Spoiler alert: I think it's right for a lot of people and full disclosure Samsung sent me their newest one for this video, but there's a good reason why I think it is probably the most beneficial one out right now as well as the one with the most benefits.

    Just a Samsung add. My Fritz!Box does ALL of this too, plus is well known for it's outstanding security. Love the mesh though.
    The main reason for me to have Mesh goes unexplained here.... while walking around the mesh smartly switches you over so your streaming/data never gets interrupted and you always have the best connection.

    The problem with repeaters is they all use the same channel, so bandwidth is effectively cut in half. They have a radio that receives a data packet, then rebroadcasts the same packet to extend the range. So while it is rebroadcasting, the base unit has to wait to send another packet, because the repeater is well, repeating. Kind of like having a conversation between the US President speaking English and the Japanese Prime Minister speaking Japanese. An interpreter translates for each leader. Each has to wait for the translation to get to the other person in order to keep the conversation going.
    Mesh Wifi uses multiple channels at once so they can be relaying the packet to other devices at the same time they are receiving them from the base unit. Maximum bandwidth stays the same. They do this with multiple radios sharing the same antenna.
    So repeaters are not as good as mesh networks.

    If you were issued a Wireless Gateway (modem and router in one unit), you need to bridge the device as only a modem and then only use the #1 Ethernet port to the first mesh WiFi point. This avoids double NAT problems.

    Please press read more and like this so it will help more people. Thank you.
    Range extenders:
    - extends the WiFi coverage area in your home/workplace
    - has a different SSID (WiFi name) than your router. what this means is that you'll have to manully switch wifi names on your mobile device when you walk around your house
    - halves the speed of the original speed you're feeding into it, capped at the maximum speed of your model
    Ethernet Powerline Adapters:
    - extends your internet through the electrical wiring in your home/workplace
    - only will work when there's more than 1.
    - whatever number of adapters that you have, they HAVE to be in the same electrical circuit of 300 meters or less
    - THEORETICALLY gives you full speed of the original speed you're feeding into it, capped at the maximum speed of your model
    - by default, it will use a different SSID from your router but there are ways to clone your router's WiFi name and password using an app
    - the older the wiring in your house, the more static/electrical interference it has, hence lowering the speed of your internet that comes out of the adapters
    - it's either a hit or miss for different people
    Mesh Router Wifi:
    - does what range extenders do, but using the same SSID throughout your home/workplace no matter how many nodes you use
    - dual band meshes (2nd node onwards) will half the speed that you are feeding into it, capped at the maximum speed of your model, unless all of them is plugged with an ethernet cable to the modem
    - tri-band meshes THEORETICALLY gives you full speed of the original speed you're feeding into it, capped at the maximum speed of your model (in practice you will get 90-ish percent of your original speed, capped at the maximum speed of your model) due to the 3rd band giving you dedicated backhaul
    - the more walls there are between one single node/mesh and your mobile device, the more dropped speeds you will experience
    - if you want full speed WiFi from your mesh (no matter dual or tri band), plug them into your modem or ONR.
    In summery range extenders and powerlines are cheaper options, but with more caveats than mesh. And mesh can be very expensive

    Mesh specifically uses one of the wifi radios, usually the 5Ghz as the backhaul, leaving only the 2.4Ghz for wifi clients. A traditional lightweight AP uses a wired network connection and therefore has both bands available for data.. If you have the means, absolutely use traditional wired lightweight APs instead.

  • @bassman87
    @bassman87 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    One feature you did miss is the wired connections. looking at the specs each device has two ethernet ports for connecting not only the router, but also other wired devices. This is great for homes that dont have structured cable running between rooms but have multiple wired only devices, such as desktops or older Smart TVs that wouldn't be able to join the network otherwise.

    • @bassman87

      @@rohobok2890 yup. For instance I have a TP-Link "WiFi extender" which creates a Mesh with my existing wireless and I have a switch plugged into its LAN port. I can then plug the multiple devices in my home office into that switch and have it connect to my home network as if those devices were on the wireless network.
      In fact I don't need the additional wireless coverage so I've turned off the wireless rebroadcasting of the SSIDs, so im basically using it as a wireless point to point solution.

    So they're just fancy Wi-Fi extenders?

    • @KaoruSugimura
      @KaoruSugimura 5 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      Well, if by fancy you mean "smart" then sure. There's also the option to do backhaul on most as well which treats them as an AP, meaning you can have them on different channels meaning less or no interference. Extenders rebroadcast on the same channel causing interference, hence the huge loss in wifi up/download speed most people get with those.
      Mesh is great for large homes but there's a reason why they advertise for specific size homes. They really do mean that you should only be getting these if you have a large house with dead spots. Otherwise just get an Access Point that wires back to the router and broadcasts on another channel.

      Chester they are not extender. With extender have different ssid which means you would have to disconnect from one extender to the next when you walk from floor to floor, a mesh has the same ssid (router name like homewifi) so you don't need to change WiFi connection as you go from floor to floor. It will automatically switch you. Extenders are garbage in my opinion because if you have a printer on an extender network you can't reach it when you are on a different extender with your laptop or phone. A mesh let's all your device work as though it is on the same network. I hope this helps.

      Tomjiujitsu Agreed. I love my mesh nettwork. The price is a bit higher then a traditional router, but I think it was worth changing from my old router. I used to buy extenders and the result was never as good as with mesh. For doubters, try it at least if you can afford the upgrade. Also bye bye deadspots on the lower floors of the house. Easiest setup ever..(it took me 5 min or so) and you have total control of all the devices, from the app you can download. Win win situation!

    Solved a lot of problems for me.
    I got the 4 unit google mesh from Costco for $300. I have a large lone home with two detached garages. And a two WiFi Sprinkler controllers controlling 24 zones. I’ve had repeater units but I’ve always had trouble servicing the garage. and the sprinkler controllers always been marginal sometimes it works sometimes not. Many times requiring the repeaters to be reset. And required constant fiddling with to make the system sprinklers marginally work. I installed the Google mesh And it to was the easiest Wi-Fi system I’ve ever set up. What makes it nice over a repeater is all access points to use the same name and password instead of a different name and password at each repeater site. So all my devices automatically go to the mesh unit that best works for them at that moment. Not only did it solve the sprinkler controller problem but gave me solid Wi-Fi in both garages And even in garden shed that I never thought I’d have Wi-Fi in
    I too thought at first the price was out of line. But considering the problems it solved for me it turned out to be cheap investment.

If you want ultimate speed you can use a wired Ethernet to connect each AP or if that's too much trouble to wire you can use a cheap $70 PowerLine Ethernet link which is still faster and cheaper than these "Mesh" products which is just a slick marketing term for Wireless repeater or WiFi backhaul.

    As a Wi-Fi professional I must say you have an interesting sales pitch. In most apartments a single well placed AP is the way to go. Mesh is most likely the worst thinkable approach as you resend all traffic in the spectrum/ time you have available an extra time per hop. Wiring your house for APs and using clustering APs will improve the user experience and not just the signal strength your wireless client will see. Each channel is a shared media, meshing just ensures your traffic to be carried in this shared media double or triple. Mesh is a waste of money indoors - pull some cable to good locations and place the APs in a location an orientation that provides the very best coverage.

I live next door to the building (landlord and owner of property) i have been told to buy this mesh system and extended my home wifi to the building next door which is about 2000sq feet away. Is mesh wifi better or should i just get a router and put a sim card in there and pay £20 for unlimited data?

      @geirleirvik1478 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@thetruth2929 10 security cameras are likely to create a lot of traffic. If they connect to a cloud service and connect via WLAN, sure 4G would work, if the signal is good. However if the cameras are 2.4GHz you could have 5GHz point to point. For the best quality you may end up paying $$$. For less than 400 yards a 60GHz system with point to point could work well. However if all possible a cable would be best.

    The one thing that concerns me about mesh systems, is that I've read a number of reviews from people who have wireless security systems and cameras such as Arlo and Blink, who have said their cameras occasionally will lose sync with the base station they have when on these mesh Networks. That's a deal-breaker, at least to me.
    I'd love to see a review on a couple of these systems after someone has had them for a while and been using items like wireless cameras on them, to see which ones retain connectivity better, Etc.

      Mesh networks like this are a useful tool for certain applications, but IMO I would try to avoid anything more than a single hop away from an ethernet-wired AP. Some of these mesh systems (I've only set up Amplifi) support ethernet backhaul, so you can (for example) get 95% of a house covered by ethernet-backhaul AP and then add a meshpoint or two to cover things like a patio or yard.

    Mesh inside the house but how about mesh outside like football field or separate garage? Will this work with the distance?

    • @AlexanderRay92
      @AlexanderRay92 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There'd be too much congestion for a wireless backhaul, and at that scale you'd run into issues with latency and reliability over many hops.
      Ubiquiti, who makes a line of consumer mesh access points (amplifi) also makes 'enterprise' mesh wifi access points that CAN cover things like a football stadium or hotel - but they all use an ethernet backhaul, with the ethernet itself also providing power. The 'mesh' there has to do with the ability of wifi-enabled devices to roam across multiple APs on a single session, but they generally share 'layer 2' or switch/ethernet-level common connectivity back to a central router.

    • @Tech-Synthetic
      @Tech-Synthetic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They actually do make exterior mesh nodes specific for that situation but ill be honest, until the mesh type network has been around for a while those are going to be pretty pricey more so than the in home versions as they need to support some sort of water resistance and additional protection for outdoors. Garage application might actually be feasible though. Distance is one of the limiting factors of small mesh nodes but in theory you could make it work for several thousand sq ft areas.

    • @AlexanderRay92
      @AlexanderRay92 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, all-wireless mesh networks at that scale (football field and such) intrinsically make little sense, though. Namely because such points generally are omni-directional and wifi is collision-prone, a large number of such devices attempting to talk to each-other - on top of all the devices talking with them - would lead to significant performance degradation. Even in the best case, there's still potentially a large number of hops back to the gateway, which would particularly impact things sensitive to latency (e.g., communications technology).
      A hybrid system may work, sure, e.g., one with a core of wire-backed APs with a few mesh points added in to cover one-off areas and the like. The bigger issue, though, is that these wireless mesh systems still require a wire: the power cable. And right now, power-over-ethernet systems are actually fairly mature and cheap, and more than capable of powering wireless access points, so for a large installation it's not as if running only power is easier or cheaper than running only ethernet. And if you can just as easily (arguably easier and cheaper because not high voltage work) run ethernet as power, and also get the benefit of greater stability, throughput, and device capacity, why would one instead go with wireless mesh?
      As far as small areas go, I think a hybrid system would work well, assuming that mesh points are no more than one hop or so removed from the core wired AP system; you may be able to get away with one more or so, assuming few other users, but it becomes exponentially worse for each hop from the get-go. It should also be mentioned that installation of ethernet cabling into housing is often unnecessary for houses since the early 2000s (in the US) since many have ethernet used either openly or as the medium for phone jacks - requiring only a simple punchdown tool/block to reterminate as ethernet. And at that point, you can either use a power injector for PoE at the end, or possibly run PoE directly through the wire (if the cable is high enough quality) and not have to worry about power, either one being vastly technically superior.

    • @Tech-Synthetic
      @Tech-Synthetic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

       Typically the omni-directional capability rarely impedes its ability to communicate as most mesh networks use a specifically configured band or in EERO's case thread communication to talk back and forth that is auto optimized for networks in the area so as to prevent this very thing of congestion of specific channels/bands. As far as simplicity goes most of the time it is easier to just plug in a device to the wall and go. If your house or where you're staying does indeed have the ability of wired that is obviously always going to be better.
      There are actually vast amounts of housing at least in a lot of the area's near me even new ones that don't always have cabling that can be used for that specific task (at least not in a simplistic way, if you're technically proficient it is definitely easier though) I know of the last 3-5 places I've stayed it was rare that we had pre-wired ethernet or phone lines that would not be affected by those around you. As far as latency it normally doesn't get affected very much (in my situation usually no more than 2-5 ms ping) if you're application is 6000-7000 sq ft or less which the average house is. Small area's however would require 0 additional hops as it is capable of communicating directly with the host node so there would be no need for daisy chaining.
      In my personally experience, I've use almost every one of the most popular mesh networks. I agree there are a few that are in fact terrible and does seem like you just connected a bad router to 1-2 other cheap extenders, but there are also ones out there where the overall experience and reliability is unmatched in speed and in latency in every corner of my home. I currently have the Velop 3 Node one of the expensive options in my house and all throughout my house (roughly 4000-4400 sq ft) I have faster speeds than what I pay for and I also typically, on tests only have a 7-9 ms ping and in game or during real world measurements have between 20-35 ms ping which is amazing considered my entire house is wireless running on 3 nodes. I also tend to have practically full bars everywhere in or even near my house all the way around.

      No, it's not the same. Mesh is way better and faster. You only need 1 log in to your wifi. repeaters need to be logged into each one you want to use. Therefore after you log into your repeater your device may not connect to it automatically. It may get stuck on your primary wifi point. then you have to go into setting and force to connect to that point. I used to have a repeater in my bedroom. My phone would connect to my router in the living room. Then when I take my phone to the bedroom the phone wouldn't connect to the bedroom repeater. I had to manually connect. With mesh, your entire house Is ONE internet.

What do I mean by 'ideal situation'? It means there's no surge protector/protection in your home circuit, provided that you plug BOTH adapters straight into the wall and not through extension sockets, and also no more than the maximum electrical wiring length that the adapter says it can go.

    I have Google Wifi, (Google's mesh system) and it disconnects all the time. It is the most frustrating thing as they are nearly impossible to re setup, without erasing the entire system and creating a new network, every, single, time.😡

      @Alex Jackson I have a big house, so I bought two extenders, when you set them up, the system will automatically ask you if you want to change the name of the extenders to match with the main router so the extender will automatically connect the nearest wifi source for you when you are moving in the house.

      A.I. Has been over used but a simple calculator is considered as A.I. (Artificial Intelligence)

      As someone who is literally completing a P.h.D in AI, I can confidently say no one in this comment thread knows what they are taking about.
      Machine learning is simply a tool of AI, so for all intents and purposes Machine Learning IS artificial intelligence. Secondly, a calculator is not AI, if I see another ridiculous comment like this I'm going to blow.

      Artificial meaning machine.
      Intelligence meaning learning.

    • @rdooski
      @rdooski 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Definition of AI is very broad, but a calculator is definitely AI. Its artificial and has intelligence "the ability to acquire and apply knowledge". And hell a computer "an electronic device for storing and processing data" is just a sophisticated calculator at the end of the day.

    • @kenbobcorn
      @kenbobcorn 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +rdooski, no it is not. What website or resource are you getting this information from? You can't just make up definitions and attempt to apply it to a narrow scope of things that make sense to you. You can't take the human definition of intelligence and just apply it to a device, that's not why things have operational and technical definitions. In software, artificial intelligence has a very specific application for algorithms which have a feedforward and feeback loop integrated into the architecture; or creates a model object and can apply it to new features.
      The fact that you have no idea how a calculator works (a simple set of logic gets with no feedback mechanism) because you only used one in high school, does not mean you can discuss complicated topics that are outside of your scope. So for the sake of anyone who is trying to learn here, please do not comment about complex topics like this one, someone might actually take you for your word.

    Can anyone help. I have an out building (wooden shed) which is only about 10 metres from my house. I can pick up my broadband in there on my phone but not on my PC. Any ideas? Seems like it's a pc issue rather than the signal side of things.

    Most People that can afford dropping $500 or more on WiFi have Ethernet around the house.
    I think the best option if you have ethernet wired throughout your home you should look at multiple wired AP's and maybe 1 or 2 Mesh for outside, maybe

      Not really. I know this is 7 months late so u probably dont care anymore but wifi extenders (the nes that have been around for ages) half the signal of the wifi to boost the strength whereas these mesh wifis repeat the signal of the wifi so u get maximum wifi speed everywhere at a higher cost obviously

  • @Get_yotted

    I guess ok for home consumers who will only need like 3, but if you’re deploying a decent sized building I think APs are a better option, they’re cheaper, the only negative is that you need to run a bunch of patches but if you have a POE switch you don’t need to run power so you can mount the APs in better locations like ceilings. I get that it’s easier to provision but the price and the fact that you can’t mount these on ceiling unless you have a outlet up there I don’t really see these being a good alternative.

    • @Mariyjaneman
      @Mariyjaneman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      eero actually makes a POE adapter for their mesh routers, and can be mounted to the ceiling. These basically act as APs when hardwired back to a POE switch.
