more important thing for me. Love the simplicity of the menus. The only things I would like to see is recording length adjustment and a sticky mount (not a suction mount) but perhaps this could be retrofitted

    The biggest problem with this mount type is that the camera will be never in exactly the same position and if you want a good centered image you need to adjust its position every time you slide it into the mount. Of course you can take off the whole thing from the windshield, but where will you keep it?

    After watching this review I bought the Yi dashcam, only to find out that it has one fundamental flaw that makes it utterly useless. I expected it to come with a suction mount, but mine just had a mount that you glue to the windscreen, permanently. No one in his right mind is going to ruin his windscreen and leave the camera attached day & night so as to attract burglars. What were they thinking at Yi ?? By the way: I did contact Tech Support at Yi and they promised to make the suction mount available via Amazon soon, which should come as good news for exisiting owners. I also suggested to upgrade the firmware, making it possible to turn the image upside down. This should allow you to mount the cam on your dashboard rather than sticking it to the windscreen. You could then connect it via a short lead to the car stereo.

    love the dash cam review vids. i was wondering if you'd do a review of some phone app dash cam recorders. i know you're an apple guy, but could you do some for both apple and android? not to ask to much from you, but not just apps designed for phones with top specs, but also for older phones that are more likely to be able to be dedicated for use as a dash cam. that's it for the moment, and thanks for recording.

    Very nice review again. Earlier on I bought the Transcend Drivepro 220 after you reviewed that one, but soon after that I already pre-ordered this Xiaomi because of the we wider lens and it did not disappoint me! Compared to the Transcend much brighter night recordings, the promised wider angle and almost twice the Wi-Fi transfer speed! (on Android)
    Only minus is the missing gps capability, but what to expect for this price! Now I'm curious how long it will live. (not melt in the sun for example; Had that in the past with the 'dashcam one's :))

    hi excellent review. looking at this for my first dash cam but i have one question, does the dash cam switch automatical to night mode or does it need manualy activating.

    What setting/resolution did you use on the yi cam when you are on the roads in this video?

    As always a great review and £70! not a lot of money for what you are getting. I notice you taking Edge Lane to the M62, If you had gone through the pipe you would have been able to join me for a cup of tea on The Wirral Hundred.

    I'm curious about the specs of the Micro SD you used. If filming at 2304x1296 and 30fps required about 20Mb/s, 1920x1080 at 60fps should take about 30Mb/s. I wonder if a U1 SD would be enough or better go for a U3 SD.

    I guess that being a huge smartphone brand gives Xiaomi the opportunity to put their phone sensors in cams like this for an affordable price. With great image quality as a result. The nice UI and app also seem to be a result of their smartphone pedigree. Gps and a more discrete colour would make this cam almost perfect.

    Great video as usual. Based on your previous video i have bought mobius about 3 years ago and now im thinking about upgrade. Is this something worth to consider?

    Hey there - what dashcam would you recommend that has the best video quality but has both inside cabin and out windscreen cameras to record both at once?

    Assuming the different video sizes are proper, none cropped or cheated by doubling frames (60p) or something?

    the image quality seems to be a little bit better than the Yi Action cam

    • @musguelha14
      @musguelha14 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +SevenShinoda It's because of the focus issues with the action cam. The lens is adjusted to focus really close to the camera because supposedly they made the Yi as sort of a selfie camera, so everything over a couple of meters from it looks out of focus.
      With the focus adjusted, they should be the same.

      +Pedro Silva Although the colour and exposure are great I still think it's focussing a fraction close. Super sharp bonnet/hood on the Mini but not quite as crisp from about 10 yards out. Maybe just me. The Liverpool clip about the best. Equally good on the Blog site but the rest seemed worse.

      @musguelha14 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you do seem to be right, those black dots on the windscreen look very sharp, so they might have made the same mistake.
      I've done some research and this does seem to be a totally different camera. Sensor is only 3MP against the Action Cam's 16MP, and a 165 degree lens in relation to the 155 on the Yi.
      Probably the chipset is totally different too, so no relation between the cameras.

    Hi, if you have a moment I have a basic question which doesn't appear to be covered in your videos/blog. I have ordered my first dashcam. it's basic, cheap and without GPS and am wondering what software you suggest for stitching loops together and viewing. I use a Mac, and really want the simplest, given that mine will not do GPS.
    Thanks in advance. I've posted here as this video seems to be your most recent dashcam review, apologies if I should have asked elsewhere. And as always, thanks for all your excellent (and increasing amusing) videos.

    I know it is not designed for this, but this seems like the perfect camera for my Let's Plays. Unfortunately the fact that it only records in 3 minute intervals and you can see the switch so severely puts a kink in that idea:( But it seems to have great low light capabilities which would be really good for me. Great video!

    Just wondering:
    Between Transcent Pro 200 and this Xiaomi, which would you choose (ignore the language issue) please?

    Any chance of a picture of it in situ in the car? It looks to be quite prominent based on the mounting system it uses.

      +kedaha yes it is not a discrete camera that you can hide away...see 15:05

    Did you test out that built in warning system? Seems odd how they put that in, but impressive that in theory at least they can get some image recognition running to pay attention to the lines on the road, and guess how close you are to other vehicles.

    • @Techmoan
      @Techmoan  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jesse Levesque it's a very common feature on dashcams now, most of the models I've tested over the last couple of years have this built in. I haven't tried it out recently.

    • @XOIIOXOIIO
      @XOIIOXOIIO 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting. I wonder if they will incorporate a "wrong lane" warning that will make that feature completely unusable for certain countries.

    • @Eric_the_Hiking
      @Eric_the_Hiking 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Techmoan Could you please test the effectiveness of those features for us, even if you don't care for them yourself?

    • @SamiLuo
      @SamiLuo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jesse Levesque the ADAS applies when your car speed over 50km/h and with GPS on, works good (this also states in the manual of YI cam). but if beyond that speed then... false warning..

    love the ending. You've got silencing the youtube idiots to a T, leaving mostly sensible comments. The dash cam looks really good. I like that simple menu system, even in chinese it's easy to use.

    maybe it better to wait for an English version, perhaps they will add the feature to turn off the G sensor, as I find it quite annoying to be formatting the card every few weeks, other than that, its one of the best cameras for the price
