Halle bailey had to take acting classes AFTER already being cast. That should tell you enough about her acting skills.

    • @howsie123

@@erikaeric8313I didn't lie. She said it. Halle bailey said it.Look it up. It's not my words, not rumours of anything. She actually said that she had to take acting classes after being cast to learn how to show emotions on her face. Her words not mine.
Also she was technically a child star but she was not Emma Watson. She barely had any lines, she usually always acted with her sister and was basically like her sister's sidekick and her acting NEVER had any dimensions (which is why she couldn't show emotion and had to take classes). She is barely a supporting character, just a random side character with little to no lines. Even in grownish where she was a supporting character, she was basically her sister's sidekick, didn't have dimensions in her acting and basically acted like herself and hence she was outshines by every other supporting character. Even Doug's character had more dimensions than her.
Now it's normal for actors to take classes before acting, in between acting and many actors never take classes at all. But who takes acting classes AFTER already being cast in a SIMPLE ROLE (cause let's face it, Ariel is not a difficult role, it's very simple) for something as elementary as showing emotions after being allegedly being hired for her "talent" in acting. Not someone hired due to talent.
She has no "talent" in acting. She is a good singer but if this is her acting after taking classes then I am afraid she is indeed a sub par actress.

I loved the original Eric because he wasnt a pompus, pussy wipped, prudish prince like all the others. He was so greatly written that his look of discust at his own heroric statue with all the trimmings of royalty immediately told you what kind of guy he was. He immediately went on the offensive and attacked and successfully killed the seawitch for messing with his girl. After the king Tritons downfall and Ariels capture, it was all down to him. Eric was the only disney prince who took part in the leading role in the events of the story and had a character arc of his own. He was kind-hearted, humble, passionate, and brave. A very masculine man.
    They have completely demolished him.

I mean, a big part of his character and role in the story is that him killing Ursula and risking his life for Ariel proved to King Triton that humans could care.
I rewatched it with my dad after learning it was his favorite Disney movie and I was surprised to see that there's alot of lessons aimed at parents in the story.

Poor Walt, must be rolling over in his grave; He's the one who said the "Children should come out of the theatre SINGING their favorite song from the movie." Yipes. Halle does have a beautiful voice; yes but I still haven't heard a melody worth remembering. AND WRITERS CAN'T IMAGINE mermaids without including MEN or a SHIPWREAK?? Singing underwater usually produces bubbles, doesn't it ? Not even a gulp in the soundtrack? If you're going to rehash your own former works, the least you can do is ascertain which items to leave in-instead of deleting them!
FINALLY AN EXCELLENT VIDEO HERE --Someone speaking for " Just---US", in a Most Eloquent Manner, and in English, with greatly descriptive analyzations. EXCELLENT! I've awakened, I am awake. And... I may never understand why someone who was awakened or awoke....could become WOKE.! (Luckily, I can use it because it rhymes with "broke.")
I apologize for not being woke enough to produce original materials that would appeal to Hollywood, and will probably be deemed to be racist; But I HAD to create MY "Little Blue Mermaid" as being " blue", because, unfortunately, logic played a major part in the "reasoning." The reasons behind that decision; Blue is the color that helps mermaids camouflage themselves while swimming in the oceans, so that the sharks can't see them well, and "Melody" is blue because she feels sorry for the Earth People... "Melody has a pet SeaPony, and I should apologize for not terming him a sea horse, so that others can understand from what the SeaPonies were derived(Surfer Boy) .I also apologize for "Melody's melodies, as they are actually appropriate for young children to adapt to, remember and, duh..actually SING.
"LyndaFayeS Little Blue Mermaid" musical for children, with three dimensional characters - And NO stories about sailors; I apologize, again, for coming up with an original story.

  • @RyanEX2000
    @RyanEX2000 ปีที่แล้ว +161

I really hate what they did to the love story between Ariel and Eric. If they wanted to leave out the "love" and make her black they could've just used the Mami Wata, the mermaid from African mythology. Much like Anansi they could adopt almost any telling since, much like European deities her behaviour differed from tale to tale.
The "love" is vital component in The Little Mermaid since, in the original tale, she DOESN'T win the prince's love. The original Disney animated followed it up to the prince meeting another woman, but instead of the mermaid winning back his love, he announces he's marrying the other woman and the mermaid throws herself back into the water to die.
It was especially heartwrenching since it stated that every step felt like she was walking on knives and she was dancing for him, in the hope he'd recognize her.
Also, I could've played a better Sebastian. That was one of the reasons I got into my guild when I played World of Warcraft. During the test raid I ran, the second I started talking on Skype people started saying I sounded like Sebastian and pestering me to sing Under the Sea...which I caved and did. But only after we killed Illidan for the first time :D.
Also, that's not a Caribbean accent. It's an exaggerated JAMAICAN accent. But don't feel bad, we know most think we all speak like that.

He was not the typical spoilt prince, instead he was the kind that got along with the common folks while irking the upper crust with his behavior. You see this in his reaction to the statue and the talk about his failed arranged marriage.
He thinks for himself and isn't prone to giving into the whims of others. Which makes Ursula taking control of his mind particularly nasty.

It was part of his personality that he was shy which has kiss the girl have more importance. They need to push him to kiss her because she wants him to kiss him, leans in closed her eyes, lips out and he hesitates! Then the song and getting her name from Sebastian breaks his shyness. Plus the dumbassery of the oh you forget this contract (ARGHHHHHH! Who would sign a contract knowing you’d forget about it. If they are trying to FIX (the almost perfect OG) that is not it! No one would sign a contract knowing it is entirely rigged.) It sucks. I’m not hating on you man if you enjoy it go ahead but please don’t think the backlash is undeserved with the butchering of the original. If they had kept to the original to a T (and in animation) and just improved Eric slightly like you’ve said cause sure he could’ve been better. Im sure people would’ve loved to see it again as it was. Cause I’ll agree yeah he wasn’t 10/10 but he was an 8 or 9 but that doesn’t excuse the girl boss crap that undermines his character and his character’s end development of risking his ass to save Ariel from being SMITED and proving to Triton (another issue altogether as he was THANOS’D when in the original he takes Ariel’s place on the contract. Plus Triton’s character is just bad in general just snaps whereas the original had reason and even him feeling guilty and even asking Sebastian if he was being too harsh!) that humans aren’t all that bad and coincidentally getting Triton to let his youngest daughter go and be happy.

1989 LM is a colorful, well paced and overall catchy film, that while different from the original tale is changed with purpose to make a complete artistic vision with it's own message. It is coherent on many levels. This I can say about most all classic Disney films whether I like them or not, with only some exceptions like The Black Caldron. None of these things were done in this 2023 version, or in most LARs.
This movie is dark and generally ugly, overly long, with no clear message or artistic direction that makes at best a mid-film that will satisfy the tasteless who are pleased with everything, but offer not even the pantomime of substance as the 89 version does. Changes are made to the narrative, but the rest of the story is not refit to account for these differences even though they shift both the tone of the events and the characterization of it's leads. Small changes make big differences in the overall feel and message of each scene which compound into big problems.
And to make it worse they cast a controversial main lead purely for marketing purposes and have the nerve to make a movie that is incredibly unflattering to her, highlighting neither her talent or beauty. Change her--fine. Ariel is just a character from a film that did not adapt the source material very well to begin with (which I don't think is a flaw by the way, the HCA story is not very compelling IMO, it is overly angsty and lacking in contrast and narrative weight because of it. The best part is the sea witch, which the 89 version captured the character of well). But like every other race change, the new character is not as beautiful or charismatic as the original, which is of no fault of the actors but the writing and directing. Good actors do as their told, and she was not told how to do this role well by the script, the CG director, the music director, or the main director.
Those who this comment was originally meant for that I won't waste the words on, but will still post for the algorithm, do not seem to understand the value of fairy tales, or stories in general, with how quick they are to dismiss criticism of so called "children's media" by saying it is for children. Even though this media is explicitly for families not children. And by families, they mean to say a movie for everyone and anyone--the whole of the human family. These stories are meant to appear simple, but become deeper and more meaningful the more thought is put into them, and often as the stories grow with us through life we can see what wisdom was hidden in them all along.
But is it the worst movie of the year, probably not. But to me it is worse because of that. If it were unspeakably bad, full of in-your-face propaganda which spoke loudly what it was to everyone, then it would be something unique. This is just another bland piece of new Disney, which walks around saying anything while correcting things that were "wrong" before, and by doing that the Disney overlords who approved every frame of this ugly excuse for a movie tell us exactly what the purpose of these films are--and it's not just making money.

The biggest thing I hate about this movie is how boring it looks. Animation will always be superior to live action as there is literally nothing you can't do with animation. The Little Mermaid isn't my favorite Disney movie by any stretch but I can respect that it's animation is gorgeous to look at and clearly visually impressive as well as that it took a lot of work to make, which is why so many people loved it and continue to love it.
Live Action Little Mermaid looks like every other Live Action movie with obvious CGI sets, props and even water. If a live action Little Mermaid was made in the 90s they'd atleast show scenes under actual water and at actual locations so even if it didn't look as good as the original you can at least say it looks impressive because of the sets, props and locations. But Disney doesn't even attempt to do that much, just CGI everywhere.

I still remember when in middle school we were studying the history of animation and we compared the little mermaid with Cinderella and Snow White and how the animation evolved from stiff, simple animation to the fluidity that Ariel hair had, especially in the underwater scenes. I love to see that evolution, but now it's like we're evolving just backward. Like we know from James Cameron's Avatar 2 that cgi water scenes can be done splendidly, yet Disney gave us a dull ocean that didn't look like it was made for children at all. I didn't mind that much the actress for Ariel, since talent isn't something basen on your skin color, but seeing how she lost the iconic red color I felt sad, like a piece was missing. I'm sure I might not be the only one saying this, but the movie could have been better if politics stayed out of the picture and idk maybe do original stories instead of repurpose a franchise that ended well and should have stayed in our childhood memories

19:29 The one you can't remember is the telepathic song she sings when she is supposed to be mute, "For the First Time." That one is pretty ridiculous to be honest. She knows what gravity and corsets are but still calls forks dinglehoppers for some reason. It seemed to me that she was so bad at portraying emotion with no voice, they had to insert the only thing she was good at, singing. It is also pretty funny that for the whole song she just keeps saying "Look at me!"
28:30 I'm no sailor but I have watched videos about it before. And what they show Halle Bailey do would not have worked. In order for a ship to go straight, you have to turn the wheel back and forth constantly, especially in choppy water like that. Eric demonstrates that in the cartoon. Bailey just tosses the wheel to one side. The ship would have probably just kept spinning before falling into the vortex.
28:49 That scene where they are talking to the Queen, she actually says "Our worlds has misunderstood one another for far too long. Your marriage marks a new beginning for us." So they do actually get married. It is just off camera and a throw away line because they can't celebrate marriage in front of "modern audiences." Lol

Oh, good! I'm not the only one who noticed Ursula just watched the ship come her way/did nothing to stop it from killing her. XD
Ariel saving the day is a blatant Mary Sue moment - given 1) she had never sailed a ship in her life; so would have no idea what a helm was for. 2) had no legs to stand on (which are needed to brace oneself when steering a ship 3) just spun the helm in one direction and didn't need to keep it on course (it just magically stayed on course, despite the violently choppy seas and no one manning the helm) and 4) Ursula's dimbulb moment as she stupidly watched the ship plow its way towards her and did nothing to knock it away from her.
How is anyone rooting for Ariel's girl boss moment when it's just that stupidly written?

In the original, another detail is that eric is constantly fighting the current of the FUCKING GIAN ASS VORTEX, you see him struggling to keep a carcass en route towards ursula, it is a moment of tension because you fear for ariel whom, the scene was a back and forth, eric saves her (when ursula is about to attack her he yeets the harpoon), she saves eric (by redirecting ursulas blast), she helps him out of the water before he suffocates, he saves her by impaling ursula, this moment shows both as badasses who are in love with each other so much so that a cecaelia who just became the goddess of the oceans doesn't scare them into paralysis, but instead makes them willing to risk their lives for each other, this movie is shallow as fuck, there is NONE of that here, who was ursula even focusing on?!

      @@michelecastellotti9172 The ship, clearly!
Maybe Ursula was stupefied by the fact that a mermaid with no sailing experience (and no legs to keep her steady, even if she did) was trying to sail a ship, that it caused her to mentally snap at the stupidity of it all and was unable to react in time to save her own miserable life (Hell, makes more sense than just thinking she stood there and watched the approaching ship just because there was nothing better for her to do).
The fact that Ariel accepts credit for killing Ursula is bad enough (because just watching the scene shows it was entirely based on dumb luck rather than any skill whatesover on Ariel's part); but the nerve of Ariel to tell Triton that Eric helped in taking Ursula down when the most he had done was throw a harpoon at her before getting ensnared in ropes shortly thereafter was just adding insult to injury. And Triton, the colossal doorknob that he is, accepts her at her word.

The thing that bothers me the most about the lyric change is the lyric “if the time is right and the time is tonight.”
Uh Sebastian? THE DEADLINE IS TOMORROW. Why are you acting as if you have time to be like “oh well if the time is right, then it’s fine.” You don’t have time to be timid about this when Ariel’s life is on the line. And it also makes no sense because the rest of the song is the same with the urgency but that lyric is like “oh we should be considerate of the time and see if it’s right…” BRO if we don’t get this guy to kiss her, she is basically going to die tomorrow. We don’t have time to treat like this like a vacation itinerary.
And also it just drags on for so long. It’s like listening to a complete slog. Kiss the Girl was my favorite song after Under the Sea so this just sucks.
ALSO by removing the best musical part of poor unfortunate souls, you are missing the point of what Ursula is doing. And what is she doing? She is MANIPULATING ARIEL BY FEEDING HER FALSE INFORMATION. It has nothing to do with the movie’s opinion of women. It has to do with Ursula taking advantage of Ariel’s naïveté by falsely telling her losing her voice won’t matter when obviously it’s the obstacle keeping Eric from recognizing her.
God these people are so fucking stupid.

And obviously you have to tear it all down, its right in the instruction manual. Can't replace what's there until it's gone, and then you install your own structure in the vacuum that's left. Same reason the Soviets and Chinese tried very hard to destroy the existing cultures and traditions. There can only be The State, no distractions. Jodi Benson clearly sounds like she's trying to be as expressive as possible and the animation really plays up how dynamic Ariel is both in expression and energy. Halle Bailey might be able to sing, which even then I doubt somewhat thanks to countless forms of audio editing, but when she acts, she constantly sounds like she's half asleep or phoning it in.
And people are trying to say this is better than an animated Disney Classic.

please. now i know the people in this comment section are racist because you could’ve picked anything to have a problem with and you choose her SINGING? 😭 firstly, she has sung the songs completely live and sounds just as incredible. secondly, halle is a better singer. obviously i’m speaking in terms of technical ability, it’s ur opinion which voice u prefer, but vocally she has better range, pitch, colour, tone etc. thirdly, obviously this is a subjective opinion but acting like there was no expression in her voice is insane to me. her vocal performance of part of your world was far superior as she did a much better job of conveying the longing ariel has to be human with the powerful notes jodi could not hit.
as i said, you can prefer whichever voice you want but stating that the difference between jodi & halle is night & day is just laughable. i don’t even think you genuinely believe that yourself. i personally wasn’t a fan of the movie so i watched this video expecting an unbiased review - not this ‘woke people are taking over waah’ drab whining. the comment about doubting her ability based on audio editing yet not holding jodi to that same standard was so nasty & mean spirited.

I'm still trying to figure out what was the point behind Ariel singing 'Part of that World' when Ariel had never once ventured to the surface prior to spotting Eric's ship sailing overhead, which only happened 'after' she sang her song on longing. How is she pining for a world she's never seen/experienced first hand - especially considering she was raised believing humans are cruel creatures who destroy their precious coral reefs with their shipwrecks and murdered her mother (why would anyone pine to be part of a world like that?).
At least in the OG story, she was fascinated by the stories her sisters would share about their respective trips to the surface (which made her eager to see it for herself) and the '89 animated film had her sneaking off to spy on humans/learn more about them prior to spotting Eric's ship (she was naturally curious and disobeyed her father's rules on numerous occasions - given how he scolds her/reminds her of the dangers of the human world). In this one, she's pining for a world based on the trinkets she finds in the shipwrecks?

    No.
Don't hold back, when an actor or actress signs a contract for a movie they are making a commitment to at least try and be passable because they are capable of acting.
And if the actress was capable, then I'd hold no issue, if this were a commendable actress who can sing (I far smaller group honestly) then I'd wholly blame Disney no matter who it was. For instance, a lot of people say Jude Law in LAR 17 was the only good part and they're right, I don't blame him for the bad film, he did the best he could with what he had.
But Bailey didn't think of the truth that she wasn't capable of doing this role, she just saw the zeroes attached to the role, the exposure of her voice and the ability to then claim racism when people don't like her.
No quarter given to those who choose roles they're not capable of fulfilling.

The Little Mermaid is my favorite movie ever since a child. I’m that dork that has been collecting everything since then and not ashamed to say I still do. It was the 1st movie I saw in theaters with my mom. I watched it nonstop to the point mom had to replace the vhs multiple times lol. It’s because of Ariel I began to sing and have been all my life. Music is my ‘voice’.
When I saw they were swapping her for this ‘modern audience’ I was was enraged. I don’t care about identity nonsense but I care about the memories. That’s what they want to destroy. Ariel was fascinated with the human world before Eric thus her cave of treasures. However it was her falling in love and her rebellious nature against her father who loved her deeply and wanted to protect her that pushed her to Ursula. She was already a strong willed, adventurous beautiful soul that was trying to find herself. She wasn’t trying to be a stupid feminist!
I absolutely refuse to see this LAR ! Seeing the countless reviews of the disaster they created truly saddens me. Just the snippet of Part of your world sung by her grate’s me! That song along with the entire original soundtrack are iconic and beautiful. They want to destroy that too. They changed the entire feel, the story of finding herself, Eric being a wonderful man seeking love who is willing to fight to save her showing the King he is worthy of her hand. I could go on forever, but as a woman who grew up as a Disney girl in 80’s n 90’s it’s vile what Disney is doing. It isn’t showing girls how to be strong or ‘girl power’ crap! It’s showing men as horrible and weak. It’s telling girls they don’t have to learn, grow or struggle, that they don’t need anyone and as said here that marriage and family is bad! It’s destroying the reality of life by trying to brainwash children and it’s evil.
I hope Disney collapses and real story tellers rise from independent areas and bring beauty back to it. I appreciate the refusal to call this disaster the Little Mermaid, its definitely not at all!
Best review I’ve seen! And thank you for sharing the song beautifully sung by the group!

I totally agree with you. Wonderfully said!!! I'm a p.o.c and refused to watch the new Little Mermaid. It feels dark and not as vibrant as the original one did. Disney should've made a new princess movie of African origin and culture.
I'm a huge fan of the Little Mermaid, and Disney butchered it with this whack and drown out live version of it. Halle Bailey cannot act, isn't pretty at all, and weird looking. She is soulless in this movie.

Aquafina is what happens when you have someone with no talent try harding to be a rapper and funny. Somehow she has been typecast as the annoying friend nobody really likes. Movies do have a habit of drafting talentless popular rappers into the film to leech some fans. And I am STILL amazed at people saying the "Scuttlebutt" was not that bad when it fails on so many levels.
It fails on lyrics because "scuttlebutt" is the title for the water barrel used as the water cooler on a ship. So when she says "Have you heard the Scuttlebutt?" its like someone saying "Have you heard the water cooler?" Second it talks about "when the humans dress up as Penguins?" which references Tuxedos. Firstly, nobody would know what penguins are and secondly Tuxedos are not invented in this time period. So its trying to use modern word play in a classic setting. Like if I talked about watches in a medieval movie.
It fails on the voice, which sounds like a grandma who has chain smoked since age 4.
Even the other characters in the song dislike her.
And yet, people are in SO Much denial that the princes song is worst.

We need a sequel. No, I'm not drunk.
In the sequel Ariel and Eric go on a business trip instead of a honeymoon, and although neither of them is the brightest candle in the chandelier they quickly realise after living closely together for a week, that they're not a match, and what ensues is the adopted transmother of all anti-romcoms.
    - Eric is adopted, so he values the concept of a healthy happy family. His new wife ran away from her obviously pretty promiscuous, quick-tempered dad (all of his "daughters" look like they have different mothers and he does have violent outbreaks in front of her), and Ursula (as Triton's sister and thereby Ariel's aunt) was exiled from the family and tried to kill her.
    - What will the kids look like? And I'm not talking about skin colour. Given that they can breed at all (and that feminist Ariel is willing to), will her DNA show in the babies? Is she going to lay eggs? Will they have gills, fishtails or tentacles when they hatch? This is the... what, 18th or early 19th century? You can still be burnt as a witch or a demon in some places. In real life, the last woman who was accused of being a changeling in Scotland was born around the year 1910, and her village wanted to burn her when she was only a few months old. She was lucky and lived to give a TV interview.
    - Ariel may be an underwater princess, but she's very anti-patriarchy, so Eric being a prince is going to pi$$ her off. And he probably eats fish and other seafood pretty regularly. Knowing neo-Marxist morons like her, she won't forgive him that his species killed her mother, and she will absolutely try to destroy the land monarchy - just compare this to Harry Harkle and his Instagram loving b1tch wife, which btw, is a far more interesting story.
    - The whole setup is weird (and it already was in the animated movie, but it got much weirder): It's a Danish tale, so we're talking about the North Sea or Baltic Sea, but Triton is a sea god from Graeco-Roman (= Mediterranean) mythology. Ariel was originally the name of a male air spirit (and as such he features in Shakespeare's play "The Tempest") from Jewish lore (and it's the name of a German washing detergent, that works with oxygen bubbles). Now we don't just have a Mediterranean father and daughter of two vastly different ethnic and mythological backgrounds, who somehow made it to Danish waters - we've complicated the whole thing by taking them to a colonial Caribbean setting.
I could go on about the actual trans subtext, that Hans Christian Andersen (the early 19th century author of the original fairytale) DID intend, about his non-Caribbean inspiration for this specific mermaid and her troubles, or about the fact, that Disney race-swapped a white character, although there is a perfectly good West African mermaid named Mami Wata, that they could have made a movie about... but I've already done that in other comments.
This needs an ugly break-up murd*r sequel.
