Perfect timing! I'm a fairly young designer trying to really make my dream a reality by being able to do what I love without forever depending on employment for a source of income. I will definitely check out all your suggestions and learn how to make money online. Thanks again for your very valuable content! Keep up the great work!
+Jeremy Mura Maybe, but time is always the limiting factor. :) When I throw something on TH-cam I can kind of just do it whenever I want which is always nice.
I just started redbubble and you are able to set your profit margin as oppose to society6 . I only wish they offered shower curtains and rugs on redbubble
I was actually getting confused by this one...since we are working on a third party website, we certainly won't be aware of the technicalities...what would we the print quality if we try placing designs like isometric text, paper cut - out text etc. you know kinda designs with precision....because ultimately if we're planning to make it a brand, we certainly will be facing repercussions then.
It's a trade you're making for ease of delivering products and making some profit against having full control. If you're trying to make a large, professional brand, then the options listed here are likely not for you. If you're looking to create some designs and potentially make a few hundred (or even thousand) a month, that is possible with what I showed! :)
Very useful video. Big Thanks! Im working on releasing some web design ui kits myself so i really appreciated the depth of info you offered. If you dont mind my asking can you give me a rough ballpark of how much money you make on an average each month... dont need exact numbers just a range to help me understand revenues made when you first started off x years ago vs how they have scaled today. Thanks for the video!
I really want to work online as a designer/artist. Question, beyond designing, marketing and interactions, what else do I have to do? For example, how do I go about designing and offering a phone case, is it merely the mock up design that is sold? Are there any free websites or at least upfront?
Thanks Matt! This is great. How does one as a designer monitor each sale of ones work? How do we know as illustrator/designers that you not getting possibly "robbed" by companies hiding sales of your work from you? Just a question. Looking forward to hearing back from you. With thanks.
The reality is you cannot monitor all of that. You have to trust those companies to do the right thing. That being said, any major company that has millions in sales doesn't have a lot of incentive to run such deceptive practices, as if and when they're caught, they'll lose everything they've built up. I would recommend doing business exclusively with companies in countries that have major laws around such behavior, or individuals that you implicitly trust to do the right thing. The general rule of if it's too good to be true, it probably is, tends to be something that I think people should follow.
i wonder for popular celebrities or youtubers, if these stores make a special deal with them where they take a smaller cut because they know those products have potential to sell well.
On a place like Creative Market that isn't the case, but I can't speak to all of the different online markets out there. Certainly having a large audience behind you can give you some negotiating power if the business that wants to work with you is interested in that.
You don't have to, people typically just sell the Photoshop or Illustrator files. Some convert to JPEG or PNG to make it easy for people without the programs.
I work for Creative Market, so I'm biased to say there. But if you just need a service to sell your files from a link in your description for example, somewhere like Sellfy or similar will give you a higher percentage.
Really helpful, just a quick question do you lose the rights to your stuff when you post it on the sites or can you for instance post the same product on society6 and redbubble
I promote it actively through my social media channels, and mindful around the SEO aspects of the post I create, and try to be active and supportive to other creators on the platforms I sell on. That last aspect is very important but often ignored by many.
Sort of depends. For something like design assets I like to keep the amount of shops I offer them on limited so there isn't a lot of competition with myself for SEO purposes. If an identical item is posted with the same title and description on many many websites it can potentially hurt your Google rankings. For something like a t-shirt or cell phone case design I think it hurts less to post on multiple services, especially if those markets have a built in community and actively market your products. Those final two things are a big thing to consider. Also keep in mind that a lot of online marketplaces will promise you a lot of promotion and then actually do very, very little (if anything). Good luck!
I personally have not, but I have talked to people who have. My understanding is that you can make good money there, but it is also VERY competitive. It's all about releasing an incredible quantity of designs to gain traction and sales.

+Matt Borchert Great video Matt! Have you considered doing an online course as another source of passive income?
+Don't hate me, i'm a UNICORN of course, thanks for watching!
+Jeremy Mura Maybe, but time is always the limiting factor. :) When I throw something on TH-cam I can kind of just do it whenever I want which is always nice.
+Matt Borchert Yeh true man, does take a fair bit of hours to build it haha. Definitely challenging if you're balancing freelance or full-time work.
I just started redbubble and you are able to set your profit margin as oppose to society6 . I only wish they offered shower curtains and rugs on redbubble

Matt Borchert I just realised I said it was nice twice, silly me.
I can buy these and use them on my store items right?
No, Creative Market does not check files, there is no waiting to be checked after you upload as on envato market

Thanks, appreciate the demographic info. Curious to know what you think of Zazzle? In particular the customization options. Thanks!

Thanks Matt! A close friend of mine raised that point so I just thought to ask. Your answer is direct and honest. Appreciate it.

Am I suppose to covert my ArT into vector files ! before putting my art in these websites?
You don't have to, people typically just sell the Photoshop or Illustrator files. Some convert to JPEG or PNG to make it easy for people without the programs.
Matt Borchert hi . I have a lot of art and I mostly just take the picture from my iphone8 will this work?
Nice topic! I'm trying to make my living online.
am i able to put this onto a free wix website?
Thanks alot for this video
Thank you, Matt! Thank was very very helpful, as always! Another spot that comes to mind is Zazzle. Do you know that one?
+Milena Brandão Yep! I've just personally preferred the experience on competitors like Society6, but they're definitely one to consider as well.
Thanks you! This video help me a lot......
thanks dear!! very helpful
F***, ay keep it up mate. This video really helps. Subbed.
+Natestahhh watched more videos. These videos*
+Natestahhh Thanks!
I'm looking for a place to sell my PSDs from my tutorials which site would you say is the best ?
I work for Creative Market, so I'm biased to say there. But if you just need a service to sell your files from a link in your description for example, somewhere like Sellfy or similar will give you a higher percentage.
You can sell digital files on Deviantart but you get points, not money soooo, it's not great.
Hi, is this exclusive for US sellers only or can other countries participate in selling on these websites?
I believe that most of them (if not all) are worldwide.
What if no one buy your stuff? What do you do then?
Your nonretarded pace of narration resonates with proper usage of my time.
Really helpful, just a quick question do you lose the rights to your stuff when you post it on the sites or can you for instance post the same product on society6 and redbubble
+coldowner All the sites I listed out allow you to retain all of the rights to your work and can post it wherever you want.
+Matt Borchert k thanks a lot
So helpful!
How do you get sales though? Do you market it around Facebook?
I'm actually very new to this, not very good at marketing :(
I promote it actively through my social media channels, and mindful around the SEO aspects of the post I create, and try to be active and supportive to other creators on the platforms I sell on. That last aspect is very important but often ignored by many.
Thank you so much for replying!
You're awesome.
I don't know how make my products relevant at creative market
What about Printful ?
+fab821027 I've actually never tried them so I don't have a solid opinion, but they look pretty cool from what I can see.
wow man.. thank you
+ii Darkside No problem, glad you found it helpful.
do you think its a good idea to have a shop on more than one service ?
Sort of depends. For something like design assets I like to keep the amount of shops I offer them on limited so there isn't a lot of competition with myself for SEO purposes. i see, right now i have an redbubble, but i discovered that zazzle is more accessible for people on my country.
Yeah I think that's fine. You have to do what's in the best interest of your customers. :)
thanks a lot :)

I am not a fan of spec work and I will likely make a video on websites like 99 designs sometime in the near future.
good to know

Did you ever tried to work on Merch by Amazon Matt ?
I personally have not, but I have talked to people who have. My understanding is that you can make good money there, but it is also VERY competitive. It's all about releasing an incredible quantity of designs to gain traction and sales.
I design Cars and planes
Thank u

Not really "secrets" but ok.
