Funny thing is, in the 80's when British Alt-pop and dance were so big, we didn't care. At least as far as pop music is concerned, I think we were definitely more relaxed being gay and a singer in the 80s. Seriously, for all the more "openness" that is supposed to exist now, there seems to be far less tolerance of openly gay acts in mainstream pop. Urban or Rap music..oh yeah gay works really well there.Look at all the acts that were on the scene in the mid 80's. Jimmy is a perfect example; both solo and with Bronski Beat and the Communards. So are Andy Bell and Vince Clark from Erasure, Boy George, Haircut 100, Kissing the Pink...the list goes on and on. Peter Burns from Dead or Alive anyone???? Androgynous 80s dance-pop was an easy outlet for a lot of great gay singers...and again most straight 18-20 something's like myself, we didn't care.. we just loved the music!!!
