I'm not a S and C coach but I really like your approach of asking yourself the opportunity cost of doing something, sounds obvious but most people don't do that! I did judo for 21 years and I competed internationally, I can confidently say that most people waste thousands of hours of hard work. I quit because I felt no progression and I started researching the nature of my sport and the underlying principles of sports performance, I "studied" technique just by watching videos and I dropped into a class after 2 years of doing essentially nothing (I was totally burned out by the blood and guts approach over many years) and I threw around everybody better than I used to do when I was in top shape. I was sore for a week, but I was shocked. Combat sports are still done at an amateurish level. We did so many useless things, or maybe not useless in themselves but with nonsense programming and the technical aspect was negligent. Just old school sweat and blood. This still goes on at the highest levels of combat sports.

I play rugby league and same thing with Rugby, all the coaches try to run you into the ground. I got my best gains with a newer coach who focuses on the right drills rather than running us to death.

If a traffic lights red, then the traffic lights red doesn't matter if Joe Rogan says it's green you have two eyes and a brain use them and observe. Don't be a sheep because of someone's status/merit now. If you later get told its use and try yourself to see it works great, that's amazing. But a spades a spade even if Jon Jones calls it a dildo maybe it works great as a dildo I've never tried, so I wouldn't know. But you've got try for yourself before you blindly believe, if the results equal what was advertised that's great. But if something looks and sounds stupid, it likely is stupid. Maybe it's works great, and you're stupid. But you won't know till you attempt it yourself. If it walks like a Duck talks like a Duck and quacks like a Duck, it's a Duck. But hopefully, we find out soon it isn't.

Tom Aspinall is visiting here Rico Verhoeven in the Netherlands. Rico is ranked number one heavyweight kickboxer in the world since 2014 and it is a part of Rico's training. Guess it works out for him very well.

However, you can theorise that it helps him in some way because he is number one. I do get what you mean, though. What I will say is that it looks like fun. And there's nothing wrong with bringing a little fun in to the equation.

Awesome breakdown, Its funny even at the higher levels they end up confusing skill work with conditioning or skill work with reaction time etc.
Flashing lights end up being a specific skill that wont transfer to mma or striking.
What do you think of project total conditioning and HIT for combat sports?

I agree these look like mostly a waste of both fighters time, if only for the fact that they clearly won't be doing this throughout their training camp, its likely a one off deal for them.
But fighters like lomochenko have suggested that exercises similar to like this can translate into faster decision making and better coordination.
No one's opinion matters without research.
