For my generation, Carson-Letterman was back-to-back comedy gold on late night television, and whenever I knew Letterman was visiting The Tonight Show (20 plus times), I made a point to stay awake instead of just setting the VCR. I was lucky enough to catch Carson's appearances on Letterman's shows too. It was a different era of late-night TV.
A friend and I worked at different gas stations of the same company. We'd get off at the same time and meet at Country Sweet Chicken and Ribs. We'd take our orders back to my house and watch Letterman. Best times to remember.
I really like the warmth and friendship these two men shared. All of their appearances together are just great. The whole car thing, Johnny's appearances on Dave's show after he retired...all great.
@@andreabiagi7833 I think a lot of us almost felt like we knew Johnny personally. Watching him appear on stage was like seeing an old friend. I still feel that way when I watch these videos.
I didn't watch Carson, but tuned into David Letterman starting in 2011 and watched his show on and off until around 2014. Late night shows are all political and it gets boring after a while. Letterman was my Johnny Carson you could say. This interview between Dave and Johnny is purely funny and cool.
God I wish we had hosts nowadays like Carson and Letterman.....many of the hosts nowadays, they just aren't as funny, smooth or professional - alot of times, they seem like they are just rapd firing for laughs. These pros are such a joy to watch. I also enjoyed Arsenio and Charlie Rose
Min 4:00 onwards: Dave lost his (relative modest, compared to Johnny's) Malibu home in his divorce to his first wife. Johnny had many divorces with such settlements. This was the greatest example of these two titans knowingly amusing themselves equally as they're amusing the public. Testament to their special relationships and greatness.
it's funny. Paul Newman ended up being what Dave called "a friend of the show" when he moved to CBS. Regis was another one and also Tony Randall. Paul would just "be in the audience" or some silly thing. Good memories. Dave also ended up with the Bobby Rahal as co owner of a racing team. Rahal Letterman Ranigan aka BMW Team RLL, as it is now known. yes, I'm a Letterman fan...
Jerry Seinfeld said in the American Masters/PBS Carson documentary that when Carson left, he took The Tonight Show with him. Seinfeld has a point, and in retrospect it's why I'm glad Letterman defected to CBS (NBC had wanted to keep Letterman at 12:30 after naming Leno as host of The Tonight Show). Letterman's Late Night on NBC had already established him as a groundbreaking comic, but the 11:30 time slot on CBS allowed him to go just a bit broader and get out from under the shadow of The Tonight Show (where a bland Leno did not break any new comedic ground, as opposed to Carson, who had built on different Tonight Show templates created by Steve Allen and Jack Paar and loosely melded them together).
Not if you were in the 1989 quake in the Bay Area as I was. But then again, other than the death and destruction, it was a very interesting experience.
You can tell that Johnny and David really liked each other. I heard that Johnny really wanted David to replace him on the Tonight Show instead of Jay Leno. I always thought that David was much better than Leno.
After a long schpeel of how celebs have awful talk show stories dave came out with 2 after saying that un-ironically and Johnny didn't let him slide in good jest. "Drumroll to the death" Brilliant.
David is a genius. Also were Johnny, Ed, Don and others. Those were the days. I mean, we have Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel. They're great, but it's another ball game
Wow. Alternate opinion, here. Letterman was a genius. Very complex dude. I'm not sure he has the same success if he lands on Tonight Show. In the end, Leno fit better on that show. More gentle. If Letterman gets that gig, the Tonight Show changes to fit him and his zaniness. Carson and Leno are not zany.
FWIW, Ollie North was following his orders. Ollie North is not guilty. It's a shame they choose to chastise this man, and I greatly admire the man for the way he handled the entire situation. They need to move on and find the people who gave him the orders. Enough said. Ollie, we love you.
Johnny Carson was known to be a total asshole off the set. Dave lands some nice jabs and basically treated Johnny like Johnny treated everyone else. I think they are both having a great time and get the impression they like and respect each other.
You’re correct. A friend of mine worked security at Carson’s home in Malibu back in the early 90’s. It was understood by all working for Carson they were NOT to address or attempt to speak with him at anytime..
Dave was desperately trying to apply for this job on this one! Not sure if the past changed and Leno was booted and Dave got the show after Johnny if it would be better or worse? but things did go alright!

Agreed. The Next Phase came when it was Dave and T.S. on CBS. The two BEST hours of Late Night Television in the Mid-90's.

I liked that Dave revealed after one of his monologues shortly after Johnny passed that the monologue had consisted only of jokes written by Johnny.
@@RyanConnell5150 Yes, that was very cool!
Johnny Carson was the father of talk show hosts. He would just sit there and let funny things happen. I miss this kind of comedy 🙂❤️
He was the best. Other hosts aren't good enough to tie John's shoes. It was such a treat when I was able to stay up to watch. Miss him.
@@andreabiagi7833 I think a lot of us almost felt like we knew Johnny personally. Watching him appear on stage was like seeing an old friend. I still feel that way when I watch these videos.
Steve Allen was the Father of late night talk show
Johnny admired Dave because of how quick-witted Dave is and how they could easily play off each other. Their minds worked together like that.
Johnny and Dave were both great at rescuing jokes that didn't go over well. They made bombing fun or at least it seemed that way.
@ShadowKnight8 Cool! As Johnny would say, "I did not know that."
Had to! When you were on every night and put out so much product? It wasn't all pure gold.
I wish I could go back to this simpler time. I knew Johnny was a good talk show host but I really didn't know how good until he was gone.
Dave and Johnny, two great talk shows. Always interesting and funny
I did not know that. That is some wild, wild stuff.

I could watch this forever. Perhaps I will.
This aired 2 months before I was born. I missed a helluva good time

I think Conan O'Brien is the last of the great broadcast hosts.
Two greats in Late Night hosts. 2020 sucks for Late Night AND Day time.
2020 just sucks. All of it.
Yeah what's on late night now I don't even watch. It's no fun and it's not entertaining.

LATE NIGHT POLITICAL THEATER
NOTHING to do with FUNNY at all
Dave was really on fire this night.
Back when late night was worth staying up for.

I'll never unsee the double sided eraser pencils now that I know lol
Such fun. I miss Johnny Carson and those days. 😶🦋♥️🦋
Love the show & always 🤣 when Letterman is on!!
Thank you so much!
So Dave was kind of a clown while Johnny ran the circus and this is why they got the big bucks. Perfect.
Those were the days😎

Precious moments, I miss these guys, 😂 funny !
The two best
Wow, Johnny's suit was really flaring. This was great, Carson shows his quick mind and keen sense of comedy.
Better than today’s lot x
Carson is still the king. Even now. Letterman should have been his replacement but would have never filled his shoes.

@@bigd-1-channel514 The book is better. :)
Letterman would have been the first person to agree with you, but still better than Leno.
4:00 referring to breakup with Merrill Markoe, original head writer of Dave's NBC shows.
Two masterful joke/story tellers.
1989 was a cool year!!!

That was great! I especially loved the meta commentary about running a talk show.
I love Dave andJohnny
At the end, after Dave's Paul Newman story bombed, you can tell Johnny had real care for his protege. 🤗😜🤷
