Phil Harris On The Greeny Burst And The Kossoff Burst

แชร์

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 27 ก.ค. 2019
  • North West Guitar Show May 18, 2014 featuring guitarist, collector, historian and writer, Phil Harris, with two of the most iconic guitars in the world - the sunburst 1959 Gibson Les Paul previously owned by Peter Green and Gary Moore AND the 1959 Les Paul owned by Paul Kossoff of legendary 60's blues/rock pioneers, Free / Back Street Crawler.
Phil Harris on the main stage playing the guitars with a band and talking about the guitars' history and details.
Sunburst 1959 Les Pauls “Bursts” without any famous player connection are extremely rare and valuable; good examples can fetch astronomical amounts of money. However, due to their connection with these major guitarists, these particular examples are almost priceless.

My mate is a guitar dealer and we attended the Kempton Guitar Show about 3 years ago may be 4 anyway Phil always came over to talk to us and on the last occasion he brought his own 59 Les Paul with him and said you can have a go if you want so I promptly went to the Lazy J amp table where he was demoing the amps and deafening everyone!
And asked could I have a go with the guitar he said sure gave it to me and I promptly took it back to our stall where we had a play with it for about 10 mins , so thanks Phil it was an experience I won’t get to have again I doubt .

Phil bought one of Paul's Standards off a mate of mine Terry Newman at the time his daughter Claire had just been born in the mid 70s . It was a dark fronted burst and I had built a little solid state practice amp for Terry . Before Paul and Terry ,l it apparently belonged to Eric Clapton . His band " PowerPack " was resident at the Bridgehouse and were moving to the Dustbin ( Ruskin ) Arms in East Ham , then the Green Man at Leytonstone . Terrys rendition of " All Right Now " was renowned like much of everything else he sang and played. In those days he learned 6 new numbers a week by ear which you had to do to keep playing 4 nights a week at the same venue. Phil went to Terry's House in Tudor Road East Ham to pick it up . I think Terry ended up with a LP Custom and a couple of hundred quid . Yes , I used to towel it down and case it after Terry's gigs like the Standard . He sold the Custom in 1979 I think when Dick was building a " DK Black Beauty " for Terry . Terry had used it to replace a cherry Gibson 335 and the dark burst came along at the right price . I think he borrowed the money off his Dad . Terry was no luthier at the time but his dad Frank was a real lovely multi skilled gentleman in every sense of the word . Terry and I worked for the same company Cape Contracts in Barking but I am 10 years his junior . It was a pretty common sight at the Bridgehouse to see all sorts of names turn up after local gigs , like Rory and Gary who I met during Colliseum 2 at NELP in Dageham . Terry had a day job and despite offers from all sorts of bands . On the Bridgehouse website there is a picture of Terry playing and singing around 1970 on his 335 , that too had some history behind it, but it was common for guitarists to sell off and try to buy back when work was short or for any other reason , and you can hear Kossies other Standard which is now in America on the Cloud . Its Terry Numan playing and singing Uriah Heeps " July Morning " . Terry is still gigging with Dave and sometimes with his son Oliver who also plays of course and has a number of guitars from Dick Kinight , early Jackson Charvels , and the collection still grows and he uses Friedman Browneyes , not Tweed Clones like Phil . Les Paul's and Marshalls are the only way to fly . A BE is a superbly built amp based around Marshall topography . He has number 5 of the other great players guitar builds , Dave Edwards , another friend from way back . If you search TH-cam for Dave Edwards and Guest you will see Terry and Dave who , dare I say it , both would have demonstrated these guitars much better than Phil and sang the numbers too , to a very high standard . Note Terry's fretting style , as he has smaller dumpier fingers than Phil . Terry is now 75 and lives in his studio home in Billericay , Essex.

Yea, I've been to the Surrey Tavern, the Oval, we knew it as the Cricketers. Iconic local pub in Kennington. Lots of great music happened there, ditto Half Moon, Father Redcap, Two Brewers, all sarf Landon. Those who were privy, know. Now to my knowledge, all gone along with the music and the priceless musicians who entertained and deeply inspired us.
On to Greeny. No question, Phil did the guitar more than justice, made me finally realise it's both the player and the tone inherent in the instrument. However. Phil's demo also proves once again just how GOOD Peter Green was, as if we never doubted that (I didn't).
Phil's certainly an amazing player, but on this demo unable to hold and find the critical notes on those blues bends that Green was a master of, the man who actually rarely if ever failed to find note perfect with genuine feel.

I LOVE that Word "RESTRAINT" when it is in reference to one's Lead Guitar playing. Choosing what NOT to play (overplaying) makes the difference between an interesting, tasty Musical Solo & one where it is more than obvious that the Player is trying to Show-Off their Chops. Speed, Dexterity & their complete "Library" of Licks (usually for the Benifit of their "Colleagues" and/or the Chicks, etc.)
For me - Koss is The MAN - whereas so many other Ones seem like scared little "Skittering" Mouses.

A question for anyone; don't all these guitars (335, Stats, Les Pauls, etc..) sound mostly the same as each other? I mean, I feel that the amp and its setting have WAY more impact on any tonal differences between these guitars than the year. So, I don't understand why people cherish an older Les Paul vs a new one.

Gibson never wound pickups backwards, its simply one of the magnets in one of the pickups is installed backwards. Both pickups are on. Very easy to do, but you have to take the cover off and if they are potted, it can be a real mess to deal with.

    I've never liked Phil Harris.
Talk about "standing on the shoulders of giants" 🙄
I knew Pete in the last year's of his life, living on Canvey Island.
We discussed this guitar, and quite honestly...he couldn't give a toss.
He was always completely bemused by the fuss.
    Any fuss.
But he was also someone who was quite vulnerable, and got taken advantage of many times, by those with lesser talents and ability.
The way that Harris hawks himself around now with Kirk Hammetts guitar is just awful.
It represents everything that Pete wasn't.
    No integrity whatsoever.
    And as for Gary Moore...
    He was the same.
Refused to even acknowledge the fact that he had bought the guitar for a pittance from Pete, when it came time to sell it for a small fortune.
    Disgraceful.
