  • Shine Bugs give off light, solar panels turn light into power. So if we ranch Shine Bugs in a clever way in Oxygen Not Included we can build up a ridiculous amount of unlimited free energy! This is a shine bug power plant, but it has gained the nickname sine bug reactor. It literally exploits the 4th dimension.

      he also forgot the fact that he was using TWO bugs instead of just one. this is indeed LOWER then the double placed bugs HOWEVER like you said you can place a third solar panel on the bottom and gain another 3.82w per bug meaning each bug in this tri solar panel setup instead gives 11.46w!!! could be even more as the bottom most panel will actually get more out of the bug then the panels on the sides as more light will hit the bottom most panel then the ones on the sides. this means you need 50%+ LESS bugs to get the same power output as the double bug setup. not only is it more effective but it also condenses the light to only a single spot.

    There is an even more efficient setup where you utilize 3 solar panels and a single spot for shinebugs in between them. It's set up like a top down pyramid, just as your layout with the 2 solar panels and the shinebugs in between them, with a 3rd panel right below the shinebugs. This one is kind of hard to minmax, though, as the lower panel will get more out of the bugs than the other 2, but the whole setup can be stacked in all directions infinitely. Since it all only will cost glass and a little bit of metal, that's not much of a downside, though.

  • @DemainaNyx
    @DemainaNyx 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've always run a 3 solar setup with a critter lure in between them. 2 solar panels on each side and one below with the lure sitting one tile lower than two solar panels. Enclose around the whole setup but leave a waterlock so they don't get confined. Never tested how efficient it was though and I'm sure the box approach would help reduce late game lag.
    For counting them, I don't think you could automate it, but you can use the decor overlay to get a rough estimate. It will say something like "+300 Shine bugs (10) +270 Shine Nymph (9)" so you know there are 19 bugs in that area. Could possibly try to count egg shells from each box but you need to account for the ones in the box dying and laying another egg so don't know the best method for that.

    So I made an "automated shine bug sun power output detector/sensing system" with an automated power diverted to the main grid as each filled. It works, but it's soooo complicated, impractical and massive. Basically I used ceiling lights as a load to draw out a smart battery. The system goes through 4 phases(Charge, Discharge, Sense, Discharge) for a calibrated amount of time using 4 time of day clocks for control. Filling with shinebugs until the charge in the battery was above the set point during the "sensing phase" base off that clock. That signal went to an SR latch(memory toggle) cascade that each output controlled one auto sweeper that picked up the eggs from a mutually reachable container of lower priority and sent them to a loader that individually fed one of the shinebug suns. Out of that same cascade of SR latches, I controlled banks of disconnects to divert power and signals where they needed to go.
    I works, but it's probly better to find a mod or just watch the shinebug suns and when they fill up, just rerun the conveyors. This thing gets messy, and big really fast with all the power and signal diverting, and space for SR cascade and associated filters PLUS the power sensor. Not sure if it holds up at super speeds either. I did 5 solar panels, not fun. Another option, maybe use an SR cascade controlling autosweepers cycled through by a clock sensor each cycle, to fill one "sun" per day, maybe 6 at a time, then just re-run the conveyors when you notice all 6 are full.

    If you mirror one box left-right you can have two boxes share one glass tile and space them closer with the water tiles on the outside, and let you put two boxes offset one from the center of each panel. Makes it more modular/scaleable. Might be able to use one pickup for the eggshells from each pair that way too...

    • @cheerfultrout4381
      @cheerfultrout4381 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually might cause an issue with the door on each overlapping, not sure what to do about that, maybe see if the egg dropper can drop through other tiles and use the door as the division between each conjoined pair of boxes

    Have you tried putting the solar panels on 3 or four sides? You showed it works from the side. Might it be more effective to just use more solar panels at the edge of the first ring since thats where the lux seems to drop off, to reduce the amount of scaling required on the conveyor system.

    At one point(and it might still be the case) for both shinebugs and pacu you don't need to feed or groom them tame. They would still drop an egg and continue on forever.
    You can use those air lures with phosphorous(that never gets consumed) to get a bunch of shines in a single area for free. The area can be open to the outside just fine if not in an obscure far away from the lure way.

    At 20:43, you tackle the problem of too many eggs in the ranch, but try as I might, I cannot get a similar result.
    The auto sweepers clean out the room before the doors block access to the loader. It does not seem to matter which activates first, if the sweepers can access the loader, the doors cant stop them in time before they clear out the ranch. The autosweepers always seem to activate before the final hatch dies, so unless I get super lucky and lifespans are staggered just perfect, the result is a complete extinction for the ranch.

    I think it'd be neat if he went for the later variants, since while they don't really do anything more than the sun bug, they do eventually lead into the abyss and radiant bugs which seem pretty awesome and I'd like to see a super dup base with super shinebugs. What's more is that he could just have them split off after a point without actually taking away from the main generator, build them up in another pen as.. I guess coral bugs? and then swap those ones to a diet to change them into Abyss bugs once he has enough.
    Of course.. I'm fairly aware that Radiant bugs are kinda costly to feed since I don't believe they eat the same stuff every other shine bug eats. But +200 decor.

  • @GLITCH_-.-
    @GLITCH_-.- 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    It would be most efficient to use the three shine bug spots, as you still only need two solar cells but have the same watt-per-bug as with only two. That saves you space and materials.
    You may even get 5 bugs with 7.95W in with three panels, gaining you two bug spots "more". Most watt-per-space and watt-per-panel efficient.

  • @OneOfDisease
    @OneOfDisease 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    i think you need to recalculate, with your final setup you had all the light over exactly 2 panels but when centering the shine bugs 1 cube can bleed light over 3 solar panels and if you have an array of 3 or more solar panels the efficiency will change

    i feel like minecraft could benefit from these lighting mechanics. having a maximum visible light level of 16 is good, but two torches one block apart should make an actual value of like 17 or 18 or some other product of an equation and count down with distance accordingly. that way if you have a circle of torches the area lit to 16 will be considerably larger than the puny distances we have now because the middle blocks will have light values of like 30

    What happens if u place them in a 1x6 tile above and below (stacked like u mentioned)
    Do the solar panels pick up light from underneath them as well?

      If so you could use the cage for the next set as the platform for your solar panels and compress it down pretty good perfect for placing right on the edge of the map straight down the side as far as you need to go

    I bet you'd get 7.95 watts per bug with the initial layout if you had 3 or 4 solar panels, instead of letting some light fall on empty space.

    Can u put the solar panels on glass, and illuminate them from underneath too?
    Edit: oh they build with their own foundation ok. But can light go UP through that foundation from underneath? Prolly not, but i gotta ask

    You could add more panels to the side of the bugs and get more

    Dont know why but after about 50 cycles they stopped emitting light..... I had about 230w on one of the panel, about 170 on the others and then they just stopped. Dont know what causes the problem.

    Cam problems at 8 minutes was probably static build up which you discharged when you touched it. lol

    ... you could use this for farms and terrariums aswell can't you, saves you alot of power. (more than the light can produce?) Think of the savings and efficiancy! :D
