As a bakery owner (in Belgium) I can tell you that the price of butter in the last year and a half is much higher than it used to be, and this is one of the reasons many bakeries are using margarine (and you can obviously feel the difference in taste and texture). The difference in the prices probably comes from the different locations as well. Kayser is not bad for a chain (and I love their financier pistache!). And I have to say, even though my husband is baking since he was a teenager, taking classes in the Ritz and in Cordon Bleu really made a difference in our croissants game. Love it! Thank you as always for the video!
You're most welcome! One of the questions I asked Apollonia that didn't make the cut was how they make money on croissants given the amount of labor that goes into them and she said it's a labor of love. I imagine the rising price of butter only compounds that. I'll have to put her full interview up on Patreon, I think it was a fun insight. Thanks for sharing yours!🥐🥐
Your videos compelled me travelling to Paris again but this time really exploring not only the most famous sights but also the ones that are not well known. I fell in love with that beautiful city ever since my last trip so please continue making these great videos Jay!!!
Boulangerie-Pâtisserie Terroirs d'Avenir on Rue De Nil. I'll admit, and to your point at the end, I have not had that many croissants in Paris (yet), my wife and I found those ones to be excellent. it will be one of the first places we hit when we get back to Paris. That whole street (Rue to Nil) is pretty cool with little shops for meat, cheese, fish etc. worth a stop if you are in the area.
I returned to work after a month in France and had a taste for a croissant and coffee. I bought one at my office’s pastry shop. I could tell right away it was a mistake. It was cold and heavy. I took one bite and threw it out. I’ve become the croissant snob I always feared.
Can't wait to get there!! Ill be there in March.. Thank you so much for everything. Binged your channel for the past 2 months!! thank you would love to meet you if you're still in Paris! Thanks again.
My friend, I have been watching your videos since about 2018. You were my inspiration both to move to Europe and record my adventures. My interest in doing that ebbs and flows, but watching your videos never does. Keep up the good work!
I love your videos and I wish I would have had the time when I was in France to do some more food tasting! We were so busy going from place to place that we skipped meals sometimes! Love your positive vibes!!! Thanks for sharing your tips and recommendations!
0:10 Monsieur Jay Swanson is no less of an authority than Vogue. Also, he makes longer videos and doesn’t leave his fans hanging. An homme of the peuple, as it were.
One of my first Parisian Croissants was somewhere in the Bastille (over twenty years ago) and has left a lasting impression on me. Something so simple but still so complex.
I’ve been enjoying all your videos, and cannot wait to sample some myself when we travel to Paris in spring!! Yum! You’ve been such a help in my planning. Merci beaucoup!!
My Parisien husband’s favorite croissants were from the now closed Carton on Rue Buci. I ended up taking a class in Paris on lamination for dough and now make my own. My husband is extremely ‘eppy because mine are pretty darn good!
Jay, you mention horn shaped... made me laugh. Reminded me of when I asked my parents what do we call them in chinese/Cantonese, they told me "cow horn bun" aka gnow kok bao.
1:30 She left out something - the magic dust they sprinkle in all their bread in Paris. I cannot explain it but when you eat the bread there you realize there is something magic. I thought it was overhyped until I went.
Just a quick thanks for these videos and your guide! Used it to get going on my recent trip to Paris this past December and it was so helpful. NOW - head to Mamiche and try a few items, two locations, both are terrific.
They all are a little different but still better than anything I can find here in Arizona. I am sure it is hard to rate them because they each have unique characteristics. Which I didn’t realize. There is no perfect croissant 🥐. It comes down to what you like and what the baker likes making. :). So cool. Thanks Jay
I like the last point about comparing croissants in France to what you've had before. There's an "award winning" bakery near me (Boston) that charges $5.75 for a croissant and they're not as good as almost every croissant I've had in France.
I just wanted to drop a thank you Jay. My other half and I are coming to Paris in May, and we've had hours of information from you via your posts. We are really looking forward to coming now, and it's thanks to you and what you do. If we see you, we'll buy you a coffee and a croissant. :) (Hi to Cooper too) Cheers.
My first proper croissant in paris was from PAUL. And i loved it( i know it's a chain and i need to try many more spots like the ones u showed here)and then i tried some more places here n there without knowing what's the ultimate best but am here to learn :). thanx for ur great helpful videos as always! Definitely gonna try some of these places in my next trip.
Good video. Cedric Grolet and the café en Hôtel Cheval Blanc also get a lot of hype for good reason, but they are crazy expensive because of the locations and packaging so not just on taste. From an economic perspective, you can’t really justify them, but maybe worth a try if you’re feeling ‘fancy’. Also, it seems based on my experience that you have to control for time of day (or at least time out of oven). Oh, and you were just down the street from my old flat when you went to Farine & O- love Rue de Martyrs
I'm partial to Du Pain et des Idées. Less picture perfect but has more of a home made vibe that I loved. Also the escargot pistache-chocolat there is one of the best things I ate on Paris.
Du pain et des idées is a must go to. As a local for 27 years, I 100% validate it. Try "Les gamins du faubourg" and "Urban bakery" too, the croissants are worth it.
Hi Jay, long time watcher and so enjoy the videos. You made our first trip to Paris so much more memorable. Our second trip we just winged it, have to say we love Paris and all the wonderful people. Hoping to get back after the Olympics to see Notre Dame restored. Anyway, love Eric Kaiser for croissants but hope to hit a few of your recommended. spots on our next visit. Is it me, or are you enjoying life a lot more these days, if so, good for you !
Too bad smell-o-vision isn’t a thing yet-that initial hit of butter, yeast and baker’s magic from fresh croissants has to be experienced first hand still. Thanks for the remote visit!
Been in Isabelle past week, it's best buy for me, value for money and taste ^^ Also guys try some of them in local markets such as Monop' at Pigalle. When they are fresh it's yummy and they are ofc cheaper, for 0.9€.
I hear what you’re saying about the first real Parisian croissant being your “favorite ever” for a while! Mine was the one served at Bar du Central in the 7th. (Coffee there isn’t bad either, and the hostess is kind. Both bonuses!)
Same! I'm convinced the best Croissant in Paris is the random boulangerie down the street from me (and I have to walk past Benoit Castel to get there haha!)
Nothing can beat croissants 🥐 of Maison d’Isabelle. Best in Paris. Very buttery inside, crunchy outside and slightly smoky/nutty note from baked butter
Thanks for the video. I found a couple more to add to my list for my trip in a few weeks. I didn’t see Blé Sucre on the list. Have you had their croissant? David Lebovitz says that’s the best croissant in Paris and I have never had one that has been better than theirs but I’m going to try more soon.
I'm sorry! It's working for some and not for others - we had some technical problems and it's partially down right now. Hopefully it's back up within 24hrs for you. I hope you enjoy it if you decide to get it =D
Very good video Jay. I was happy you weren't eating them all the same day. I now crave croissants. We have decent ones here in Gotham but not like Paris.
Most of the list is VOGUE and other related mags are real BS. It's soft "content marketing" via PR from the entity that is featured. Or, just plain laziness to fill pages. Some assistant does a Google search and they "pick" whatever sounds good. The state of "journalism" is terrible today.
where was this video two weeks ago when I went on an epic croissant tour of Paris? :P :P (joking aside, your guide was a GREAT reference while I was there, Jay. Thanks!)

There was a croissant I really liked while I was there and there are (were) two places in the US that match the texture of it that I can accept - one used to be a French bakery located in two Las Vegas hotels, and then there's Paris Baguette anywhere else. Definitely inauthentic and I don't like the sweet glaze they put on top, but for a flaky outside and soft inside, I'll take what I can get. Costco croissants absolutely suck.

The one from Cyril Lignac is my favorite.

One of my first Parisian Croissants was somewhere in the Bastille (over twenty years ago) and has left a lasting impression on me. Something so simple but still so complex.
It's such a great way to describe them - they're deceptively simple.
I’ve been enjoying all your videos, and cannot wait to sample some myself when we travel to Paris in spring!! Yum! You’ve been such a help in my planning. Merci beaucoup!!
I think we are all craving croissants now. And yes to jam in the middle! Mostly when it's a fresh and warm one 🤤🤤🤤
I'm pro-jam for sure
My Parisien husband’s favorite croissants were from the now closed Carton on Rue Buci.
I ended up taking a class in Paris on lamination for dough and now make my own.
My husband is extremely ‘eppy because mine are pretty darn good!
Wow that's amazing!
Buying your guide tomorrow. I plan to read it this weekend and take notes for my trip this December. Croissants! Mmmmm

Just a quick thanks for these videos and your guide! Used it to get going on my recent trip to Paris this past December and it was so helpful.

All I can think about when I watch this video is “wahoo… tasting the best croissants in Paris and making comparisons… that’s a job I want!” 😉
I'm on the hunt each time i visit but i haven't found a croissant i like better than Maison d'Isabelle. The holy grail for me!
They've really maintained their standard. I was really happy to taste it.
Croissants for me in 26 days! Yay!

My recommandations : Gamins du faubourg and Urban bakery in the 10th arrondissement. Anthony Bosson in the 5th
Mmmm croissants yum! I’m salivating!
So tasty - so glad I didn't try to do this all in a day 😆🥐
Maison Landemaine Clichy in the 9th and Boite a Pains by Disneyland Paris had the best croissants we ate ❤
Loved the croissants from Carton by Gare du Nord. The lamination on their croissants was incredible, so light, buttery and flaky.
Great video! Do you know Bechu on Ave Victor Hugo?
I don't, but will have to check it out!

Blé Sucre is amazing! This list is the "most hyped" list, and not Jay's personal favorite list - he was testing a vogue list to see if it held up ;)
I saw you in Montmartre yesterday. I wanted to say hi but I was too shy to approach you ☺️

Hi Jay, Have you ever been to Lake Annecy? and what's the best way to get there from Paris?. Thanks in advance
As long as its crispy outside and not too doughy inside, it's a decent croissant
Now I want a croissant 🥐...and a plane ticket. To Paris. 🇨🇵
Bonsoir Jay good vid made me hungry
Croissants in the foreground! Paris in the background! Only one thing missing here … Cooper!
Great video
Thanks!
Is the guide an App?
I am gonna go to Paris next month, and my list of patisserie/boulangerie grows every day!

The level in Paris is unbelievable.
It's true what you say at the end of the video: potentially every croissant can be the best ever tasted, until you eat another one....
Do yourself a favor and buy this guy´s guide! I have it and it´s amazing.
The best croissants are made of air and butter!
and love
The link to your Paris guide is dead. Is it just me?
Bad timing on my part - we had some DNS issues that should resolve shortly. It's working for some people and not for others - hopefully it's back online for everyone soon! Sorry for the inconvenience!
Luis guide Is the best for croissant
haha yes that's a classic
So for your next video do a video of airbnb in different arrondizemonts ..I will charge for this idea
I bought pain au chocolate in Colorado this weekend and it was 5.25 ...not worth it
Oh no miss Poilâne, never ever margarine in a croissant.
I guess your croissants are only made with butter, and the very best
butter quality make the difference 😄
Come to Canada, the croissant cost 4 Euro (6CAD) and sucks! 😅.
Nobody will never beat "luis"
Making the top 5 best croissant while franche was in a middle of a "civil war"
That's a fact
OMG! I didn’t like croissants before I visited Paris. Now back in Aus 🇦🇺 I’m so picky. No bready croissants for me. Our local newspaper had an article about an Aussie comrade who learnt the tricks of the trade at Du Pain et des Idees. She now has a Lune chain in my Melbourne hometown. Now gotta watch this vid again…no hardship. 😁
Wait, I need to know which baker found himself in trouble... lol.
Surprised Cedric Grolet Opera didn’t make the list.
I like a croissant with ham and cheese, hot, so the cheese is melted. Next level. Im sure my French friends may disown me lol. No point in eating one just now though, I can't enjoy it. Im at the no smell, no taste stage of the rona!
One of the brunch spots in my video had a croissandwich and it was gold
I would feel really disappointed if I visited Paris and get a bad croissant. I’m visiting south of France next year and I do expect a perfect one : Period .
Ok, now the real question... Where are the best amandines?
I always find it funny how cultured Americans change the pronunciation of certain words to sound more authentic. The lady at the beginning talks like an American but once she busts out the word croissant it’s like she morphed into someone born in the 5th Arrondissement.
Mm Apollonia Poilâne is French but spent time in America. Hence the combination of accent & pronunciation; she was speaking authentically.

I wish only 2 euros. $4 here for a good one.
American croissant seems to mostly used bleach flour.
