    • @Coldfront15
      @Coldfront15 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Brandon entirely correct. The video comes off as pretentious though, and relies on anecdotal evidence. On another comment he deflected my criticism by saying he has a big unit. Thats not how it works, 100 pennies is equal to four quarters, but the four quarters are more efficient. The video comes off as a “I know everything and this is how you should run a unit because i’m expetienced” when in reality his unit is only a thing because of his YT channel, otherwise it would have burnt out long ago but it keeps pulling people in, I bet you the attrition rate is exponentially higher than most units.

    • @Brandon34098
      @Brandon34098 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i agree about the video it could have been scripted WAY better or not at all in a video form cause feeding trollish comments isnt the smartest thing also could have been written so it wasn't just a lot of words with no real meaning however the angle he takes is when you get a sustained inflow spike where the unit infrastructure cant handle the people coming in you have to swap over to a higher attrition rate style, youtubers in units bring a lot of people who don't think about if they will like the game on its own when they are joining a unit because it has a youtuber in it causing a lot of wasted work for new people who will never play the game again causing existing member burnout if you go with most of the better styles of doing things, when you get to the point where people get trained properly and the exp to handle themselves you have the same end result just takes more people and normally more time all because there is a youtuber in the unit. normal growth allows for the better styles of running a unit building a more solid community when the video covers things it is mostly only the very basics of running a operation although there is a failure of addressing all the exceptions of having fun in the operation when there isnt much going on then there is things you can do with smaller units that you cannot do with a larger organized unit witch this is mostly is aiming at and he fails to state or imply and says the opposite at the start

    It's very interesting what you're talking about with the Zulu mission, Rimmy, with how organized everything was and how easy keeping control is with big and compact line formations - this was actually a huge debate among military theorists and scholars around the early to mid 1800s. Avocacy for open-order formations (scatter and find cover, basically) was increasing with the increasing firepower of modern weapons, arguing that a dense line was no longer feasible as they would just get gunned down instantly. However there was strong pushback for EXACTLY the reason you state in the video: because the soldiers are a helluva lot easier to control when in closed-order formations compared to in open-order formations. When in open order, a soldier could just sneak off whenever an officer wasn't looking, so desertion and insubordnation would be much higher than in closed order.
    Here is a video that Military History (not) Visualised made on the subject: th-cam.com/video/qS6R8A61FR8/w-d-xo.html

      @richardbledsoe1339 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      It's the question plaguing since the revolution Bernhard is discussing there: how much unit cohesion do you sacrifice for tactical flexibility?
      The major answer is certainly the fire team (first employed large scale by the USMC in late WW2 "G-series" organization), multiple small units with a lot of cohesion, but able to operate separately. Ironically, it mirrors those open-order skirmishers of Napoleonic tactics as they could collapse into small groups of 3-5, typically while under cavalry attack. (ACW manuals often mention them as "comrades-in-arms and/or a "mess" or the like).

    • @user-db3ey8sr9d
      @user-db3ey8sr9d 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I don't know about the exact text and lingos like that, but I think with the advent of modern communication technology allowed a transition between keeping a physical formation into a virtual conceptual formation. It's not that the modern armies are in less strict formation, in some ways I believe they are in a tighter formation than they used to. It's just they are able to stretch the definition of what it means to be in formation while still having mostly similar tactical effectiveness.
      They are able to stretch the boundary of what it means to be in "tight formation" by using the technologies to give them a little more legroom to stretch. And well, hopefully be able to save your ass when a grenade is popped in front of your face because you kept proper spacing.
      Actually lets add on to the notion of grenades. Modern weaponry able to create destruction in an area of effect was unheard of during the late times and if there is no technology that breaks the war, then there is no need for them to break the strategy that works. Just as you don't have to account for a game breaking meta, if that meta don't exist. It's not that the previous leaders were wrong or their tactics were any more effective, but they did not have the reason to account for a tactical bomb that can wipe a squadron with a press of a button because it simply did not exist at the time.
      Losing leadership is a big loss, even more so middle of the fight. Allowing the leaders to stay behind and keep giving orders in safety might be the defining reason why a war or a battle is won. However this of course creates some level of detachment that is felt by both the squadron and the leader. However just as the video said some level of unrealism may just be more acceptable than full realism. There usually are never fully perfect solution. Just where you are willing to draw the line. The tide is always changing in war except when it doesn't. It's the reason we sometimes use stupidly old convention while we change some of them like the new hot iphone that will be released every 6 months.
      Back then leadership dies soldiers die and hell breaks loose. It takes too log to regain control of the what is left of the troops. Nowadays they can call in medevacs for casualty control and while the squad will be smaller if they are deemed to in operational capacity, the soldiers will know who to contact to ask for orders and in essence "keep their formation" and also discipline.
      Tl;dr this comment was interesting and I just wanted to pitch in my two cents.

    • @buckplug2423
      @buckplug2423 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is precisely why the quality, cost and discipline of a soldier increased dramatically from the 19th century. Fighting a modern war is a matter of skilled professionals that trust each other, which is one of the reasons all those Middle Eastern conscript armies and militias fight so poorly against an actual Western army. It wouldn't have been a problem if they were fighting in line (at least not that much of a problem). This is obviously a lot different from the warrior, who remains relatively the same throughout millenia (as we see in Afghanistan).

    One method that has worked for me in keeping organization. Always give the people around me something to do and give them a reason WHY we are doing this.
    This works more on the NCO level but has applications higher up too. If I lead a squad of men, unless someone is going out of their way to be disruptive, I can get my men to sit and hold a point and keep it from being too boring. Normally if you just say "sit here and hold alpha." Most people are going to check out in about a minute and get bored. Then they're going to try and "find the fun." Stuff falls apart when people go to "find the fun."
    Now if you say "alright we need to sit and hold alpha because we need to protect 2nd squads flank while they attack Bravo. Look to the north and east." You get people who can hold a point for much longer. They hold it longer because 1. Sitting still is no longer just sitting still. Now they're hunting for incoming enemies. 2. They know it's to protect second squad's flank so they have a reason to stay other than "sarge told me to." 3. If you can tell people what you are doing and why, people think you know a lot and are good at your job. If they think you know a lot and are good at your job they start to listen and give some of their "find the fun" autonomy to you. "Sarge knows what hes doing so I'm just gonna sit here like he says and look for someone to kill in the direction he asked me to." This wont last forever if nothing happens but it helps.
    Also. Once you get them to listen, and if you tell them the right way, you can tell you squad to do stupid stuff like charge straight at machine gun nests and take positions that have armor with no AT. If you're real good they wont even realize they're doing something stupid unless you tell them afterwards.

      Always tell your men why they do something. First because of what he said, second: If all Leaders suddenly die (which happens) some poor Private has to lead the rest, and mostly that Private isnt necessarily an idiot but simply uninformed. If everyone knows the objective they can than accomplish the mission on their own if they keep order.

      So, there was a Steam achievement added when they did a big overhaul update in 2020 (coincidentally when you posted this comment), that was awarded to anyone who booted up the game AFTER the 2.0 update.
      If I remember correctly, around 58% of the people who own Arma 3 have this achievement.
      That means 58% of people who ever purchased or were gifted this game that came out in 2013, have played it sometime between 2020 and today.

    A while back, I was a member of a post-soviet bloc armor PVP unit. For every tank we spawned in, the enemy got an additional vehicle they could crew. Ops were simple. There are enemies on the map. Kill them. Don't die. Single life. Those operations were easily some of the most exciting, and fun, that I've had with any unit. There would be fury-esque situations where your tank has broken down and is no longer capable of operating properly or moving. There are friendly troops coming, but they're far away, and you need to hold that single point.
    Because there are enemies coming. And the objective is very clear.
    You are trapped in situations where there is absolutely no hope of survival beyond the next few minutes, but while you're there, you're having a blast racking up kills and gunning down enemy crews as they bail out of their own fatally damaged vehicles, trying to attack a choke point. Then you get knocked out from the side. Ordered chaos sets in. Vehicles are exploding around you. Shots are ringing out constantly. Smoke, corpses, and disabled vehicles, both yours and the enemies, surround you. Your only goal? Destroy the enemy ahead.
    We never really had problems with disobedience. Due to the fact that the enemy was always players, it wasn't like the Arma AI, who tend to just stand around. If you disobeyed, especially while crewing a vehicle, your commander wouldn't likely have time to kill you, as the enemy would just do the job for them, and destroy the vehicle with everyone inside. As these were PVP players, they understood that not complying means instant death and shame.
    From this simple objective, the best operations came. The most exciting, brutal, fast-paced, and engaging.

    Not only is morale unimportant, but players LOVE to be vastly, hopelessly outnumbered. A good moment in an op is when stuff really hits the fan. One squad remains, they're pinned down, and have lost contact with command and their neighboring squads, who are also either helplessly pinned down, or beong turned into kebabs. The feeling of "shit. We're next. On two fronts" really get the milsimmer senses tingling in a lot of folks, and can ironically raise morale. But only if done right. That last squad HAS to survive for at-least 5 minutes or they'll never play another op with ya.

    13:34 That said, if a person in your squad doesn't follow your commands directly, there's always a reason. You can judge how good it is, but when I command, I usually try to give people a bit of leeway, because they might have a better way to do something. It also might be that they either misunderstood something (if it was complicated), or forgot/didn't hear parts of your directions. Most of the people I play with are either friends or people on Discord, and always do a good job, even if they don't follow orders to the letter. And they know when they need to as well.

    I've been missionmaking for Arma for a long time (less Zeus stuff like Rimmy might usae, more ST-esque) and the Tim to Realism/Gameplay thing is so true,. The thing you can skimp on tends to be like Uniforms. We're blessed to have nerds who actually want to do stuff like be Logi, and that benefits the rest of the operation's players who don't. We've also moved to wave respawning, except in missions where they are told "DIE AND YOU ARE DEAD".
    You also HAVE to know who the competent leaders are. They don't need to be complete losers about it, but SLs and FTLs who won't spend 10 minutes fucking about thinking about an attack or a flank are crucial to keeping things fun.
