Muneeb Ahmed idk I mean it depends on if your work is good. Also, you need to be able to market yourself. I have trouble with speaking with people in Person and am not that confident in my work, so I haven’t really gotten paid for doing this yet. I mean, I’m still in college right now for it, but a good amount of my classmates talk about work for other clients that they’re doing and I have nothing lol.
Muneeb Ahmed no sorry I don’t use any social media, that’s another thing too, like I should probably make them but I don’t like them at all. Like utilize the social media I guess to show my work.
This is what I struggle with. I really love graphic design spending 15 hours doing it without noticing at times but I'm not confident about my future in this field.
If you love it you can make that come through in your work and in your interactions with clients. if you aren't confident enough in your skill yet, at least you can be confident in your ability to learn, work hard and stay enthusiastic, which are far more important in most people's minds. Maybe try for a studio job instead of freelancing if you want to build up your skill while doing what you love and earning a living. It has the bonus of being around other like-minded creatives in person, who will hopefully support your development :)
I am only 13 but i am getting serious about making money. I can be talented and I am learning as I go on. Hopefully as I become getting more skilled people can buy my products (Logo, banner, Game art etc.) I feel you bro

There's a plethora of tips for teachers to make and sell products but I feel like graphic designers don't seem to put out as much advice. Yours is great, I appreciate it and am your newest subscriber! Thank you!

great video! Just chipping in my 3 cents, Passive income is great but unfortunately, Vietnamese (thats where I'm from) views are worth only a fraction of American views:(
Then try to pace yourself and remind yourself to keep at it until it's good enough. You can take breaks and come back later. Don't need to finish it all in one go.
You know what the problem is, it's up to you to fix it. For art, I recommend trying to distance yourself emotionally from the results and instead attach your feelings to work done - get sad when you don't try, instead of when you aren't happy with the results. That way you can identify your problems and work on fixing them, and feel good about it. Even if you're not making much progress, you can identify that and improve your methods. Hopefully you can remind yourself it's the hours that matter, and you'll get there in the end. As long as you're working hard and working mindfully. Good luck dude
I love going back to some of your old videos man. Some of this stuff I am already more than aware of but its nice to heard from others, and to pick on other things. Thanks for all you have done so far Will!
I like doing graphic design on my spare time, I am a 3D artist but never found any job or got hired before, I was mainly focused for 3D Art which I completely ignored the fact that I could more easily do normal graphic design and get paid for it, thing is I am not sure if I am qualified to do so, I truly wish that was the case, I might attempt applying for such jobs to be honest.
Have you tried freelancer.com where you can enter your work in design contests held by clients in need? I think there definitely are work available for your area. Depending on your client interaction and the actual design you may end up making some good money. Good luck :))
Passive income and "lazy" income are two different things. People think artists are "lazy" because we dont have a "conventional" job. Yet, if you ask me, id rather do business with a company that has put effort into their marketing and design than the one that hasnt. So you tell me if you think designers and artists have an impact on how many customers a company receives. Think about apple vs samsung. Apple has more control over the quality and quantity of their ads. So in the end, although samsung is more innovative, apple gets the most customers.
loved this video! great ideas and super informative! my favorite is definitely passive income (which is probably most people's favorite!) I was able to dive into passive income by creating my own digital wall art store which I'm super happy about! but definitely takes time to get to that point especially in the beginning.
I love that you mentioned that everyone has their own flare while speaking. My issue is being unique to stand out. Typography confuses me though. How do you create your own fonts when there are already so many? Maybe you end up copying someone else's font.... ???
This guy probably draws some cool looking text by hand, then vectorizes it into a font. It would be very hard for him to inadvertently make a font that a duplicate of an existing one.
Hi! do you promote all your work on Instagram and Facebook? I manage to get clients over Instagram alone. it can be a powerful tool! Also not sure if you have tried email marketing :)
Making money is my main concern about working in the industry. I just don't feel like im going to je good enough to earn a good amount of money even though I could spend all day working on designs... which i cant since im going to university for engineering almost all day.
I studied and graduated from engineering as well! but I didn't enjoy it so I took a graphic design course and now I'm a freelance graphic designer on the side. do you work as an engineer now or are you diving into graphic design?
@@SandraDi Some months after I wrote this comment I quit engineering and started studying media design and Computer science. A mix of design and coding. On the side I worked for agencies during the last 3 years and gained alot experience. Soon I will graduate and probably start my freelance design Business. I specialize in UX/UI design. I love it. Never going back. Also realized that you can earn good money in design, especially in UX Design. 😄
Will, thanks for this video. I'm liking the value that the more recent videos are bringing to the community. This is both informative and it confirms a lot of what I have heard from other creators regarding passive income. Thanks for breaking down some of the tools you use. I like that you said you don't do flyer or business card designs and you focus primarily on logo design and handlettering. You're driving home the point for me that more value can be delivered if I go narrow and focus on only the services that are core. Right now, I do primarily logo design, but I have also done business cards, flyers, book covers, booklet design amongst other things. Will, do you think it pays in the long run to narrow the focus and double down in one area of skill to master it before adding depth to the other areas?

I'm not trying to be mean or be like oh pitty me, but man I'm worried about my future lol.
Slyfy i hope you are getting work :) I’ve seen many graphic designers do this and it’s really smart but it’s to download twitter set up a graphic design account, post your portfolio or things you have made and then search graphic designer needed or I need a graphic design in the search bar on twitter and comment or contact the people who post the comment :)) and also comment on celebrities posts about your work and you being a graphic design (not other artists) and maybe someone will see your work.Hope this helps.
thank you so much you answered all my questions I love doing art but I didn't know what do first or where to start thank you show much. plz make more videos 👍👏
Depends on the type of services you are giving. If you are doing professional work for say a business or company you should have a website with contact information and your name, if you are just doing fan art than you can do either. My best advice is to get a really nice website and a portfolio with your contact information.
I really appreciate the effort you are putting in teaching us all hurdles & possibilities in Graphic Design! Great Work Brother! Greetings from The City of Pearls-Hyderabad, Telangana, India!
4:30 online classes cost more at my college than regular classes. Online classes became more popular so those who teach or the school that provide them are upping the costs.
Great and interesting video. But it was not enough. You didn't mention a list of websites where we can sign in and start working as graphic designer by creating digital works.
I'm going to play the realist here - while you are correct that each of these paths are "possible" ways to make money as a graphic designer - most people, like myself, will struggle to earn anything substantial with these paths. I'm on TH-cam, I teach on Skillshare, and have a shop on Creative Market - total monthly earnings from all of these: under $75. You need a pretty big following to actually earn enough to fill the gap when there aren't any clients. The graphic and web design markets are flooded with thousands of designers and websites that offer low cost (and some low quality) service offerings that continue to make earning a living harder and harder as each year passes - just most other creative niches there are the top 2 - 5% that earn very well with both clients and passive channels - but then there's the 95 - 98% that spend majority of their careers in a famine state rarely seeing a feast state!
Yes, but you're in the perspective of not having a following. You have to cultivate a following to earn anything from this. If you're a designer - you need to charge what you deem to be worth in your time. When you do this, and do it for a consistent period then this is when you'll make money without question. :)
You are correct regarding the following - but that's something that nobody really mentions or thinks about when it comes to Passive Income blogs or vlogs. You must have a following to earn passive income and it's not an easy thing to do, build a following I mean. It's a slow process and can take years to build. As for charging what your time is deemed to be worth - this is something that each designer needs to decide on for their themselves - I assume that you bring this up due to my comment about the top 2 - 5%. Where I used to be able to charge $125 / hour (less than a year ago) for my work - I am now down to $75 / hour or less in order to stay competitive and am finding more and more clients moving towards sites like UpWork and Fiverr - which majority of the time I can't (and partially won't) compete against due to the low cost services being offered - designing a logo for $45 or less!
I understand dude. Fiverr is something that annoys all designers I think. My advice would be to only work with clients that respect the payment and the value you bring - when you do this you attract more of those types of clients.
But if you're beginning, how do you put your designs to sell? are there websites that doesn't charge you for membership and monthly fee stuff? Is there any web which only charges you with a percentage of what you get?
Will what do you think about Latinamerican design? I am graphic designer form Nicaragua and is amazing to see how design is around the world to solve problems beyond ads and photo manipulation.

Thanks for the video! Really liked it and made me motivated again! Keep it up mate! Greetings from Germany - Munich!
+Will Paterson Hey Will. Thanks for posting this very informative video! I was wondering if I should go to University to study Graphic Design or do you think I would be better just doing online courses, or an aprentiship etc Its very hard to stray from the conventional path to university because of the inbuilt fear of unemployment.
My issue is, that I was a graphic designer for about 20 some odd years. However, I switched careers and now after 6 years out of the profession, I know I need to re-establish myself. Where does one start now with Social media etc. ???
hi! I started with social media at first (instagram and facebook) and managed to get clients from there. after I gained some confidence, I started an online Etsy shop to grow a passive income stream! have you tried these by any chance?
The creative industries are like sports. If you have the talent you can make it. The majority of people aren't good enough and need to let go. No matter how much you practice and learn all the technical skills you might just lack the creativity. Just like you could run everyday but never make the olympics.
Not true, I’m not a very creative person but I studied and learned what and how to look at things and this is how I make a living now. The design world is full of rules that once learned it can bring you a nice income. You just have to pick a software and learn it, learn the tools it holds and then apply theories. All is online: learn about Vector work, White space, Color theory, Typography and if you really want to be badass then get into animation. Trust me I’ve met a lot of guys who have no idea what a color wheel is but they make hundreds of dollars weekly by doing Flyers and icons on sites like Freelancers and such. Just take action. My 2 cents ;)
Catalin Boroi so true! especially in today's world you can become an expert for anything, it can be easy or hard, talent will also help. but if you really want to become good at something you can achieve it. okay, not everyone can be an olympic but win the the local marathon...
I think it would be the opposite, because just like sports, is not about talent but rather about practice and technique. You can be born with a lot of strength and resistance, and have the talent to go to the Olympics, but if you never practice, they won't magically find you and take you there. There are a few cases of people with actual talent that succeed, but most people just work really hard.
I’m a 14 year old graphic designer. I’m trying to get some money by selling artwork to people but it’s hard to find someone interested. What should i do to interest people?
I have learned Graphic Designing in 2019. Then I make accounts on Fiverr and Upwork. Almost two years passed, and I did not get a single order from Fiverr and Upwork. What should I do now ???
Hey Will, love the video! You are evidently very talented both on paper and in front of the camera! Just wondering why you chose MarzBar (Alex Brooks) as an example for adverts?
I love doing graphic design in my spare time usually sports fan design. Using action shots. Recently I done for a friend who own a t-shirt business. I just traded the design for a voucher for next purchase. I do not know the first thing about selling designs ,best way to distribute them or how much to sell them for. Any advice will help.
please tell me where i can sell my design ...like tshirt design logo design or any design plz suggest me wbsite where i can make money by post my designs ...
I just have failed my final exams for my A-Level. Until yesterday I wanted to repeat the whole year but I just wrote a letter to my teacher that I want to quit and do a internship in graphic design or marketing. After one year I can go and study in an University of Applied Sciences. After my bachelor degree I can go study in a normal university. Im wondering if you can work in a company as a graphic designer without being a free lancer. Im not sure if I ll be sure or secure yet right after my degrees to be a free lancer... what do I do.
The thing is you still got to put in a lot of work, just like any other field. To earn more, you often need to put yourself out there, learn new things, update your knowlodege, and many more things. The point is, it's not easy but it's possible if you put in the time and energy
Thanks for the really informitive video, I really enjoyed it! I can only suggest that the volume of the music throughout be softer as it's somewhat distracting at times. :)
Ive watched a few of you vids. I would like to make a suggesting. I do video editing and notice when you do cuts in you vids it for lack of a better word is jumpy if you put a simple dip to black at the cuts is will make you vids much smoother......great info tho
hey will thanks you the advice I just have one question, can you tell me what are some good websites to sell types, icons or any digital design ? I want to try this out I have some art that I can sell but I have no idea where to start

Ok what if we love to draw and do art but get burned out of doing art. Because we have a bad habit of trying to be done quickly and then it looks bad
Then try to pace yourself and remind yourself to keep at it until it's good enough. You can take breaks and come back later. Don't need to finish it all in one go.

hi! I started with social media at first (instagram and facebook) and managed to get clients from there. after I gained some confidence, I started an online Etsy shop to grow a passive income stream! have you tried these by any chance?
What do you think of the auto generated lego websites? The websites where you put a name in and it gives you a bunch of options?
The creative industries are like sports. If you have the talent you can make it. The majority of people aren't good enough and need to let go. No matter how much you practice and learn all the technical skills you might just lack the creativity. Just like you could run everyday but never make the olympics.
photo camera I think you explained everything in few words with great example
life is so much more than being born with talent or making it to the olympics.

Hey Will, love the video! You are evidently very talented both on paper and in front of the camera!
Just wondering why you chose MarzBar (Alex Brooks) as an example for adverts?

I just have failed my final exams for my A-Level. Until yesterday I wanted to repeat the whole year but I just wrote a letter to my teacher that I want to quit and do a internship in graphic design or marketing. After one year I can go and study in an University of Applied Sciences. After my bachelor degree I can go study in a normal university. Im wondering if you can work in a company as a graphic designer without being a free lancer. Im not sure if I ll be sure or secure yet right after my degrees to be a free lancer... what do I do.
Great watch! I guess if it were easy then we'd all be rich and famous, right? lol
The thing is you still got to put in a lot of work, just like any other field. To earn more, you often need to put yourself out there, learn new things, update your knowlodege, and many more things. The point is, it's not easy but it's possible if you put in the time and energy
Good one. Thanks.
Hey Will, great videos. Was just wondering where that "Conan" video is from and where I can see a larger versions of the logo.
Thanks
Thanks man!
Just ONE thing. whats the background music you´re using? :)
Thanks for the really informitive video, I really enjoyed it! I can only suggest that the volume of the music throughout be softer as it's somewhat distracting at times. :)
