The reason Conan was set free has to do with the previous scene. The warlord that he and his master had been dining with had said that his greatest fear was that his sons would never understand him. He asks what is best in life, and his son gives him a noble's answer about falconry. But Conan's answer pleases the warlord because it is the mindset not of a rich noble, but of a bloodthirsty conquerer. This is the moment when Conan's owner realizes his creation is outgrowing him - he is destined for greatness... terrible, bloody, violent greatness. And it is only a matter of time before he cannot control him any more, and Conan either kills his master for his freedom, or at best swallows him into Conan's own epic story as a minor character. So his master decides a clean break is best - give Conan his freedom, and get TF away as far as he can, and stay out of the way of what follows.
The attitude Conan gives in his prayer before battle, is exactly what his god, Crom, expects from his people. He gives them their life and the strength and desire to fight and survive. He rarely answers prayers, expecting his followers to do things on their own with little influence from him. But will on occasion give an individual a push in the right direction if he feels inclined to.
No matter how many times I've seen this film over the decades, parts of it still give me chills. Both the themes, and the soundtrack, are amazing and timeless.
Conan is a pulp fiction character created by Robert E. Howard, first appearing in "Weird Tales" magazine in 1932. The character was licensed by Marvel Comics in the 70's and the stories and lore from the comics are considerd as canonical and influential to the public's perceptions of him as the original print stories. Conan is officially part of the Marvel universe, and there are comics where he travels through time to the present and other contemporary characters are sent to the past and he has interacted with The Avengers and other familiar heroes, but most of his adventures take place in this distant past of magic and monsters. "Barbarians" are not a specific race but a general slur used by the more advanced civillizations to describe the less advanced civillizations, originally coined by the ancient Greeks to describe pretty much everyone not-Greek. This story takes place in a fictional era, "The Hyborian Age" 10,000 years ago, 2000 or so before The Classical Greek Civilization. Howard envisioned that before the ancient civillizations we know of began recording history about 5000 years ago, earlier civillizations developed to Iron-age technology before being wiped out by a cataclysmic flood, that would later work it's way into various religions and myth (Noah's Ark, Deucalion's ark, Gilgamesh, The Manvantara-sandhya, etc) and civillization had to start over. The cultures depicted in the movie are mostly Viking and Celtic, along with Middle Eastern, Mongolian, and Japanese. Conan's people are "Cimmerian," a fictional race. Thulsa Doom is from Atlantis, the island kingdom that sank after a massive earthquake (the same cataclysm that may have caused the flood via tsunami) African facial features with light eyes and straight hair represents the Atlantean race that has since gone extinct.
Uhhh I believe that the wizard performed an incantation on Conan of some kind - that's what that writing on his face was supposed to be and why he was swaddled up like that.
1. Conan's mom was a serious hottie!😍😜 2. The first woman he encounters was a witch in the movie and harpy in the graphic novel. 3. Filmed primarily in Spain. 4. James Earl Jones was the MAN😇 5. One of the best endings ever. 6. "Conan the Destroyer" isn't as good, but doesn't suck.
Little boy is Conan seeing his mother being beheaded by Doom (James Earl Jones, voice of Darth Vader) while his henchmen were or are bodybuilding buddies of Arnold's.
Young Arnold was an Austrian weightlifter. Type cast but became governor of California. In the US, even weightlifters can become anything they want. This is different because it is a Central Asian fantasy. Mastiffs were used for bear hunting.
You don’t pray to Crom. It will only make him angry - he gave his people strength of body and will and the secret of steel and that should be enough. He can be moved though, if your situation is truly impossible and you try anyway. That’s why he sent her back to help Conan.
18:55 "do you want to live forever?" "probably not,.. but i don't want to die now!" 😂 i used to collect Conan comic books back in the 80's when i was a kid, this is one of my fav films, i'm glad you checked it out! another great reaction! 👍
Conan have become mainstream popular in the 70s due to Marvel comics. But originally in the 1930s it was a novel , for young urban male adults (20 to 30) who wanted adventure and meaning in life. Underneath Conan's adventure are philosophies in life. The meaning of life. False religion and Riddle of steal. Conan's father believed you could only trust steel. But in the end, he died by the sword. Thulsa Doom (the false religion) believed it's flesh. In the end, Conan cuts his head and shows his blind followers Thulsa Doom is only human. Before he was killed Thulsa Doom asked Conan what would your life be once you (Conan) accomplished your vengeful mission) This is his final attempt to convert Conan. This in turn causes Conan to pause and think. Conan still kills Thulsa Doom to fulfill his vendetta. But Conan later wonders for a while what is his future. What is the meaning of his life now that his vengeful adventure is complete. In the end, the Riddle of Steel is the will to Survive. As the movie tagline says THIEF, WARRIOR, GLADIATOR, KING There is another subtle philosophy -- Valeria"s (the blond warrior/thief). She offered her life to bring back Conan from the dead. In the end, she lived forever as a Valkyrie.
Barbarians is the name given by the Romans to groups of people outside the empire. For them, the speech of those people sounded like "Bar bar bar". The character Conan the Barbarian was created by Robert E. Howard in comic books. He wrote low fantasy stories. 10:48 I am guessing Conan's owner was scared Conan would turn on him. 12:15 Conan does not know what happened the the skeleton's owner, and we do not need to know either. 13:46 Again, we do not need to know. The movie is about following Conan in his quest of vengeance, not to solve a mystery. 16:36 They are running to reach the next city. And Inn. And beer. 18:55 I understood the "Do you want to live forever?" as "Are you afraid of taking risks?", not a literal wish for eternal life. 25:55 Conan is not really ambitious, at least not at this point in his story. He want revenge for his people. 29:13 Yes, the wizard is the narrator. 29:39 The flowers are not women, Conan wants flowers for 1 woman: the princess. 41:00 Conan said nothing because the crew wanted to keep Arnold's dialog at a minimum. They wanted to keep his thick accent out of the way. Luckily, few spoken lines worked for a character like Conan. 41:06 The wizard was very useful, it was his spells that allowed Conan to survive. 42:09 That cauldron contains soup, with human meat. 43:14 Having a leopard instead of a cat is a sign of high status. 47:44 Most humans are afraid of the dark. 54:21 One interpretation is that Valeria became a Valkyrie (characters from Viking mythology) and she helped Conan from beyond the grave. 58:59 We do not know why she bowed. Like many things in this movie, it is open to interpretation. And I love the movie for not explaining everything. 59:36 There is no fixed continuity in the Conan stories. Sometime he became king. That did not happen in the Arnold's movies. 1:01:13 Thulsa Doom transformed into a snake, this is why the snake was dressed in a robe. 1:04:40 Yes, that woman was a witch and it was magic. You are confused? I think Conan was a lot more confused. 😉 The second movie, Conan the Destroyer, changed tone to be child friendly... friendlier. It is a lot less epic and Conan's friends were replaced by comic reliefs. The story is a fetch quest. It is just bad.
Several sounds from this movie, including a few death screams and when he hits the priest and takes his robe were used in the arcade/Sega Genesis beat-em-up "Golden-Axe"
This was after he was winning world bodybuilding championships. There is a film out there of him and Lou F. who shared that background and was known as the Hulk. The film is in a mythical period and it is a series of books and comics that were the source material.
12:00 "Ignore the skeletons of people who died here." "Did the man die on his throne?" "How did they all die here?" This is a tomb. This man on the throne probably was a king, or at least a powerful noble. He probably died at home. He was buried here, perhaps with some of his servants being killed and buried with him to serve him in the afterlife. Instead of putting him in a box, they put him on a replica of his throne with a crown on his head and a sword in his hand.
His owner released him because he felt guilty. He knew slavery was wrong and Conan showed himself to be a decent human being. Btw it wasn't supposed to be dogs chasing him they were meant to look like wolves
I always took it as the master saw Conans potential and thought that keeping him enslaved would be a waste. Or felt fatherly to him since he was the older boy who chained Conan to the wheel. Or a cynical take he saw what Conan was capable of and figured better to free him and be remembered as a kind master instead of someone Xonan would eventually rise up against.
"Barbarian" is a generic term kind of like "foreigner" it's meant to describe people less civilized. To Romans every one else were barbarians, to other cultures Vikings were barbarians
You ask too many questions. It is annoying. The Art of watching a classic movie is to shut up and watch, then comment afterwards. If you keep yapping away, you will not understand the fine details of the scene, character and event unfolding before you.
You spent way too much time talking and way too little time paying attention to details. I don't think you understood even half of what was going on. You seriously never heard of war dogs. or dogs of war? They were a thing. Why do you think so many strong and savage breeds of dog were developed? For fun? The statement Conan makes about what is best in life is attributed to Genghis Khan. Conan makes one of the best off-the-cuff prayers just before the battle in the sand dunes. What young Conan is turning is either a water pump or a grain mill. The girl who jumped into the snake pit was supposed to be the snake’s food. She was a sacrifice. What are they up to? Cannibalism. You didn't recognize Valeria come back from the dead to save Conan? The actor playing Subotai, Gerry Lopez, was a champion surfer. The wizard was played by Mako, a famous character actor. King Osric the Usurper was played by Max von Sydow, a very famous actor. There is no good versus evil in this story, just bad versus worse.
* If you'd like to read about the authentic Conan origin story, read the novel called *Conan* *of* *Venarium* first(he is believed to be 14 years old in that one), and then read *Conan* *the* *Bold.* He is believed to be 16 in that story. It's the one called "Wherever I May Roam". If you listen to the lyrics, you quickly realize that it's definitely a song about "Conan the Barbarian".
When they told King Osric that Subatai had been eaten by lions, the King's reply was misquoted in the subtitles. When Subotai was brought to them Osric exclaimed "A lion's Ahab!". A reference to the story of Captain Ahab who was swallowed by Moby Dick. An impossible reference since that story had not existed at the time.

This is a fiction written by Robert Howard around the 1920's.
Historically there was no Conan.
It's all fiction.
In fact, the writer, Robert E. Howard placed his stories on a much older earth, around 20,000 years ago, and then wrote that there was a giant "cataclysm" (disaster) that ruined the planet, moved continents, cities crumbled to dust, and almost everybody and everything died.
But eventually the earth settled down and new civilizations rose in our history, like those of ancient Egypt for example.
Our history begins there because all records, all knowledge, all evidence, including history, archaeology, anthropology, everything, was lost in the cataclysm.
Which means there is no way for any modern person to know anything about the world, places, or people of Conan's time.

Trivia question : Who are the three seasoned actors in this movie ?
First, there is no "group of people" called "barbarians."
The word simply means "uncivilized".
In the time of Greek or Roman empires, for example, there were these great empires that had cities, roads, centralized governments, strong economies, huge armies, etc.
At the same time, there were other places where people had none of that. They lived in muddy villages with no high quality of life.
The people in the great empires called ALL those other people "barbarians".
Heck, until very recently the people of China and Japan still considered everybody else, especially non-asian cultures, "barbarians".
