What I absolutely ADORE about this song, specifically this part, is that Max starts the “repeat after me” segment saying, “Who will pray for me?” And while that can be seen as him telling Richie, “Who’s gonna pray for you, nerd?” I view it as him almost begging the universe. Begging for someone, anyone to remember him and hope his afterlife is ok. Eventually he switches the tone to that dominating energy and it *does* become him saying “who will pray for you” but less out of bullying and more out of fury. As if he’s saying, “you turned me into a monster, this is your fault. And if people don’t pray for *me*, who on earth would pray for *you*” It’s important to remember that Max does have a god complex and is a shitty person, but still. The anger is deserved. Eventually it culminates in Richie saying, “I’m not a loser!” Which drives Max into a fury. To me, Max’s tone screams, “You killed me, bound my soul, defiled my body, and you think I’m going to kill you because you’re a loser?” I do think that he eventually believes that thought process as it progresses, but for this first and most violent kill, that last thing on his mind is that it was a bunch of losers that did him in.
I completely agree, because at this point in the play it isn't a whos good and whoa bad thing, like you said while max was a pretty terrible person the "nerds" still killed him and pretty much cursed him into not being given the fair right of afterlife judgement and not only that but instead of taking accountability for what they've done they instead separate and defile his corpse and didn't even give him a grave. And one More thing after they attempt to "scare" max he thought it was fun and even said "I was wrong about you guys" and "this is the nicest thing anyone's ever done for me" meaning he was evolving as a character and a bit as a person before getting killed which ended in him cursing them since technically it was they're fault
I think this is a compelling interpretation, especially because the scene ends with Max agreeing "You're not a loser... but you have lost everything." It's both Max losing everything despite being the monster that rules the school, and Richie who killed him (accidentally) to gain everything he wanted, but losing it now as a consequence of doing a murder.
Absolutely so fucking sick, I really wish there were more songs like this throughout the rest of the musical- they nail being serious when they want to
I love the small detail of the ghosts in the bleachers appearing behind him as if all the people that loved and adored him were never really his friends, and never really there for him. More like seeing him in a light that faded after he died, and was only shone temporarily. Showing how nobody will pray or remember him. I also love how Richie looked behind him and saw his friends singing along, and he started crying, because he realised that he was going to die and it was because of what him and his friends did, even if it was an accident. And how he took his last moments alive to finally stand up for himself. When he's backing away sitting down, and he looks behind him and then looks down you can see in his eyes that he knows he's going to die.
TBH, before I watched it, I interpreted it as him being the last victim in the play as everyone who died already pushes him to make a last stand. I am glad they didn’t go down that route, just because I like the lighter tone.

They have several others as well, unrelated to this Trilogy. They are all free on their TH-cam. @2011GETUP
I love the animation, adore the way Max deforms as it progresses and how the shots, colours and composition perfectly encapsulate the feeling of each line. This is fucking amazing
I wish we had more awesome horror villains like that, like a high school rich bitch who gets accidentally killed, but returns as a vengeful slasher ghost who morphs depending on her mood.
The way his expression seamlessly shifts, from false, mocking pity, to sadistic glee, to scornful anger, to agonized desperation and maybe even a little genuine pity all while his face is LITERALLY COMING APART is absolutley incredible.
Can I also state I love how you still add chunks of the original staging and choreography and then add the over expressiveness and freaky paranormal with the animation that could never be done in a traditional theater setting
I love that you included the background singing too, it makes it feel like spirits of past students or different universes converging to welcome his death 🙌
I fell like this is more representative of the life he has now. With Max gone, he is accepted, he is no longer a loser. The shades is the school, his new life, seemingly at his back. In any other situation...it would be enough...
Ohhhhh my god, getting in Richie's face supernaturally fast and then WHAM the black with just the white eyes, that is so cool and so spooky, that gave me goosebumps

God this is so good. The changes to the audio of the live recording to include the wind sound effects and the additional reverb and breathing at the end. The presence of Richie’s friends singing the line from “Cooler than I think I am”(I know they walk on stage in the live show as well but there is more in the chorus than just them) The ghost audience that shows up. How much of a disturbing and hulking presence Jagerman has with all his ghost powers. The final shot in the gym with Max just hanging over Richie. The camera movement shots (like when Richie stands up). I fully believe if they could, they would have done some similar effects on stage. This really takes the stage show and elevates it. Can’t wait to see it all finalized!
God the way you have Max warp and deform really hits how he must have really looked as the show went on. Just a twisted demented version of a bully. Plus that one frame with all the jagged teeth is so scary!! I love it
@@ianknapp3502 same, though in fairness I saw these animations before hearing the actual song so I definitely have bias, but yeah when I heard the actual it was no where as grand as the "who will pray for me" section (Im not saying it's bad but it's like listening to "guy like gaston" and then it suddenly shifting to "hellfire", there's just a clear shift in epicness) and again the animation didn't help because i thought this song/scene was the grand finale/final confrontation between the lead & villain but turns out this is the beginning of the real conflict
I watched the full musical because of this animation and while I did enjoy it I can't say I wasn't disappointed that it didn't have this kind of energy in it. Would love to see a dark animated musical like this one day
This animation is so fucking killer. The fact that in the beginning Max was willing to appear to Richie as his old self, kinda just making him assume “Oh god I’m about to get my ass kicked by my bullies ghost” for Max to absolutely go ham and deform himself just to prove the point of “I’m far worse than I was before, look what you’ve turned me into.” It’s taking “I’m a literal Monster” to a whole new level and it’s a level I am absolutely here for.
If I was rich I'd pay out of pocket to see the entire musical in this style. I love Max's continual rot and derangement. I love how Richie screws him self up to shout "I'm not a loser" and how his eyes bug out when he does. Cleary desperately trying to change his fate, full of fear and at least a small amount of defiance! I love how when Max releases his uh, aura, the bleachers are filled with ghostly figures and how everything disappears when Richie shouts back. And how Max snaps his attention directly back onto Richie. I love how absolutely menacing Max is at the end, towering over Richie. Almost no human resemblance left. A literal monster. I love how it seems like even Max is coming to terms with what he is now during the 'pray for me' parts. And how he seems to dive into it and fully accept it. Also, it was this animatic that both alerted me to, and made me watch the musical. 11/10.
holy fucking hell, this is the most fluid and beautiful animation i've ever seen. i have listened to this song dozens of times and this animation gave me actual chills. the way Ritchie stands up for himself!!!!! the dark shadow of Max! ahhhh!
Max in this animation kind of reminds me of the other mother in Coraline. How she started off still "normal" but unsettling but then quickly and violently and spectacularly assuming a grotesque form. Excellent work. I've probably watched it 20 times or more.
I have absolutely no idea what’s happening here but i fucking love the way the jock looking guy moves especially the face 11/10 Edit: just sat down and watched through the whole thing and it was certainly a experience
love this song as warning that richie just isnt getting. also, the grotesque max is such a wonderful touch, playing with his design and pushing it as far as it can go is so awesome! the part where he pulled off his own jaw was so cool, just pushing the idea of a horrible after-death on richie, how this is torture he will know soon
My favorite part of the animatic! This legit looks like the collaborative brain child of every horror movie and show creator and film and show maker on the planet! And it’s gloriously spectacular!
I'm getting soooo many different vibes from this animation - I'm reminded of the Iron Giant, Paranorman (as mentioned in earlier comments), and a smattering of Tim Burton. Absolutely phenomenal character work and animation, especially the swirling camera around Max. The animation of ripping apart his jaws and having him continue singing and also looming over Richie is especially ghoulish - absolutely delightful!
Like what was echoed numerous times throughout these comments already, this animation so far is absolutely phenomenal (especially as a work-in-progress!). Everything from character design to acting to syncing (to a LIVE PERFORMANCE no less!) are all brilliant in their own right. What truly makes this special is that you not only MATCHED the tone of the performance down to the dot, but ENHANCED the already stunning work of Starkid's actors. The jock tearing at his rotting flesh to reveal his skeletal remains underneath while he sings in a whirling hellfire storm speaks leagues as to what he may have glimpsed in his brief time in his afterlife post burial in the cursed house, something that is only HINTED at in the lyrics ("Or is THIS the eternal dark without a dawn?") that you picked up on and amped up in a GLORIOUS way. All that word salad to say, me like, me subscribe, me impatiently await the completed work.
Watching your updates on this animation motivated me to watch Nerdy Prudes Must Die, and god DAMN it was a good watch! Thank you for your art, I never would have found it otherwise!
I remember seeing this on tiktok about a week ago, and it made me actually sit up and watch. It had moved me and reminded me why I LOVE animation so much and why I draw. It's not even fully done yet, and it made me watch the whole musical in one night 😭
HOLY CRAP!!! Im obsessed with this!! I cannot wait to see the next update!! Your animation is so fluid and the character designs are phenomenal!! The way you added in the ghostly singers gives me chills, the way the room erupts in a whirlwind of red and death make my jaw drop and the way Max looms over Richie at the end is so icy and damning of Max’s fate. Its so good!!! Chef kisses to you! Perfection!! But also!! Thank you for introducing me to Nerdy Prudes Must Die!! I had heard a couple of Starkid productions musicals before now, but now im obsessed with Hatchet Town and need to watch the rest of the connected musicals. I love Richie joins the ensemble when they say that "I'M NOT A LOSER" especially when u get what theyre saying. All together it says "If I can finally be cool, Ill know Im not a loser" I feel like not many people talk about that
Omg I cannot stop watching this! Your animation showed up on my timeline on twitter yesterday and it made me seek out the musical. The animation is gorgeous! Max’s expressions and turnaround, the camera movement, Richie standing up to Max - mwah! Chef’s kiss! Also comparing the live and the studio versions of this song, I’m so glad you’re using the live version. “Who will pray for me?” has more weight to it because it reads as hopeless and pairs well with the following line “darkness without a dawn.” I think you really capture that hopelessness and desperation Max has when his smile drops and he stares down Richie before ripping off his own face.
Dude, Max disfiguring himself is so badass. I can’t stop watching this. This is my absolute favorite animatic specifically because of this version of Max.
THIS IS AMAZING!! It's two of my favourite things combined: IMPRESSIVE animation and a StarKid musical! Honestly, PLEASE do more NPMD stuff (like the summoning scene!!) but more importantly keep up the good work, this is so so SO impressive!!
God I love this one so much. I love how in the musical it’s specified he’s not doing this out of any sense of revenge, but just because they started thinking they were anything else than what he deemed them to be: Losers. And that explosion of anger when “I’m not a loser!” Is said totally reflects that.
Theres so much incredible animation and attention to detail! One that weirdly sticks out to me is Richies two front teeth being longer than the rest and his braces
I love the gradual progression of Max looking less and less human. First his eyes roll into the back of his skull, then rips his own face off and in the last few shots he's this inhuman, hulking beast that feels like a living shadow. Genuently can't wait to see the final release, this is beautiful.
This is actually so unbelievable!!! like i cannot even track all the amazing details, and ive rewatched this so many times, like???!!!! hope you get literally all of the funding and support to do this how you imagined, and that SK gets to see your amazing work!

AAA THIS IS SO COOOL!!! I REALLY want to get into/better at animations/animatics. What program do you use, computer program or app or what? Also, do you have any advice for learning besides bouncing balls and such? I can do those things but I lose steam quickly with more complicated stuff and it ends up not looking like how I’d hoped
I use storyboard pro! As for getting started, check out Noble Frugal Studios here on youtube, he's got GREAT videos about animation basics beyond the bouncing ball!
Edit: having gone and watched the whole play I now want very few things more than I want to see the lords in black in your artstyle. After the first one of these i went and found the song, and my god is this exactly what i imagined Espwcially all the other ghosts dissapearing there at the end
Never heard of this musical before, but spent the last hour researching everything i can about it. I find it so interesting that Richie in the original clip is cowering, begging for his life essentially, where as here, Richie stands defiantly and belts the leitmotif. I love that choice+
I am so excited to see this full animation, you have no idea! This really shows the dark side of NPMD and I am loving it! (Im going to be thinking of all of the implications lol) The ghost Chorus is the best thing in the world omg Edit: If you ever plan on doing another NPMD animation, I would love to see Dirty Dudes must die
You can tell what sort of typical animation shortcut bothers the artist. The tongue my girl. The tongue. I see you M. Plus the audio mixing is incredibly well done, combining the live with the studio is absolutely the right move.
Nah because everything about this is beautiful and gives me goosebumps. While I'm sure half the credit goes to the actors, the power of the vocals, the other half is very much this absolutely gorgeous animation. I just love it.

As much as i love the description I literally keep getting lost in the lyrics and the amazing animation does not help with my focus
So does max get it in the end?
As far as I care he can stay damned
@@dinobiatch2322 they literally had the chance to change him but everything went downhill.
Absolutely so fucking sick, I really wish there were more songs like this throughout the rest of the musical- they nail being serious when they want to
what musical is this??
@@EXTENDED_PIPE_MURDER I believe it’s called Nerdy Prudes Must Die by starkid. This audio is from the song of the same name
@@Nightfury8583 yeah i went and watched the whole thing like 20 seconds later 🤠
@@EXTENDED_PIPE_MURDER Same! It was amazeballs!
This part was the peak of it though imo
I like how you managed to incorporate the actual choreography Will Banner does in the show on the “When your body’s gone” line
THE GHOST CHORUS APPEARING IN THE BLEACHERS IM GONNA START CRYING
yeah um so within the first three seconds this made me physically sit up up, audibly gasp, and mouth AGAPE in absolute SHOCK AND WONDER THIS IS THE BEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN????!!! What did we do to deserve this absolute masterpiece????
Did your jaw drop further than his did?
WHAT IS THIS FROM?!? And where can I see it?!?!
@@swordsmanthegamernine7973 nerdy proods must die is a musical that was uploaded to TH-cam in its entirety and also all of the songs from it were also individually released on TH-cam. This is a clip from the song “nerdy proods must die” not to be confused with the musical that it is a part of Also called nerdy proods must die
Damn
@@swordsmanthegamernine7973 It's from a musical called 'Nerdy Prudes Must Die' and there's a recording of one of the performances up here on youtube! The rest of it is pretty camp, honestly, but still really good.
The way the characters are shaped reminds me of paranorman, this is exactly what i imagine the artstyle would look like if they had drawn paranorman instead of using stop-motion.
YOURE SO RIGHT MAN I love paranorman
This is fantastic. Max is truly terrifying, and you captured Richies final desperate attempt to channel his defiance into some sort of anime protagonist moment to save himself.
this is the first time I have came across "Nerdy Prudes Must Die" and... how have I not herd of this before??
Updates for this animation made me watch it and I was not disappointed :D
@@cosmodoge6565 me too and now I love it sm
It's really new still so that's probably why
Is that the name of the series/videos
Its a musical production from Team Starkid. This one in particular is from the 3rd part of their Hatchetville Trilogy, the first being 'The Guy Who Didnt Like Musicals' and the second being 'Black Friday'.
That "what did you say" is spectacular
I absolutely love the animation style and the moment when richie stands up for himself, full knowing he's about to die, just to say "I'm not a loser" left me speechless 😢
i just came across this randomly on my tiktok fyp and thank the algo gods because first off, it's incredible, can't wait for the full cut.. and second, i went and watched all of NPMD which i'd never heard of before just on the strength of this ONE lyrical hook and i gotta tell ya.. I was NOT disappointed. that was surprisingly good!! the end gave me chills!
you've got yourself a new sub (on both platforms)
I watched all three of the trillogy instead of sleeping. was it smart? No. Do I know the next lore I’m gonna be deep diving into? Yes.

fun fact, your last progress video on this animation caused me to watch NPMD and now i’m obsessed
Same here!
Same bro, same
Same here! Afterwards I watched the other Hatchetfield plays 😭 I didn't realize they're the same production that made Twisted!
What does NPMD stand for?
Same
I cant stop rewatching this. Bro your style gives me vibes of late 90's/2000 american animation, I LOVE IT!❤
I'm getting really specific Iron Giant vibes
This animation made me watch the whole play. Thanks for the new obsession!
This is so so amazing!! The motion!! Richie's expressions!! Max ripping the skin off his jaw and still singing!! The way he LOOMS at the end!! Thank you for sharing this I've been watching it all day
I cannot believe this was done by a mere mortal, BUT THANKS GOD PEOPLE LIKE YOU EXIST. This is blowing my mind with details, this animation is perfection
I like how Max's zombie hair is limp and shaggy where his regular appearance is perfectly coiffed !!
I love it
I'm kind of upset the majority of the song isn't as awesome as this part. Your animation definitely got me interested in the musical, though!
I kinda agree?? Reminds me so much of Heathers if it had supernatural elements and I just want more
I think the rest of the song grows on you the more you listen but this bit is definitely special. Max's actor killed it though
@@ianknapp3502 same, though in fairness I saw these animations before hearing the actual song so I definitely have bias, but yeah when I heard the actual it was no where as grand as the "who will pray for me" section (Im not saying it's bad but it's like listening to "guy like gaston" and then it suddenly shifting to "hellfire", there's just a clear shift in epicness)
and again the animation didn't help because i thought this song/scene was the grand finale/final confrontation between the lead & villain but turns out this is the beginning of the real conflict
holy fucking hell, this is the most fluid and beautiful animation i've ever seen. i have listened to this song dozens of times and this animation gave me actual chills. the way Ritchie stands up for himself!!!!! the dark shadow of Max! ahhhh!
The prospective circling is so perfect.
Max in this animation kind of reminds me of the other mother in Coraline. How she started off still "normal" but unsettling but then quickly and violently and spectacularly assuming a grotesque form.
Excellent work. I've probably watched it 20 times or more.
I can’t stop watching this. I know nothing about starkid but this animation has me glued to the floor watching it over and over
I have absolutely no idea what’s happening here but i fucking love the way the jock looking guy moves especially the face 11/10
Edit: just sat down and watched through the whole thing and it was certainly a experience
Oh shit! Oh fuck! I didn’t think he’d turn into a skele’un! I’m so fucking scared of skele’uns!
Most underrated comment.
I am just loving that last impact frame before the color and music cuts out showing Max as the monster he became
love this song as warning that richie just isnt getting. also, the grotesque max is such a wonderful touch, playing with his design and pushing it as far as it can go is so awesome! the part where he pulled off his own jaw was so cool, just pushing the idea of a horrible after-death on richie, how this is torture he will know soon
This is WITHOUT A DOUBT the COOLEST fan animation I’ve ever seen
And I’ve seen a LOT 😭🙏
I’m so hyped for the finished project
My favorite part of the animatic!
This legit looks like the collaborative brain child of every horror movie and show creator and film and show maker on the planet!
And it’s gloriously spectacular!
With this animation, you single handedly made me watch the musical nerdy prudes must die. It was so good. Thank you.
My jaw is on the floor!!!! the expressions! the spooky crowd! The spinning! Max ripping his own face off! So many cool details
I remember seeing this on tiktok about a week ago, and it made me actually sit up and watch. It had moved me and reminded me why I LOVE animation so much and why I draw. It's not even fully done yet, and it made me watch the whole musical in one night 😭
Always raising the bar, always delivering, just incredible work.
Look forward to seeing the final product.
Holy shit??? Like holy shit my dude. This is incredible!
You have got me hooked and im very happy about it!!!
Dude i need the whole show animated like this. The style is fricken PERFECT and the composition 👌 just subscribed
I wanna learn how to animate now.
You don't know how relatable this is
The style of your animations are insane. The little details just blow me away!
Holy Christ this is amazing, I love how truly horrific and inhuman he gradually becomes
I love Richie joins the ensemble when they say that "I'M NOT A LOSER" especially when u get what theyre saying. All together it says "If I can finally be cool, Ill know Im not a loser" I feel like not many people talk about that
Ok THAT is disconcerting as hell! 😳 super spooky and beautiful and I am so friggin excited for more of it
Omg I cannot stop watching this!
Where is this from if you could pass that along.

After the first progress animation you posted I went and watched the whole NPMD musical (and loved it!). Beyond excited to see how this turns out
Can't stop watching it! It's so well done aaaa, those poses, that frame idea I love it! Good luck with your continuing creation!
God I love this one so much. I love how in the musical it’s specified he’s not doing this out of any sense of revenge, but just because they started thinking they were anything else than what he deemed them to be: Losers. And that explosion of anger when “I’m not a loser!” Is said totally reflects that.
This is the hardest animation I’ve seen in weeks, awesome job. Really matches how all out the actors went in this scene
YEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS THIS IS THE EXACT EMOTION AND LOOK I NEEDED FOR THIS SONG! WELL DONE!!
BROOOO! omg it gets so scary and grotesque, I'm obsessed with these updates 😮❤
I like the transition from the audio from the live performance to the recorded version as things get more chaotic
Holy shit those notes are absolutely insane and the animation perfectly encapsulates the singer's intensity and energy like dang
You always pick the best moments to bring to life
Theres so much incredible animation and attention to detail!
WOW the way you animated him spinning around and tearing off his face. Just brilliant work
The poses are INSANE! The style really reminds me of Robert Valley's character design, big Motorcity vibes!👍👍
This is actually so unbelievable!!! like i cannot even track all the amazing details, and ive rewatched this so many times, like???!!!!
hope you get literally all of the funding and support to do this how you imagined, and that SK gets to see your amazing work!
THIS. IS. EVERYTHING.
the bones, the backup singers, the moving camera, the wind and echo, the glowing eyes, he backup singers smiling~
Chills. So much chills.
Chills and tears. This is beautiful.
Progress is looking fantastic mate, love how fluid everything feels
I have been rewatching these sneaks peaks everyday just enjoying it scratch my brain
I watched the play because of this clip. I loved this and the play! Cant wait to see it completed!
Crazy how this guy has Disney villain energy.
After the first one of these i went and found the song, and my god is this exactly what i imagined
Espwcially all the other ghosts dissapearing there at the end
The fact that you have him doing the same choreography for "When my bodies gone" cracks me up and horrifies me lol
(Im going to be thinking of all of the implications lol) The ghost Chorus is the best thing in the world omg
Edit: If you ever plan on doing another NPMD animation, I would love to see Dirty Dudes must die
This is the animation that got me to immediately go to Starkid to finally watch NPMD
This slaps so hard. The animation is amazing
It looks so sick, and it’s sounds just as good. You should definitely add more of the background students singing. It makes it much more impactful
You can tell what sort of typical animation shortcut bothers the artist. The tongue my girl. The tongue. I see you M.
Plus the audio mixing is incredibly well done, combining the live with the studio is absolutely the right move.
Where am I? I was in my room now I'm on the field.....Aaaaaaa....the animatic had to blow me away 😂
Good job as always...I missed your works❤
Nah because everything about this is beautiful and gives me goosebumps. While I'm sure half the credit goes to the actors, the power of the vocals, the other half is very much this absolutely gorgeous animation. I just love it.

You are insanely underrated!!!
Your animation is what got me into NPMD ☺👍 This is incredibly amazing 🔥🔥🔥🔥
This was the the first time I'd seen or heard of the musical and honestly? This is by far my favourite interpretation of Max and Richie and the video that I keep finding myself coming back to over and over again, I wish there was more of this tone throughout the rest of the list
