Dude that's so amazing! 🔥🤘🏻 Let's talk about tracking drums, that sounds like a cool project! Also a little more insights into how we wrote this: The drums are programmed and we didn't "think" about this groove. We started out with the guitar intro and played the drum groove over it on our midi keyboard by instinct because it felt like the right feeling for this "riff". We didn't analyze what was really going on until later, haha
ohhhhhhhhhhh I'm so down. Also, yeah I don't claim to know how you guys got to do it, I just analyze the result hahahaha I'd love to track whatever you guys need !
I'd never heard of this artist, and I'm really liking them! Thanks for the video! On a completely unrelated note, my first concert was The Contortionist with God is an Astronaut.
Great video!!! At 3:15 the length of each clean guitar note changes to 3/16 (4/16 before) and plays it 22 times so 3*22=66 quarter notes length for the clean guitar pattern. BUT at 3:32 we now understand that the length of the clean guitar pattern follow a simple 4/4 drum so 4*16=64 quarter notes so it's different than 66, 2 quarter notes are missing in the clean guitar pattern. That's where the trick is, the guitar doesn't repeat 22 times 3/16 notes but 20 times 3/16 and twice 2/16 (3*20+2*2=64) ! :) PS : I'm doing a PhD in math and music and I really love your videos 🤘
Habibi, I don't know what I enjoy more - your brilliant insight on the music, or your clever video production and humor. You're a real talent. Kol hakavod achi.
If you ever get the chance you should try doing one of these breakdowns on a Car Bomb song. Their rhythms are always insane and constantly fluctuating.
this song crept into my spotify discover weekly list a few months ago, it has since become a mainstay in my playlist. Fun to see you having a go at it, and thanks ofr explaining those "random" hits
Used to listen to this album all the time. Very happy to see this here I knew they played live for a while without a drummer, and thought the drums were programmed on this album. Yogev said exactly what was on my mind at 11:00
Absolutely love the vid as always! So excited to hear more people talking about this band. The breakdown at the end of "Wildfire" by them is completely mindbending and insane too and could make a good video at some point!
I found TDWA some time earlier this year, I think, when I looked up "polyrhythms" on a whim on Spotify. The Contortionist was the first one on the first playlist I saw. Immediately fell in love, and now they're probably my top favorite band, which is saying something.
@@YogevGabay Athazagoraphobie by Ni. With Bisbâyé you could basically pick one at random, but Le Sens De La Fin (from the recent album of the same name) is particularly wild!
@@AidanMmusic96 I checked both of these bands out. Ni is cool and I will listen to them more. Bisbaye has awful production and it is almost unlistenable.
At the song's 3:15 mark, the clean (?) guitar is playing constant 2 bars of 11/4 in 8th notes. BUT the 2nd bar is extended to a 13/4 with the crazy synth part starting from 11 for 3 quarter notes. The distorted guitar is playing in a 3-3-5 fashion in the 11/4 bar with the 3 being accented at 1 & 2 and the 5 accented at 1,2, 3 & 4. Hmmm I might've overexplained.

that intro riff is totally random and has no rhythmical logic behind it 😂 it was improvised on synth to a click when we wrote it we learned it by practising it a million times.

Amazing video as usual!!! And this band sounds amazing, I knew their name but never listened to them (tbh I thought it was a parody band of God Is An Astronaut)
At the tail end of the beginning guitar riff, where the 16th notes are 3+3+2, could that also be heard as a quarter note triplet cell on beats 3 and 4?
Great video as always. the song is super cool and Tom is hilarious! BTW, is the Guest vs. Host system something you invented or is it a global term that all musicians know ? Thanks!
The part at 3:15 somehow feels triplet-ish but at the same time does not… Maybe it‘s 4/4 sub-divided into 5 but still every 4th note is played??? I don‘t know, my brain is fried and I’m gonna sleep now… Really nice video though, thanks for making my…. „evening“(1am with alarm at 7)
I might not be able to explain it best but triplets should be evenly spaced out. The space between the last note and the downbeat is much shorter than the previous notes. Try to play 9 notes in those 2 *beats trying to match the accents, you'll find the last 2 notes have to be rushed. (RLL RLL RLL)
@@cymapsis Quarters, but it wouldn't really matter for this specific thing. The issue is the note spacing, triplets are completely even whereas this figure is 3+3+2. At high tempos they do sound very similar (honestly I heard it as a triplet too until he pointed out the actual subdivision) but they're different enough that if you play one while everyone else is playing the other it'll sound extremely messy.
@@cymapsis quarter note triplets and dotted 8ths are are a fraction of a space apart, so it sounds tricky. I would recommend to slow it down and try playing 16th notes with the dotted eigth accents, and and then compare to eigth note triplets playing quarter triplet accent.
I have a theory. It's training to not drop sticks while playing. Alternative theory: all drummers have ADHD and can't handle the boredom of not hitting something with both hands the entire time. Just a theory.
The part in 3:15 is technically very similar to the intro, just with shorter notes, so it's not 4/4 with the melody in 4/16ths over drums in 5/16ths but 4/4 with the melody in 3/16ths over drums in also 3/16ths, which is clear in the part after when the melody stays in 3/16 but the drums play in 4/16 (with the kick drum combining both host and guest side). Now I kinda miss 4/4 with the melody in 3/16ths over drums in 5/16ths...
