- 🌍 Man has always been fascinated by the depths of the oceans. Water has that something that attracts us, scares us and amazes us at the same time. And for good reason, it is the most present substance on Earth, and, along with air, the main ingredient that allows life as we know it. Water covers more than 70% of the Earth's surface, while 95% of these waters have not yet been explored. This fascination for the abyss, many people have used it to shape various myths and legends, such as that of the lost city of Atlantis. According to this legend, an inhabited city would be completely buried under the sea after being buried by a huge tidal wave, more than 9000 years ago.
Today, it is not Atlantis that we are going to talk about but an eighth continent that exists scientifically as a land. A place that you may have already visited in part, without knowing it. It is Zelandia.
Before we take you on a tour of Zelandia then and now, it is important to go back to where it all began, geologically speaking, because another supercontinent existed before. This is the story of the last of a race of geological titans, a supercontinent called Gondwana.

💥 Zelandia: The Vanished Container:
- At the end of the Ediacaran period, some 500 million years ago, the Earth was quite different. Tectonic movements brought together Africa, South America, Australia, Antarctica, India, the Arabian Peninsula and Madagascar. Almost to the South Pole, this was the first version of Gondwana. The climate was mild at that time, because the world was warmer. Multicellular organisms had developed, but they were primitive. Many fossils were found showing segmented worms, round jellyfish-like creatures, and sling-like organisms.
Over time, other continents collided with this first Gondwanaland to form Pangea, the "Whole Earth," approximately 300 million years ago. Pangea was gigantic: the entire continental mass of the planet was merged into a single block dominating the southern hemisphere, surrounded by the largest ocean in history. 20 to 70 million years later, plumes of magma from the Earth's core began to burn through the crust like a blowtorch, creating a rift between what we now know as Africa, South America and North America. Convection cells associated with these plumes expanded the rift into a new ocean: Tethys, dividing the northern supercontinent called Laurasia, comprising North America, Europe and Asia today, from the southern supercontinent, our fully formed Gondwanaland. The latter loses some of its original parts to Laurasia, such as Florida and parts of Georgia, but it still contains all the landmasses we see today in the southern hemisphere.
And the beginnings of Zelandia are already here.
Here we are in the land of Zelandia. If you have in mind New Zealand and New Caledonia today, the scenery is quite different back then. Yet, on closer inspection, there are still some similarities, elements of nature that have survived the passage of time.
Was modern man present? No, none of the representatives of our species was in place to witness it. The masters of the land, those who ruled Zelandia at that time, were the dinosaurs. The most imposing creatures that the earth has ever sheltered walk the surface of the continent. With a remarkable diversity, predators and prey inhabit Zelandia's 4.9 square kilometers of total area.
At the time, Zelandia enjoys a subtropical climate. Its hot season is long. As for the cold seasons, they are much milder than in the temperate zones and are accompanied by some rainfall. Fauna and flora abound on the continental block. There is an exponential growth of forests, which, combined with the humid climate, creates a warm environment conducive to life. This is why the animals of the time reach colossal sizes, whether on land or in the seas.

When people start building underwater cities, that's going to be some prime real estate.
Honestly the sheer power of water and land scare me. I can’t imagine how many civilizations/animals have been completely wiped out by sinking continents and other crazy events. I can’t imagine the fear of those folks. I just watched a doc on Herculaneum (Pompeii’s sister city) and it was heartbreaking what they had gone through!

The seas opened very slowly indeed animals would not notice, and there were no civilisations back then. people had not developed from our ancestral forms of life.

you should work on how to pronounce many of the things you talked about on this video, as a New Zealnder myself if was as if you were talking about a completely different place. hard to follow but loved the facts :)
Tasman discovered New Zealand? Cook discovered Hawai'i? Both lands had already been discovered by humans and were already inhabited when "discovered".
Exactly ! Like Livingstone discovered Victoria falls or central Africa , the natives who lived there didn't have a clue where they were apparently and to be quite honest and in hindsight should have kicked his arse out of there big time !!!!

Exactly my thoughts what I was going to write... It is named new Zealand for a reason, after the dutch province where Abe Tasman was originally from. And ofcourse the island of Tasmania is named after him.

The two cases you mention are illustrations. In short, you perpetuate the same attirude as Tasman, Cook and co. No matter what excuses anyone offers, it is an example of cultural arrogance.

While NZ/ Aotearoa and New Caledonia / Kanaky are the main surviving parts of Zealandia , the Chattam islands / Rekohu are also a surviving part . The extinct man sized Moa bird is known from pre European NZ /Aotearoa , there is all so in Moriori lore from the Chattam islands /Rekohu a large man sized bird that was known to hunt and kill men . It was soon dispatched by the Moriori .
Quite wrong. The Maori were warlike and enslaved and ate local populations when they showed up in New Zealand. Also wiping out Moa in a greedy stone age kind of way. Moriori were part of an indigenous population that existed here pre-Moari. They were isolated to small pockets like the Chatam Islands. Your assumption that Moriori wiped out Moa is incorrect.
@@tatsndreads5491 No I never said it was the moa bird they exterminated we all know that was killed off by the first moa hunters who went on to become Maori , the bird I am talking about was a native of the Chattam islands which is the only Moriori homeland ever to exist . Any way this bird may or may not have been a distant relation to the moa from zealandia days but when Moriori first arrived at Rekohu there was this bird and it was a man killer , it most likely used to kill the seals living on a small island there so it had to be exterminated .Think of something more like a very bad cassowary , not saying it was related ???
@karfomachet7265 Ah, I see. My apologies, the only bird that would have been remotely fitting the description may have been the Giant NZ eagles. I'd imagine they were more than capable of flying that far out to sea and colonizing the Chatams.
@@tatsndreads5491 Yes your right spot on , that is one I had not considered . I don't know much about it or its place in the moa hunter lore = Waitaha , Kati Mamoe , Ngati Hutu ect . I do know the Chattam bird has been verified by a number of bones and it had deadly claws and they all so found the remains its food to - seals sharks and birds I think

Maori were not the first immigrants to arrive in NZ. Also about 9-12 thousand years ago the sea level was up to 130m lower. Perhaps there are remains to be discovered under the sea?
