Grand Prix 3 With Windows 10 - Installation Tutorial (Racing Wheel Setup Included)

- I've been getting many requests for a guide on how to run GP3 with Windows 10 so I decided to do my best and here it is! Note that the end result with Windows 10 is probably not going to be perfect although you're probably going to get it to run decently. The game will most likely crash to the desktop sometimes but you can use the autosave feature in GPxPatch to prevent losing any progress in your race.

It's very cheap and you can cancel any time.
Setting up a racing wheel with pedals is also included in this guide.
You'll need the following stuff mentioned in the video to make it work:
Official patch for GP3 to bring it up to 1.13 and the NO CD patch:
www.grandprixg...
GPxPatch to improve compatibility and activate the auto-save feature:
rsdi.home.xs4a...
dgVoodoo2 to make the hardware accelerated graphics to work:
dege.freeweb.hu...
TechJam folder for Grand Prix 3 to get rid of the pink-striped-tires bug. You'll find the folder you have to replace with this one under GP3jamsH -folder:

If you prefer to read this tutorial in text-format instead of a video, here's a link to my blog post on the matter:

Good luck and hopefully everything works out for you! There's also a thread in the grandprixgames.org -forums where you can find more tips and advice regarding this issue:

it's surprising how good this game still looks after 2 decades. GC is a genius, we all owe him a debt of gratitude. Thanks "Ted"
It does indeed. Especially wet conditions look amazing with all the reflections and water sprays.
However GP4 looks way more amazing because the graphics engine scales way better for modern PC:s. And GP4 is just couple of years younger than GP3!

Do you disable traction control? That just ruins that game for me. When disabled it puts the player at a disadvantage because the AI are faster, but I find it too easy and boring with it on.
flawless explanation (especially for the wife part)
Sometimes they just don't understand 😭
I just was thinking the same thing (especially for the wife part🤣👍)
I can tell you right now I was absolutely addicted to this simulation in the past. It was this that fueled my interest in Formula One.
For me it was F1GP and GP2, but I might be a little bit older :)
Good stuff! Another important note is that pretty much all custom content (like the TV captions in your hardcore season vids, custom tracks etc) requires hardware mode graphics on, so even if you can live with slightly sub standard graphics it's worth getting hardware mode working. Mrs Lackadaisical isn't so happy as I now spend far too much time learning new circuits and messing around with DgVoodoo!
Yeah you're right and was it so that also the modded tracks require hardware graphics? Also I have to mention that after more testing it seems to crash a lot less with hardware graphics, with software graphics it crashes to desktop very often especially if it's wet.
Massive thumbs up from me! Thank you so so so so so so so so so so so much! :D
You are very much welcome 👍
Thanks so much mate, I was missing one key step near the end to get Hardware mode working successfully. I had been settling for Software mode due to this, which meant I could not have any of the GPxPatch overlays. Thanks again.
Oh, great to hear this opened a knot! Just out of curiosity, what was the step you were missing?
@@TedMeat Ok mate so I’d even got as far as downloading dg, and playing about with the settings. I think it may have been the location of dg or not moving files into the GP3 folder that proved the problem. I had even sorted the pink tyre issue myself but still had the horrible PO at 600%+
@@DarylLewis Oh yes, the dll-files! I don't know how you're even supposed to know that you should move some files around if someone doesn't tell you.
The BmÄ got me dying mate, thanks for the tutorial!
You're welcome, hopefully in addition to dying it also helps out with the game :)
@@TedMeat hahaha
gotta say you really help me SPECIALLY AT 5:57 THANKS!!!!!
You're welcome :) Always great to hear someone finding these videos helpful!
Hi Ted, I restarted playing this masterpiece thanks to your effort. Played both gp2 and gp3 20 years ago but keyboard only. So one month ago I bought a t150 Pro and I want to share here my experience about settings because I found very helpful the Low sensitivity zone set at 5/10% because I had problems go straight. I don't know if this is a problem of my wheel or if anyone else had the same issue, anyway hope this is helpful. Cheers!
Hmm, sounds like you have a problem with you wheel 🤔 For me it works very well with 0% low sensitivity zone. Does the force feedback work on your wheel? It should help a lot because the resistance increases when you're going fast on a straight line, quite easy to keep the steering steady.
@@TedMeat ffb works ok. Actually it seems my wheel is too sensitive. If I'm on a straight and I want to make a small correction, when I move the wheel it steer too much so I have to make another small move in the opposite direction and keep having that snake movement through all the straight. I *think* it could be that a t150 has 12 bit resolution against 16 bit of a t300 or a t500 like yours. Having that 5/10% of low sensitivity zone permits me to have smoother movements and keep the car where I want. I also run some tests with my wheel and it seems working ok on the hardware side. I don't know if there's a specific program to test the wheel other than the thrustmaster software
"Honey, the new box in living-room needs its own wheel... No, the new one is too new, it needs an older one..." LOL!
Thanks for the explanations, links, indications, details and of course, the ßmÄ enunciation : D!
Note: MacLeod+Meat = sweet dreams ^ ^.
Thanks a lot! Love your channel btw.
My pleasure, hopefully it's useful 👍 Great to hear you enjoy my shanancance 🙂
Superb video Ted, well done! Just wanted to mention that for me the software mode give better performance than hw mode. I´m using an onboard graphics (intel uhd 630).
Thanks Roberto! Yeah it might be that the 3D acceleration is a bit slower with onboard graphics. The game is still great even without the eye-candy though!
The wife part was absolutely hilarious 😂
It's funny because it's true.
I have a problem:
I cannot pause the game by pressing P on my keyboard while I'm using my racing wheel. How can I fix this?
Hey! P doesn't work with a wheel, you'll have to press space to pause the game 🙂
@@TedMeat thanks
You will need at least a virtual cd drive or a real optical drive to run GP3. I tested it on both configurations, without an optical drive, GP3 asks for a cd, also with the decrypted EXE.
Yep, I forgot to mention that on the video. You'd think that no-cd patch means you don't need a cd :D
@@TedMeat was thinking about "whats the difference of the 2 PCs? Oh yes, the optical drive." Never had something like that with any other software. Still driving F1GP in DosBox 😁 this gem should get a remaster, no remake as it can't get as good as the original. GOG, we need you.
Great information here. I still have Grand Prix 3, so I may try this out in the future.
Love your channel, when is the next race for Grand Prix 3 scheduled?
Hi! Hope it works out for you if u try it out, it's sometimes tricky with Windows 10 but should be ok. No schedule for next race yet but I'll try to do it in couple of weeks. I'm currently out on a holiday so no chance to practice for Barcelona currently. Damn holidays >:|
@@TedMeat Okay. Thank you for the reply. Good luck for when Barcelona comes around.
Thank you for tutorial 👍👍👍
You're welcome 👍
Thanks, finally got this working on windows 10! One question though, my screen is using 16:9 resolution and the game 4:3. How did you get GP3 running so that the image is not stretched?
Ok, actually found the answer myself :D In dgVoodoo control panel, General -> selected windowed -> Stretched, 4:3 Aspect ratio. Now it looks pretty good! Not as good as with WinXP, but cannot get everything. Had to disable smoke as wet races were a slideshow with it enabled, but the game itself still rocks!
Ahh, forgot to include that on the video. Glad to hear you figured it out, I've been super busy for the past week and haven't been able to browse trough all the comments. And yeah the performance is still a problem but depends heavily on what hardware you have. With GP3 2000 it's even worse :(
I like carts. Amazing game grand prix! You are very fast!
Well thank you :) There are many faster drivers out there but I do my best.
Hi, i have a like a green download arrow icon on the top right of my screen. Do you know how to remove that ?
The arrow is the auto save function of GPxPatch that saves the game into the auto-save folder each time the leader crosses the line. If you want to remove it start GPxPatch, go to the "GPxLap" tab and uncheck "Enable autosave". I'd recommend to keep it on though in case the game crashes in the middle of the race.
@@TedMeat oh okey! I'm thinking this one was for notice me "Hey you have an update". We don't have the option just for remove the icon but keep the function on?
@@floriancdl8620 Not that I know of. I kinda got used to it after a while :)
Is it possible to configure a simucube? It asks me to press fire during the calibration but it doesn’t work any button on the steering wheel. Is there a solution or is impossible?
It should be possible. You might need joy2key or some other re-mapping programs to get it to work. Also make sure to unplug all other controllers, like stick shifters etc. This game only supports two controllers and if there are more than that plugged in it gets all confused.
Hello, I would love to say it's working, but for some reason after launching .exe file nothing happens, it seems to me a bit weird, as I remember many years ago on same PC I managed to run GP3. I tried different compability mode and dgvoodoo2. Also when I'm lauching through gpxpatch I got error and txt file with error information. A bit weird, so maybe you have any ideas what could be wrong
I have a more in depth question. I am attempting to play GP2 which uses the same setup with the GP edit to upload car packs. Whenever I use the GP2 edit program to open the 1950 car pack and then export that to the game, I cannot drive any of the cars. I choose a driver, enter a quick race and then I have no control over the car. Before this was due to exporting to the game racers with no names so I assume something isn't correct for the export to the game. Are there any boxes you leave blank when exporting a car set to the game?
Sorry I can't help you, last time I used mods with GP2 was about 20 years ago :( I'll do some modded seasons with GP2 so I'll have to re-learn everything. You might find help from the forums at grandprix2.de/
Why when I instal the GP 3 patch :
Please insert the Grand Prix 3 CD
What wrong with my how the instal?
You have the CD mounted in your virtual CD drive? And sorry for the late answer!
@@TedMeat owhhh okkay , I download mounted cd before? Because I dont have CD Mounted in my windows
No problem bro, its okkay
Why does the track not render for me when I use the dgvoodoo wrapper?
It's hard to say not knowing your system. You might find some help from discord (under GP4 there's discussion of GP3 as well) or in the forums.
@@TedMeat oh okay thanks
I've been told, "binkw32.dll was missing." After I download it, It said "binkw32.dll is incorrectly in the Windows or Windows system directory." How do I fix it, please?
Hmm, never heard of this problem. There's a topic in the grandprixgames.org -forums, but it's for GP4. Might help for GP3 as well, check it out: www.grandprixgames.org/read.php?4,1110637,1110688
First try compatibility mode on the exe. May get rid of the DLL issue. If not try get the DLL required and put in the games install folder. Make sure you get the DLL safely and scan with your antivirus first before using.
Not sure if you know how to help me, but I do have a problem. Whenever I run the game in hardware mode, it doesn't run smoothly at all in races. I followed exactly what you did in the video but it only runs smoothly in software mode. I'd like to have the official overlay but it's not possible now. Any idea if I missed anything?
Hi! So you mean there's some performance issues with slow-downs? I'm sorry to say that even with dgvoodoo and everything the performance might be bad, it's just not very compatible with modern machines. I have quite a powerful PC myself and it sometimes struggles with GP3. You can help it a bit by reducing details in the graphic settings, like details in the mirrors etc. For me the game struggles a bit but is still playable but I still prefer to run the game on Windows 7 because it runs better.
Hello thank you very much. Is there a patch so that the original ads from the time and Villeneuve's name are on Williams?
Coming back to play more GP3 and this time I wanted to do some modding. I installed my game as you explain here, but whenever I input a carset through gpedit my cars all have blue across the hood (missing textures) and the steering wheel is not hardware graphics. The steering wheel remains the old software look. Any suggestions as to what is causing this? I have tried several mods post years apart.
Hmm, sorry but I haven't tried any modding for GP3. You could check out www.grandprixgames.org if someone else has had that kind of a problem.
Hello TM,
I need a bit of help setting up the pedals for all Geoff Crammond games. I'm using T-LCM pedals but cannot get them to work how I need them to. The three pedals are all being shown in the same axis in the games and I'm not finding the solution to separate the three. Have you got a clue on how to fix this?
Ahh, sounds a tricky one 😐 So the same problem in every game huh? For me the other games worked out-of-box but for GP4 I had to combine the pedal axes to get them working, so you might wanna try that. I know it's not a great solution but if it works, at least you can drive.
Also do you have any other game controllers connected? If you have, plug them off, they might mess up with the games since they only support a limited amount of controllers.
Also for DOSBox (for f1gp and gp2) I have the following lines in the config file for joystick:
joysticktype = auto
timed = true
autofire = false
swap34 = false
buttonwrap = false
circularinput = false
deadzone = 0
Just guesswork I'm afraid. Please let me know if you find the solution, it might help others as well!
@@TedMeat I found a fix! A rather simple solution; to unplug my shifter.
As it is on top of the list of USB-controllers it and the wheel second it leaves the pedals without room for their inputs.
That with the combine solution you provided also helped me figure out calibrating the pedals how I need them. Thank you!
@@GrandPrixYannick excellent, great to hear it works! 👍
About the wheel, I've got a Logitech G29 on Windows 10. I don't have any FFB no matter what I try, but it worked fine when I had my old G27. Do you know by any chance what could bring the FFB back for the G29 or is it just too "modern" for GP3?
Oh you had already asked about this in the grandprixgames.org forums I see. Honestly don't know how to fix it and can't really try it out because I don't have G29 :(
@@TedMeat Ah..too bad. Thank you for the reply anyway! :)
I know this is a 3 year old question, but if anyone is still struggling with this, your wheel has to be the first one that shows up in the game, it HAS to be controller "A" for force feedback to work. This is the same in gp4. Use something like "hidhide" or unplug all other controllers and reboot the pc, then launch gp3. This is what worked for me.
@@brianlabbie I solved my issue by getting a Thrustmaster T-GT II so I can't actually prove whether or not that's the case but if that's the way to solve it - god damn son! Thank you.
Very usefull! Good work :)
Thank you and good luck with the game :)
Thanks!
Couple of questions though.
Is there a way to uncap the framerate, or at least get 60fps instead of 26fps?
Is there a way to have widescreen in this game?
By the way, I couldn't find the nocd with the link you provided, had to download it from gamecopyworld.
And you need dgvoodoo 2.52, the later ones don't work atm.
Hi! Sorry but no, the frame rate is limited to 26fps. The physics engine is fps based so increasing fps would cause AI driver to crash and all sorts of other weird things to happen. Also widescreen is not possible I'm afraid.
@@TedMeat i see, thanks!
Brilliant video. Just one thing. I've got a big μtime tab in the top left corner, that doesn't go away. How do I remove it? Is it gpx patch that put it in there?
Hmm, I'm not sure what that could be. You can try to disable all the features in GPxPatch (unheck GPxSet, GPxLap etc) and see if it goes away?
@@TedMeat hotkey 'M' did the work. Thanks, looking forward to next race. :-)
Loved this but after the dgVoodoo step I can't start the game anymore, I read "Direct draw is not installed", shall I reinstall DirectX?
Hmm. I remember reading dgVoodoo doesn't like some video cards. That might cause the issue. If it doesn't work you might want to try DxWnd instead. I never got that working myself but you might have better luck. There are instructions for DxWnd on OldRacingGames TH-cam channel: th-cam.com/video/_SkxdP6xwXQ/w-d-xo.html
@@TedMeat Will have a look, thanks man! Awesome work in your channel.
ted! i've got a problem with GP4, in game gas and brake are on the same Y axes, tried vjoy and ucr but did not works...my wheel is a T300 with T3PA pedals.
please can you help me??
Hi Marcello! Actually I have the same problem with GP4 and have to use same axes for brake and throttle :( I also tried to figure it out but failed, I guess it's a common problem with Thrustmaster equipment. I'll be sure to let you know if I find a solution some day.

Thanks! It's great video. But, I have problem. After setup voodoo2 and i restart Gpx Patch, it's show this error "Direct Draw not installed". I use Windows 10.
Hmm, that might be a graphics card issue. But I found this on Grandprixgames.org, I don't know if it works but someone said "I had the same issue (Direct Draw not installed). I removed the directdraw.dll from the grandprix 3 folder an it worked just fine for me ;)!"
Haha! Yeeessss it works! Thanks bro
Excellent, happy to hear it worked out for you! There's surprisingly much work that goes into making these tutorials so it's awesome to hear they're not going to waste!
After this, my screen isn´t scaled anymore, it´s complete stratched, any tips?
Try to go into windowed mode and back by pressing alt + enter. Worked for me :)
Could you do the same video just wth GP4 in the near future?
Actually this is on my to-do list! I can't promise any schedules but I'll try to put it together at some point.
You're not tech support but maybe you've come across this before. I've tried this but for some reason, I kept getting a direct draw not installed message (it was). Once I used the 2024 update to dgvoodoo2, it did load but the hardware mode in game only loads the cockpit image, every other bit of rendering is broken (mirrors sometimes show lines, rest of image is gray). Do you have any clue how to get this to work? I'm on a 64-bit installation of W11.
Sorry to say I haven't stumbled upon this issue myself. The rendering problem kinda sounds that dgvoodoo is not working properly. It might be a graphics card related issue. If you have an integrated card it might not work with dgvoodoo.
Hi I did everything as you mentioned adn everything works well with the SW grapich settings, but I would like to change it to HW all of the cars and the environment is white :( any suggestion?
I'm afraid it's really hard to say what's going on. GP3 seems to be kinda problematic on some systems. How does it work without dgvoodoo, is the environment still white?
@@TedMeat without dgvoodoo the colours are fine I just have terrible performance....
@@ramonderer2715 Sorry but it's hard to say what's going on. Was that you or someone else having similar issues at: www.grandprixgames.org/read.php?1,1097753,page=7
Perhaps someone there can help you :(
Does the wheel setup also apply for GP4? I've got a Thrustmaster TMX and can only use combined pedals :/
Nope :( I have the same problem with GP4 and a Thrustmaster wheel. I suppose it's a common problem with TM wheels :( It works with separate axes if you don't patch the game but then it's buggy and you'll get the "wheel pulls left" -problem. Then if you patch the game you get rid of the bugs but no more separate pedals. Really annoying.
There might be a workaround if you use vJoy and universal joystick re-mapper or something but I haven't tried that yet. If I'll find a solution I'll make a tutorial.
Thanks for this guide, you had me laughing at some points, specially the BMÄ thing. I have one problem though, I have no force feedback on GP3. I'm using a G29 wheel. I also play GP4 and I have force feddback working correctly. Any guess? How can I solve this issue?
Sorry for the late answer. Sounds weird, is the force feedback checkbox in the game grayed-out or you simply don't get any feedback during game play even if it's activated?
@@TedMeat it shows as activated in the game. I can enable it or disable it, all OK. But I simply don't get any force Feedback. I followed your guide word by word, I even got the BMÁ thingy too.
Amazing tutorial - simply perfect. Works well on Windows 11 too (don't install this, it sucks). Is there any way to boost settings in dgVoodoo so to avoid FPS reduction in race starts?
Yeah I installed Windows 11 onto my laptop. They always say Microsoft fails every other OS so 11 is the one this time :D
I don't know how to boost the settings in dgVoodoo I'm afraid. Just have to reduce details etc. in game :(
How can use Nvidia? I saw in video, Nvidia activating
Hello, thanks for the video. Game is working good. I just wanted the 2000 season update also. Can you help me?
Hi! The 2000 season update was sold as an "expansion" for GP3. Currently I don't know if that's abandonware or not but you might try to find it on ebay, amazon or somewhere. However the performance is way worse than with the original GP3, it's very very very slow if you don't have a Windows XP PC or something like that :/
There is GP2000 abandonware now. For install look for GP3 2000 install fix then you don't need the GP3 cd in your drive.
VERY useful! 👍
Might be handy for myself as well since some day I'll have to install the game again and then I can just watch my own guide :D

I couldn't find legacy drivers for my Logitech g29 to play with these games on my old XP desktop. Therefore I had to look out for and get an old (but like new) g27. But I would love to have the legacy drivers for a newer wheel just in case my g27 eventually dies. If anybody knows where those legacy drivers are and can offer advice through experience like "Yes I use a new say g29 wheel on an old XP" I would be eternally grateful.
You could try your luck with Logitech support. I didn't find legacy drivers for my Thrustmaster but their support was kind enough to point me a location of old XP drivers.
Thanks Ted 👍 I will give it a go. Good idea. I'd just like to prepare for the possibility of moving to a new wheel & using with my XP. Either that or eventually go newer OS. Then I may look at Fanatec and therefore update to another level. Cheers again Ted 😀👋

In fact, I can actually enter in the game, but when I enter the track, nothing really appears: it's just a big black screen with only the sounds on it. The game is running, but the images/footage aren't
Hey! The game seems to demand the CD even if you have the no cd installed, at least in my case. So mount the cd before running the game.

Make an ISO of GP3 with programme like magic iso. See YT for tutorial regarding latter.
Then double click the iso when done to mount and the game shouldn't ask for a cd anymore.

You might find it from My Abandonware. That is if it's considered abandonware nowadays. I'm not sure though because GP3 was sold in a bundle with other Hasbro games just recently and that means it's still "on the market" and thus not abandonware.
what about grand prix 4
I made a video on installing GP4 but it got taken down by TH-cam for being "harmful content" :D However, try typing "GP4 installer" on Google, you'll find an installer that should do everything for you :)
@@TedMeat man. youtube's copyright system is so bad
By the way, I run this on Windows Vista perfectly.
Yeah, works way better on Vista or Windows 7 than with 10.
personally i use software graphics and my wheel is thurstmaster t150. the result is very good and the races are very enjoybale. To my eye the difference is not that great between the two so i will continue with the software. ok maybe i am blind.. BUT GOD I STILL PREFER MORE grand prix 2 hahahhaah
Yeah, it's just a bit more eye candy, the game is still the same. Honestly you don't even notice the graphics when you're driving. However for me the game seems to crash a lot more often in software mode with Windows 10, especially if it's wet. Also some people want to use GPxPatch overlays and they don't work in software mode.
Sorry to bother you, but i've problems to launch the game, when i click it tells me something about the file log or something
Hmm, haven't had that before :/ Can you tell what it says about the log file?
@@TedMeat no problem i solved that, i played a bit and now it tells me:"please insert the grand prix 3 cd rom in any drive"
@@pianortd4800 Yeah even if you have the no cd patch you still need to mount the cd image (or have cd in the cd drive) to play the game.
@@TedMeat oh, i played for an hour without cd and then it came out this problem
@@TedMeat i actually solved every problem and i'm playing rn, the only little problem is that the game crashes if i'm playing under the rain (max rain)
😂😂😂😂👏
Doesn`t work for me. Followed all instructions. When i try and start the game, i get Unable to load file: idata/american_english.str. Please install game. HELP!
Hmm, first time i've heard of that. You might find help from www.grandprixgames.org. There is a thread of that with two messages but I don't know if this will help you: www.grandprixgames.org/read.php?1,18659
