My mother-in-law years ago taught me and if you put a little, honey sugar or syrup and your pancake mix your pancakes a better browning effect, which would taste better. Food for thought.❤❤
OK sweetheart I’ve just found your videos watch several and enjoyed each and everyone. Hats off to you that you’re doing everything possible yourselves to provide for your family a healthier life. I couldn’t help but notice that you pack your baby on your back a lot. Your baby won’t be able to develop properly without crawling pulling up and walking. His muscles won’t develop properly. If you can’t keep your trial at bay. It feel a good idea if you get a plague pan that way at least he’ll be able to play entertain yourself not the things around him besides your back and pull up and set up. I hope you don’t take offense to what I’m saying no offense intended, but I’m older and I’ll feel like what I’m saying deserves some food for thought at least. Please consider I think you find it very enjoyable and safe for you and your baby both.❤❤❤❤ty

Filming really is only a small part of our everyday life, but it gets tricky at her age with tripods and equipment that we don't want her to knock over. She gets lots of time on the floor and is super active and strong! :)
The Real Deal! Thanks! Yes to wild yeast! Very important information. Love this Pizza, English muffin, Pancake info WOW! Just in time. Noted your very cool counter top compost containers! How on earth so many viewers not give a thumbs up??
Hi Joelle! I cannot believe I found your FABULOUS video on sourdough starter. After several unsuccessful attempts at making my own sourdough starter this video was exactly what I needed to see today. So, im not giving up thanks to you!! I will be buying rye flour tomorrow and start over again. I'll definitely keep you posted. Again, thank you so much! You've truly inspired me to keep going and I know I will succeed. Have a joyful day and God bless you and your beautiful family.🙏🏻🤍
Blond Brownies! I grew up with a mom who spoiled us with those wonderful chocolate chip treats! Mom cooked and baked ... I was not interested - - well, guess what! I am FINALLY interested. First time viewer here. This video popped into my feed likely because I’ve been watching a lot of sourdough focused videos. Not one of them mentioned the rye flour as a way to get a starter going. I am definitely going to give it a try. I am not always good about keeping up with a starter and then am discouraged by the time it takes to develop a new one. I’m also very intrigued by your once a month sourdough baking plan! Anyway, thank you so much for sharing. I will be checking out your other videos as well as the recipes and books you mentioned today. AND might I add, your stove is amazing. ❤️
I've been searching for someone who uses only wheat berries to make sourdough. I have not tried it yet as I am intimidated by this process. Thank you for sharing. After seeing your video, I plan to try this in the summer once school is out and I have more time. Loving your videos! Love your gold Nutrimill Harvest. It's the same one that I have. 🙂

Absolutely love your videos and your thoughtful content!! I’m curious if you would put together a video about how to “homestead” in a city or in an apartment? Small ways for us city families to get involved in a more natural way of living ❤❤❤❤
Hi! Thanks for the suggestion. I think we’ll have to create an updated video like that. We did create this one a year or two ago about this topic to give you some places to start! th-cam.com/video/qozuaqmV_BE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=fWETDmZRItaKph0u
Thanks for the routine. This does make it sound much easier. I like the once a month approach. Is there an English muffin recipe too, somewhere? I couldn't find one.
Thank you for this simple routine video. I am hoping to start my sourdough bread journey soon and have always felt so intimidated to do so. Also, because we are a big family always feel like I have to make SO much of everything ( I am amazed 2 loaves of bread is enough for a month for your family....feeling like this routine would be good for us on a bi-weekly schedule once I get the hang of it).
You’re welcome! I completely understand the intimidation factor initially. It takes some figuring out and determining how much you need for your family and recipes you like. Definitely no one way to do it! Thanks for watching!
I've had the same success with my starter using regular all-purpose unbleached flour. I keep it in the refrigerator for months at a time before I use it again. I just stir in the hooch that's on the top and feed it and I'm back in business.
Thank you for your time to share all this deliciousness with us. You make sourdough seem so easy and I'm going to have to give this a go. Thank you again and God Bless
Hi! We did like them! For bread and pizza crusts we do a 50/50 blend of Glenn (a hard spring wheat) and einkorn. For the cookie bars I did 1 cup sourdough starter 2 cups flour 1 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 1 cup butter 3/4 cup brown sugar 3/4 cup cane sugar 1 tsp vanilla 2 eggs 1/2 cup oats 1.5 cups choc chips Cream butter and sugars, then add eggs and vanilla. Add in dry ingredients. Then add oats and choc. chips. Spread into a greased 9x13 pan. Bake at 350 for 30 ish minutes It was more of an experiment but they turned out really yummy!
Thank you for this video. My biggest concern had been waste if I go to sourdough starter. I love your Mill. I was hoping to choose a Komo or NutriMill for not just the wood exterior, but for the ceramic grind stones, but we just bought a WonderMill (which has steel and crushes versus grinds) to start milling due to lesser cost, but I hope eventually for a hand grinder from Lehman’s. It will be an investment. Thank you again for your epic explanations. Adorable children as well.💝💐 p.s. I forgot I wanted to make a comment about your Aga stove. Thank you for sharing your routine. So helpful. I really want to try the english muffins! I have a question though. How much time between the feedings when building up the starter?
For the cookie bars I did 1 cup sourdough starter 2 cups flour 1 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 1 cup butter 3/4 cup brown sugar 3/4 cup cane sugar 1 tsp vanilla 2 eggs 1/2 cup oats 1.5 cups choc chips Cream butter and sugars, then add eggs and vanilla. Thanks for sharing, very inspiring. Where did you get your wooden mill grinder, bag of rye flour and other bulk ingredients i.e. chocolate chips etc ... many thanks :)
Thank you!! We've always gotten them from Janie's mill but I'm going to try them from Azure Standard next time we need to stock up - there's a definite cost savings there.
Wow! So, I ordered the book and rye flour from Amazon. How did those chocolate chip bars turn out? Recipe? Awesome video. I have a broken ankle, so I'll have time to really read the book...
Oh no, so sorry about your ankle!! I hope you love the book! For the cookie bars I did 1 cup sourdough starter 2 cups flour 1 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 1 cup butter 3/4 cup brown sugar 3/4 cup cane sugar 1 tsp vanilla 2 eggs 1/2 cup oats 1.5 cups choc chips Cream butter and sugars, then add eggs and vanilla. Where do you recommend buying a safe Rye flour? I had ergot poisoning several years ago from a rye or wheat flour and avoid it. Thanks! I would love to try this recipe!
This is so helpful, thank you!! I’ve been wanting to start sourdough but can’t commit to a daily routine with a toddler 😅 May I ask where you find your wheat and einkorn?
We've always gotten it from Janie's Mill because they are local to us. I'm thinking about trying it from Azure standard next time though, they do have better prices.
Hi! Here's a short where I put the recipe for the blondie bars. I need to get a post up with this soon but haven't yet. th-cam.com/users/shortsSfjmtgroew4 The english muffins were Lisa's recipe from Farmhouse on Boone. www.farmhouseonboone.com/how-to-make-sourdough-english-muffins
Hi! Nope, we let it ferment for around 4-8 hours each time. So, I'll pull it out and feed it at night. The next morning I'll feed it a second time. At lunch time, I'll feed it a third time and then we are ready to use it that evening. For us it's usually about 24 hours from when we pull it out.
We typically end up using about 7 cups total, but I always like to have some extra on hand. Start with 4 in the bowl with the rest of the ingredients and mix in about a half cup at a time until you hit the right consistency. Thanks so much for watching!
Trying to find the brand name & IF there a model of your grinder... can you recommend 3 different grinder IF possible. And and... do you know WHERE can i find the grains/rye? I have zero idea about all of this... THANK YOU SO MUCH ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Lots of good questions here! I think we will do a follow up video soon answering some of them. In terms of grinding grains, check out this post. We go into some of this more in depth. fromscratchfarmstead.com/how-to-make-flour-using-a-hand-grain-mill-at-home/
When you say you feed your starter three times before using do you feed it three times all at the same time or throughout the day? Thank you for all the information! I'm looking forward to using my sourdough starter.
Good question. Throughout the day. So if we start it on Friday night, we'll feed it that night then again on Saturday morning, and a third time after lunch on Saturday. It will be ready to use by Saturday evening. Hope that makes sense! Happy baking! :)
Great video! i have a hand crank mill but now I want to get an electric one. I'm going to start freezing my bread now. What's the best way to thaw it or what do you do?
Thanks you! We freeze it in slices and just pull out the slices as needed. They thaw quickly that way and perfect for making toast or sandwiches. We've never tried freezing a whole loaf.
@@FromScratchFarmsteadI freeze whole loaves. Pull out, thaw, slice and refreeze. This allows me to bake less during hot summers. If you wrap it really well it lasts at least 3 months in freezer.
We feed it 3x over a 24 hour period. Usually start it at night and feed it. Then in the morning and mid day to make stuff the following evening after we initially started it.
Great video! We would love to start milling our own flour, but the grains seem quite expensive. Is there a good place to get them in bulk? Where do you guys get your whole grains?
Thanks! We've always bought them from Janie's mill because they are local to us but we are thinking about trying Azure standard soon because they are quite a bit less expensive there.
We followed the directions in the book The Art of Fermentation (amzn.to/4f3SHlz). That was almost a decade ago and it's still going strong. Thanks for watching!
Good question! With using freshly ground whole wheat, we've always gotten more of a dense sandwich bread. I wouldn't call us sourdough experts at all but we don't mind the more dense loaf. Thanks for watching!
@@caseylohman3309 We actually found it used locally on FB Marketplace. It was the find of a lifetime! They're way beyond our budget new, but they do pop up used from time to time.
Bonne chance
Even if you use rye flour to feed your sourdough starter, you don’t taste the rye at all in the bread or whatever you are making if you use a different flour for making it. For example, we use a 50/50 hard spring wheat and einkorn for our bread, just use the rye to feed our starter. We don’t taste the rye at all! Hope that helps!

@@FromScratchFarmstead Thank you 💕
How much fresh milled wheat would you use for the bread? Love your videos!
We typically end up using about 7 cups total, but I always like to have some extra on hand. Start with 4 in the bowl with the rest of the ingredients and mix in about a half cup at a time until you hit the right consistency. Thanks so much for watching!
What is the green cast iron dish by your stove?
It's a steamer pot. We use it to add humidity in the winter. Thanks for watching!
Tell me about your stove!
It's an AGA!! We have a few other specific AGA videos that go into more detail!!
Thanks for sharing🌺👍🌺👍🌺👍
You're welcome!!
That does make sense! Thank you:)
Brown bread with the rye?
I have to ask where did you get your overalls from?❤
These are from REI! They are thicker so perfect for winter and cooler days!
Thank you!!!
@@FromScratchFarmstead
@@FromScratchFarmsteadI freeze whole loaves. Pull out, thaw, slice and refreeze. This allows me to bake less during hot summers. If you wrap it really well it lasts at least 3 months in freezer.
What fuel does your red range use and what brand is it?
It's an AGA and it runs on gas!
When you say you feed it three times, is that once a day for three days?
We feed it 3x over a 24 hour period. Usually start it at night and feed it. Then in the morning and mid day to make stuff the following evening after we initially started it.
@@FromScratchFarmstead Thank you! Loved the info on the video!
Awesome! Thanks!
Where did you buy your headband the colorful first one in video and the others. Thanks
They are from naturallife.com!
Thank you! God bless you and your family!
Where do you get your seed for milling?
Good question! We've always gotten ours from Janie's Mill because they are local to us but Azure standard is a good option too that's less expensive.
How do you start your sourdough starter
We followed the directions in the book The Art of Fermentation (amzn.to/4f3SHlz). That was almost a decade ago and it's still going strong. Thanks for watching!
We've had a starter in the fridge for over a year ... should we revive it?
Give it a try!🙂
You can definitely try!! Use rye flour for sure!
I lik canberries in my bread.
Do you have a link to your Amazon storefront?
We don't actually have one! This has been on our list to create but hasn't happened yet!
is the crumb supposed to be that tight and gummy?
Good question! With using freshly ground whole wheat, we've always gotten more of a dense sandwich bread. I wouldn't call us sourdough experts at all but we don't mind the more dense loaf. Thanks for watching!

Awesome - So glad you are here!! I followed the directions exactly from the book The Art of Fermentation by Sandor Katz to make our sourdough starter.

Where do you get your flour?
We've always gotten our grains from Janie's Mill which is local to us. Azure standard would be a great option too and is less expensive.

So sweet 🙏🏼👍💗💙🐣 Thanks for sharing Sub’d
You're welcome! So glad you're here!
That stove tho
We love it - The center of our home :)
Where did you get the stove?!
@@caseylohman3309 We actually found it used locally on FB Marketplace. It was the find of a lifetime! They're way beyond our budget new, but they do pop up used from time to time.
Lecker😊
Thank you!! ☺️
Bonne chance
Do you rinse out and reuse your ziplocks?
Guilty! 🙄🙈
I'm getting dizzy just watching her. My goodness 4 kids to boot!
Ha! We all sleep good at night, that's for sure!
I don't care for "Rye" flavor... 😢
@@FromScratchFarmstead Good to know! Thank you!!
This just seems like too much stress to make
I get it! To each their own. There is something about the slow process that's really fun and rewarding for us!
My god u need to slow down on d talking
Ha! So much to get in :) Thanks for watching!
