One of the best days of my TV watching life was discovering Johnny late one night in the 60's and being hooked ever since. I STILL say you could put him on NETWORK TV late night and he would still beat the others to a pulp.
Dave certainly followed suit when he retired by sending Kimmel a box filled with ALL of Dave's ties(which Kimmel, of course, absolutely treasures) and by sending Conan a live horse.....right to his studio lot.
Back in 1986, that truck could be considered a piece of crap, as Johnny called it at the end. Nowadays, however, that truck is a classic and worth some pretty good coin. The best part -- No computers and very easy to maintain and repair. A few years ago, we sold our 1976 Chevy C-20 for $1200 to someone who was gonna refurbish it again -- not bad for a 40-year old truck that was in daily use up until it was sold. Surprisingly, all these years later, replacement body parts and engine components for these trucks are relatively easy to obtain. This style of truck was produced by General Motors for 18 years to the tune of several hundreds of thousands made, thus the demand for replacement parts is strong and suppliers continue to keep them in stock. It might even be possible to build one of these trucks entirely from sourcing replacement parts (tho, of course, severely expensive and time-consuming to do). I am sure there are many folks out there who now regret trading in their old C/K trucks for newer ones or not keeping and repairing those that got smashed up and instead bought new trucks. These old trucks have strength and reliability that newer trucks simply don't have.
One night, some friends took me up into the Hollywood Hills to show me Robert Blake's house. There was a pickup truck on the front lawn with the engine next to it. Robert called it "yard art".
Great stuff and simpler times. It is the 9th of November 2024 and I am a dispirited 70-year-old. Bring back the 80s: synthpop, padded shoulders, incredible hair, possible nuclear amageddon, great TV.
I remember watching this episode that day. All my Friends Loved David , and you Kids don't realize that Johnny was the BEST late night talk show host EVER. Johnny knew when to crack a joke , and when to SHUT-UP and let his Guest talk.
I, so, remember this!(I was 25.) It was, really, entertaining. What I recall, most, though, was that I'd just purchased a navy double-breasted blazer. The day after this show aired, I went out and, bought a white/burgundy striped dress shirt and, a burgundy tie. Mr. Carson was a sharp dresser! Oh-something, I recall, also. It was David's last visit, in Mr. Carson's final week. Not sure how many viewers heard it, as the audience was applauding, at the time. Johnny: "Hey, thanks, for coming on. David Letterman!" David: "Thank-you, for my career." Classy!
The reason why Dave had that truck at his house was because he lived out of it when he first moved to California to start his comedy career. He still has it today.
I remember when this happened but I could have sworn that when they opened the curtains there were a couple of leggy models standing next to it. Funny what time (and other things) can do to a memory.
Almost forgot what a real truck looks like. ALL metal parts except the grill. Metal bumpers, metal bolts attatching everything...wow! Trucks now are like a Cadillac with a truck bed. Nice!
I never saw this before. I just love how much Johnny loved pranking David. Legendary stuff.
Two legends. It doesn't get any better than this.
Conan And Letterman, Letterman and Norm, Norm and Conan = Even better in my opinion
@@Shan2TheBoner1987 nah that's ok though
@@Shan2TheBoner1987 Norm's fans everywhere, count me in!
Gotta put Conan on this list.
Conan, Letterman, Carson.
I still miss Johnny to this day. He made late night TV worth dragging ass the next day at school and work later on in my life.
I was in grade school but my mom used to keep me up late at night to watch Johnny Carson -- a continuation of when I'd watch Jack Paar with her.
I wish I was alive to see him live or meet him. I was born too late too I watch all his reruns and every episode of every season I can find. His monologue is always entertaining
That truck is actually the same one Dave drove from Indiana when he first came to LA. I think he still has it.
You don’t know crap about what you’re talking about
@@tomtom6319 Why? Did you drive with Dave to California?
@@tomtom6319 Actually he is 100% correct.
Dave has since had it restored and drives it in his retirement to this day.
You are correct.
He has since restored it.
Saw a interview that he drives his wife and son in it where he lives in Indiana.

These two men are so different in many ways, but they share a gift for finding comedy in the smallest places.
What a perfect way of saying it, I’m too young to have watched Johnny, but Daves humor is insanely understated and unexpected
I STILL miss Johnny and now Dave. The new guys could really learn a lot from these two. Johnny was and always will be the King of Late Night.
Uh, I'm so old I remember watching this when it first aired. Still so funny.
now I feel old , at 51
*Early 80s ???*
Sigh. You're not the only one.
+MIZORAM: Hey, old people watch You Tube.
Good Lord , it wasn't that long ago you Gen X snowflakes.
Before my time, and I'll love this bit forever. Never saw Dave more uncomfortable. So good.
Johnny Carson will always be the king of late night talk shows!!!!!!
Classic comedy from two giants. Likely not to see this level of talent again, though we can hope.
Kimmel's got potential. Time will tell.

Dave was good until he became a liberal shill.

Too f-ing classic!
Lordy, Lordy, Lordy, I sure miss Johnny! Never be another...
I STILL remembering seeing this ep first aired when I was staying at my aunt house in NYC in 86. God this brings back memory.
About a month later they both had a trial with Judge Wapner residing because the truck was damaged when it was towed. That was great too.......

OMG...I remember watching that as a high school kid! Man, Johnny was the best!!!
Stealing Letterman's truck was such a great and funny thing to do.
During college--this was my senior year and I remember it well--Carson and Letterman were required viewing.
I remember watching this. Very funny. I miss them being on TV.
Thank you for posting. I miss this caliber of late night TV so much!
Miss Johnny to this day. Stinking hilarious.
The only two talkshow host that I loved.
Great to see that you guys are uploading again. Its been too long!
One of many great times those two had together.
I saw this live. One of the greatest pranks ever.
back when talk shows were genuine and funny.
Conan is funny.
+Prakhar Narang Conan is the best. i don't watch the others.
+Prakhar Narang compared to everyone else is not saying much
Craig Ferguson was funny.
Conan is smart. All of the other shows suck pretty bad.
Johnny can never be duplicated.
Damn, time's flying.. one's dead, other one's retired!
Johnny will never truly die.
Father Time is back interviewing folks again, shaggy beard and all.
Never another like Johnny!! So many HS nights I stayed up until 11:30 watching him!!! WOW!!
Dave certainly followed suit when he retired by sending Kimmel a box filled with ALL of Dave's ties(which Kimmel, of course, absolutely treasures) and by sending Conan a live horse.....right to his studio lot.
And Kimmel pulled out his trusty tissue box.
That truck looks like hell for being only 13 years old at the time. I guess those Indiana winters are tough on vehicles.
As a Hoosier, it’s taxpayer funded rot from brine and salt for snow.
Ain’t that a kick in the head?!
We pay for the state to rot our stuff.
Johnny has been off the air almost as many years that he was on the air with the Tonight Show.
I'm a Letterman fanatic and I don't remember this clip! Pure gold.
This was from 1986.
A Hollywood Reporter article about legendary "fixer" Brad Herman brought me here.
I'm amazed that I had never of this bit before.
This clip is balm for the soul...can't believe it's been over 30 years, but it's as funny now as it was then.
That's called a "polaroid"👌

I think he still owns the truck today and is restoring it
It was restored.
+Scott Summerour I thought so, I see the episode of letterman with Danny Koker from counting cars. He was talking about restoring the car on there.

Johnny was great. Would also love to see Freddie Prinze's very first time on the Tonight Show for sure. :)

I saw the wapner segment before I saw this 1st....soooo funny..u can tell Dave is embarrassed when u see his truck on stage....
Johnny had a soft spot for Dave. The two were good friends.

The reason why Dave had that truck at his house was because he lived out of it when he first moved to California to start his comedy career. He still has it today.
For the few that don't know, this led to the great court case presided over by Judge Joe Wapner.

Johnny should've had a body shop take out the dents, repaint the truck, and then bring it to the studio looking like new.
